Volunteer veterinarians, etc. could have given the chickens "euthanasia injections", but it would have incredibly time consuming.

So the next option, cyanide-filled (or other quick acting gas) airtight chamber or chambers with the chickens brought in in groups.

The long term option. Stop factory farming altogether. (I do sometimes write letters and emails to ask companies, and government commisions, etc. to help stop animal abuse.)

This article reminds me of a show I watched on the Public Access channel one nite. It was a show on vegeterianism and they happened to show a 5 minute clip of the butchers in a large factory killing chickens. The murderers would grab the chickens out of their cages and then bend the chickens head back and quickly, with one swift flick of the wrist, slice the chickens neck. The chickens were then either tossed head first into cylindrical container, or tossed into a machine that looked very similar to a wood chipper. The other accomplice in the murder then grabbed the chickens out of that machine and hang them by their feet on a conveyor track. The chickens would then ride out into another room. One even fell, he had been hanging by one leg, and was still alive. The butcher went and grabbed the chicken and slit its throat again.

I probably would not have half the problem I do with meat and animal product consumption if factory farms did not exsist. I still would be vegan, I still would dislike the fact that people eat meat, but I wouldn't be so fucking outraged, disgusted, and angry as I am over the matter. And I still stand by the fact that if everyone had to kill their dinner, they would stop eating meat. Because THEN they would have to see beyond the billboards in the supermarket displaying happy animals in green fields that are overjoyed to be cut up, cleaned, dyed, and placed in handy sterile conscience friendly plastic containers.

I just spent a good deal of time giving examples of what factory farms do, but really, it won't do any good and it won't make a difference. If anyone cares, look it up. It's not hype, it's a disgusting reality. Take a little responsibility in what you eat.

not everybody... I know I can kill my own dinner, after it has spent a happy year in a green field, and Yes, I will pet the animal! I will name it, and I will pay it homage at dinnertime... and thank it for giving its life for mine... and I will have fresh new leather clothes in the bargain.. but yeah, factory farms are nasty and awful. damn unsanitary places, that sell tainted meat... if any of you had ever tasted fresh, raw cow... you'd search for a nice small family farm to sell some livestock to you... right now, the only farm product we get are duck and goose eggs from a farmer who brings them in where Rogue works... the ducks and geese are free-range and lay an excellent breakfast... and the shells make nice ornaments and cups... and they're all-natural... and very yummy. make the best banana bread...

now now dollface I didn't say all, and MOST people didn't grow up on farms that treated their animals well like you and a few others did

Like I said, my main, fermenting, venomous gripe is with factory farms, period.
I might even keep my mouth shut most of the time on the subject if they didn't exist....but well, I'd have to sometimes because then I just wouldn't be the club wielding vegan of doom if I didn't *lol*

Uh-huh... it's the way the factory farms are run that's got to change. Quite honestly, if there were no factory farms, it would be a lot harder to get a dozen eggs at your grocery store. A lot of people would have a very limited food supply, because they couldn't get meat and eggs... they would have no idea how to get that protein.. and if all the animals in bondage were liberated and sent to live in the wild, there would be an awful lot of fat happy predators running around. and then they'd have a bounty put on them and be killed by the hundreds. horrible, ain't it? Now, what needs to happen is the food inspectors need to do their jobs and not take bribes to look the other way. The processing needs to be done more slowly and carefully, and the animals need to be well-taken care of instead of just left to rot in a feed lot. the revolution needs to be about changing the system, not abolishing it altogether...

Right, and the reason there is such a hellish demand for those products is because of a few reasons (these are examples encompasing the general public, if it doesn't pertain to you, then don't get upset because I'm not referring to you):
1) the amount in which people consume such products daily
2) the massive population growth the world (especially our country) has seen the the last 40 years
3) the demand to feed that massive population growth on a diet that has increasingly become psychologically dependent on massive amounts of those products daily (not in moderation)
4) the demand for those same products at the cheapest price available (animal welfare be damned and even be damned to the financial stability of the person who cares for them)

Control of our OWN population is where to start, and the population that exists now to practice the simple act of moderating the sheer amount of animal products they consume daily.

