Due to the fact that several bored coworkers (including myself), surfed the
net, did some chatting, checked email, or checked ebay, the administration,
in their INFINITE wisdom, have decided that anyone who uses the internet
for "anything other than healthcare purposes" will be suspended or
terminated.
So, I sat there, work completed, watching the mildew collect, as we are no
longer allowed any rights, including having drinks near the nurses'
station...before long, I'm sure they won't even let me read or write
anything non-healthcare-related at the desk. Hell, pretty soon we'll
probably have to go to the breakroom just to order food, much less eat
it...not that I'm allowed to leave the desk anymore unless I have someone
practically sign in blood that they are going to cover the phone while I am
away...
And I came to one, previously undiscovered conclusion: this job is so
fucking BORING.
So, I will follow the other really good employees...and get the hell out of
Dodge...
I have a BA in English, no ties besides family and my cats, and a strong
urge to get away from this cesspool. I'm open to suggestions. What would
you do in my place?

Feral, "census" at the hospital is the number of patients we have in the
"house"--the hospital.

I use the computers all the time at school. They just have most things
blocked so that no one can get onto them anymore... But they have not
banned shmeng yet... I think it is because not enough people come here who
go to my school.. In fact, I think, quite possibly I'm the only one. ____________________ When the world is over, will we wonder how it began? |

Down in what sense, Momo? *waggles eyebrows*
Anyway, the vibe at work was actually good yesterday. Maybe it was because
the census was low...or it might have been teh docs that were on for
Thanksgiving....my doc was one of them, and he's as onery as they
come...*grin*...that, and, of course, the administrators were all at home
or at hockey...
I miss the fun times...

Feral. you had a valid complaint, and I did need to clarify. *grin*
Well, at least wastewater doesn't give a dam (heh) if you answer the phone,
take a break, or do something constructive when it's moving slow.

(since it won't let me edit, I'm just tacking this on)
Before all of this started happeneing, this was a pretty cool place to
work...then came the new rules, new prohibitions, and even more
changes...
The entire vibe of the place has changed. Where we used to work well
together, laugh together, and have really cool nights no matter how shitty
the situation became, we're at each others' throats 24/7. No one can trust
anyone else. When one comes to the floor, the new hostility is
tangible...
And that, my dears, is the probably the main reason I want to leave. When
I get a gut feeling that something is seriously out of whack, I'm usually
right on the money. All the signs tell me it's time to go anyway. I'm
ready.

Well, due to certain rules about my job, there are certain rules I can't
discuss...
Like I said, it's a lot of shit hitting the fan at once...allow me to
clarify:
1. The hours suck. Even though I work evenings, I'm expected to pull
dayshift on weekends...and I'm lucky if I get a friday night off before I
work a Saturday morning. They ignore that little labor rule about the 8
hour gap sometimes.
2. the work environment is hostile. When I feel as though I'm walking on
eggshells, it's time to go.
3. We have to jump through so many hoops to even take
a break...and some people think I don't need a break because my job is
mostly done at a desk.
4. There's a lot of stress; it's people's lives at
stake if one of us fucks up...and yes, med errors have slipped through the
cracks before Fortunately, the one time that happened was when I was still
green, and no harm was done...thank God.
5. I have to magically answer the phones at two different nurses'
stations...if I had mastered the art of teleportation, this wouldn't be a
problem.
6. I have to take care of the duties at both nurses' stations, as the
nurses don't feel obligated to even check the orders before I get to
them...as I said, morale is shot to hell now.
7. So much shit is "first priority," I have no fucking idea what I'm
supposed to do first anymore...gotta love bureaucracy...
8. If we are forced to work another floor in additon to our own in spite
of being stretched so thin we could double as guitar strings, we don't
have the
option of saying no; it is "you will" rather than" will you?"
9. The admissions department no longer brings us the blue cards we need to
actually do things for a patient, so I have to magically levitate them up
here, too
10. And, now that I have my BLS, they want me to transport patients as
well.
To add to the winter of my discontent, here's a basic summary of what I do
all damn night:
Take off shitloads of orders, put away labs, reports, and other sundry
paperwork, answer phones, answer desk inquiries, call people for various
things, put the fucking tape on the stupid charts so the doctors don't have
to think, keep track of the cards, stamp up the paperwork, make sure the
paperwork is kept in stock, keep track of the blue cards, copy charts for
swings, do admissions, dismissal, and formulary interchanges all while
keeping a fucking smile on my face.
After all, how can the "customers" know we're happy if we don't smile?
Yeah, I'm griping...but I have my reasons...
