Due to the fact that several bored coworkers (including myself), surfed the net, did some chatting, checked email, or checked ebay, the administration, in their INFINITE wisdom, have decided that anyone who uses the internet for "anything other than healthcare purposes" will be suspended or terminated.

So, I sat there, work completed, watching the mildew collect, as we are no longer allowed any rights, including having drinks near the nurses' station...before long, I'm sure they won't even let me read or write anything non-healthcare-related at the desk. Hell, pretty soon we'll probably have to go to the breakroom just to order food, much less eat it...not that I'm allowed to leave the desk anymore unless I have someone practically sign in blood that they are going to cover the phone while I am away...

And I came to one, previously undiscovered conclusion: this job is so fucking BORING.

So, I will follow the other really good employees...and get the hell out of Dodge...

I have a BA in English, no ties besides family and my cats, and a strong urge to get away from this cesspool. I'm open to suggestions. What would you do in my place?

Yeah, I got hit with the "use the computers only for business" crap a couple of days ago. One of my damned coworkers has been checking the dating services and leaving them on the friggin' monitors at work. This is uncomfortable in the west, but here it makes people go bright scarlet and apoplectic (a land of contrasts, I assure you). So now I have to walk twenty minutes to a PC bong and pay hourly charges to check my friggin' mail. The real kicker here is, this guy just dropped a million won to get a pc in his apartment. I'm the only one who doesn't have access to the "personal" part in "personal computers", and, once again, I have to pay the piper for somebody else's sloppiness. Fuckin' people.

Well, I always closed windows after I was done.

I recently found out that some people get brownie points for snitching on their coworkers. I guess I'm lucky I haven't been fired yet...*snickers*

I guess I just have to live with it, for now....but I have a friend that does sex texting, and she's trying to hook me up with that. The pays good, but there are no additional benefits, so it's a bit of a tradeoff.

Advantage being, though, I could live anywhere and still do my job.

Food for thought.

Well, that's not the best part of it.

I haven't read this anywhere, it just comes from chit-chat with USA lawyers that I know of, but it seems your Supreme Court ruled in 1998 that there is no right to privacy about internet connections from work.

The idea is more or less like this: unless otherwise specified by the contract, the computer your company guves you is por professional use only. If it were for personal use as well they'd be paying you "in especimen", part of your sallary wouldn't be money but the allowance of using your computer for personal reasons.

So the worker KNOWS the computer is for work only. Meaning that ANYTHING downloaded through the company's server (or into the company's hard disk) is theoreticallu for work and thus the company has access to it. Meaning they can check their Histories and visited pages, read mail (none of it is personal, it is business) , et cetera. The idea is that when the worker knowingly and willinglt uses his work computer for personal use is tacitly waving away his right to privacy, much like he does when he knows a conversation in being recoreded. From the point of wiew of the Science of Law, the reasoning is flawless. You have been told not this computer is a means to an specific end. You willingly have put yourself in a dangerous position in which you have waved one of your rights. So, that's your decision.

I also heard there is a similar plea right now in which an ex-worker is suing his former company becouse they read his private e-mail and has, from the beginning, claimed that that was proffessional misconduct on his part (he used the computer willingly for personal purposes) and paid the company for such misuse. That MIGHT have a chance of getting an indemnization but I wouldn't bet on it...

As for you, Lady Cygnet, you know what do I tell everyone else. Come down here to Madrid, enjoy its gothic scene and earn a living by teaching English. I know of several USA schools and universities down here (I had to do some research to take my LSAT just in case...).

Oh, there might be a slight communication proble, here, though. Spanish cats dont say meow, they say miau

So.. where in the constitution is the right to the internet guarenteed?

There are many many many wrse jobs... pedicurist, proctologist, prison barber, delouser, and wastewater treatment worker.

in your position, since there is not much physical labr invovled and you make a great pay copared to mc donalds... I would search for another job while being relived that I was not unemployed in today's job climate.

Feral: I am not about to quit until I have another job lined up...and I'll thank you not to sound like my ex-MIL. My parents didn't raise me to be stupid...just to do something when I wish to rise above the inane and annoying.

The Internet crackdown was just icing on the cake. Since i took this job, they have been creating more and more stupid rules and policies. It's a wonder any of us can breathe, much less do our jobs. The further we bend, the further we're bent. You wouldn't believe half of the rigamarole it takes just to be able to get a fucking break. And, by law, we are supposed to get our fucking breaks...but we don't. We don't have the manpower to leave the floor, or else the phones ring and the patients suffer.

This job is not labor-intensive, but it is very much stress-intensive. The fact that I must SIT and do NOTHING until I am given more work is really irritating. That, and I'm supposed to fucking magically teleport myself to the other unit on the floor and do their work too. So I run between stations, doing orders, putting away paperwork, etc...

No job is really worth it unless it requires thought. I was able to compensate before by doing research while I worked...but I can't do that anymore either...

The girl 6 job looks more tempting by the minute...

It isn't really wise for them to assume we'll continue to bend to their blind will when our talents can be redirected elsewhere...

Hey, if you'd like to try my job, be my guest...

It's bad enough working in a high-stress environment, but when the underbelly gets ripped open and it turns out that people you trusted aren't worth trusting, it ceases to be worth the effort...

Almost of the good ones are leaving anyway...I'd rather not be stuck with all that's left behind...

I already have a lot on my plate without this bullshit. A flagging economy is no excuse for reaming your employees.

Well, due to certain rules about my job, there are certain rules I can't discuss...

Like I said, it's a lot of shit hitting the fan at once...allow me to clarify:

1. The hours suck. Even though I work evenings, I'm expected to pull dayshift on weekends...and I'm lucky if I get a friday night off before I work a Saturday morning. They ignore that little labor rule about the 8 hour gap sometimes.
2. the work environment is hostile. When I feel as though I'm walking on eggshells, it's time to go.
3. We have to jump through so many hoops to even take
a break...and some people think I don't need a break because my job is mostly done at a desk.
4. There's a lot of stress; it's people's lives at
stake if one of us fucks up...and yes, med errors have slipped through the cracks before Fortunately, the one time that happened was when I was still green, and no harm was done...thank God.
5. I have to magically answer the phones at two different nurses' stations...if I had mastered the art of teleportation, this wouldn't be a problem.
6. I have to take care of the duties at both nurses' stations, as the nurses don't feel obligated to even check the orders before I get to them...as I said, morale is shot to hell now.
7. So much shit is "first priority," I have no fucking idea what I'm supposed to do first anymore...gotta love bureaucracy...
8. If we are forced to work another floor in additon to our own in spite of being stretched so thin we could double as guitar strings, we don't have the
option of saying no; it is "you will" rather than" will you?"
9. The admissions department no longer brings us the blue cards we need to actually do things for a patient, so I have to magically levitate them up here, too
10. And, now that I have my BLS, they want me to transport patients as well.

To add to the winter of my discontent, here's a basic summary of what I do all damn night:

Take off shitloads of orders, put away labs, reports, and other sundry paperwork, answer phones, answer desk inquiries, call people for various things, put the fucking tape on the stupid charts so the doctors don't have to think, keep track of the cards, stamp up the paperwork, make sure the paperwork is kept in stock, keep track of the blue cards, copy charts for swings, do admissions, dismissal, and formulary interchanges all while keeping a fucking smile on my face.

After all, how can the "customers" know we're happy if we don't smile?

Yeah, I'm griping...but I have my reasons...

(since it won't let me edit, I'm just tacking this on)

Before all of this started happeneing, this was a pretty cool place to work...then came the new rules, new prohibitions, and even more changes...

The entire vibe of the place has changed. Where we used to work well together, laugh together, and have really cool nights no matter how shitty the situation became, we're at each others' throats 24/7. No one can trust anyone else. When one comes to the floor, the new hostility is tangible...

And that, my dears, is the probably the main reason I want to leave. When I get a gut feeling that something is seriously out of whack, I'm usually right on the money. All the signs tell me it's time to go anyway. I'm ready.

Feral. you had a valid complaint, and I did need to clarify. *grin*

Well, at least wastewater doesn't give a dam (heh) if you answer the phone, take a break, or do something constructive when it's moving slow. *gratuitous tongue wiggle*

I still owe you one, m'dear...*wink*