I live in a dream world where tho not every single person will be vegetarian, but where people are moderate and reasonable in their consumption of said products, and where yes, factory farms do not exist. Because they would be unnecessary. If everyone that consumed animal products cut back even a little every day (or take the next step and go a little or a lot out of your way to attain these products from non factory farms or from grocery chains that are not supplied by factory farms), it would decrease the demand SERIOUSLY. This drop in the bucket for each individual would have an impact that would be widespread. With a decrease in population growth that could slow or stop the growth in urban sprawl and giant cities, there would be less of a need for gigantic chain grocery stores to feed those urban masses that are supplied by factory farms, and a decrease of the demands wraught apon the animals in their "care".

It's not just a "revolution" on the behalf of the "lower" species that I ask for (and I do ask for so much *lol*) but one on behalf of every person that lives and breathes on this massively overpopulated and helplessly polluted planet that is very close to being unable to support life for much longer.

Right how, here today, at this very minute, you are right maranda. Reform of the system is the first step to take, and hopefully it will not simply stop there, but right now that is the way to begin. A massive, sudden overhaul will not work. It would have to be a slow process, and it is more than certain that I will not see it anytime in MY lifetime, but I'm okay with that.

It is already evident in such food chains as Safeway and McDonald's, who under pressure from PeTA and supporting boycots and public actions have lead to their agreement to no longer sell animal products that come from producers that abuse or mistreat their animals. They have turned to their suppliers and in turn made legal agreements that they will be subject to random inspections of their facilities and processing plants and should any sign of neglect, abuse, or torture be evident, they would sever their contract with that supplier immediately and give that contract to a different supplier.
That is a massive step in the 'right' direction. A spokeswoman from PeTA said "It is a massive victory for animal rights everywhere. Tho the animals are still being killed, these corporations have stepped up to the plate to do the right thing and improve their quality of life. It's a small step, but definitely a good one. They have our respect".
And they have mine too.

Wonderfully said Bettie.

I belong to Peta (along with several other animal rights organizations *lol*) and they send out stickers and small message inserts for members to put on and in letters and bills, etc. The stickers and inserts deal with the issue of animal circuses, fur wearing, trying vegetarianism, and of course factory farming. I think that putting the stickers on letters seems to get the messages out to at least those who directly handle that letter. It may be only for a moment, but at least they've gotten exposed. I had thought that my family members had been ignoring the little inserts in their letters and cards until the other day...when I actually had someone say they carry one of the inserts that I sent them in their wallet now. It was a nice feeling.

That's a good idea of them and all that, but I tend to be a sort of "if you wanna know, I'll tell you, but you probably won't like it" person when it comes down to it.
Don't get me wrong, you are right that even if it's only absorbed for a moment by one person, it might be enough to get them to look into it themselves.

I've also discovered a phenomena in my town recently...and mind you it's a (or was) a very small town run by old people and people were pretty much of one type....truck, meat, potatoes, dirt. This new phenomena? VEGAN TEENAGERS. A LOT OF THEM.
I was a vegetarian my last years of highschool, and when anyone said anything and I'd tell them I was vegetarian, they'd look at me and ask what kind of cult that was *lol* I was in the Fred Meyer (all hail fred meyer and it's ever expanding organic/veggie/vegan health food isles) and I saw A LOT of kids buying boca burgers and soy ice cream and whatnot, and MORE than a few wearing PeTA and VEGAN Tshirts. A girl I work with actually went to the same school I did (she was in 8th grade when I graduated so we never met until now) and she lives in the same area I do, and she's a vegan, and has informed me that a LOT of her friends from highschool are vegan too. NOT vegetarian, but VEGAN. It tripped me out big time. I overheard two boys in the same store bickering over what candy to buy, and then one said "No we don't want THAT one, it's got GELATIN in it!" to which the other boy put it back and said "EW".

I swear I thought I'd stumbled into an alternate universe.

ANd it's seriously making me reconsider my dream of opening up a vegan/vegetarian restaurant in the area. There's a spot near the highschool even that just vacated.

If anyone wins the lottery and wants to make me REAL happy, I could use some startup money *wink* but then again it'd probably be more profitable to go start searching for govt. grants!

No shit that's what I said. And it wasn't just a few, it was QUITE a few. And I'm not talking little hipsters or even little punkrock kids, or even little hippies, they were just average small townish teenagers...wearing vegan t shirts. Made my goddamn day.

yeah, hindsight is 20/20 and all that.
But now I can plainly see why I was so friggin fat and tired and sick and unhappy.
Drive throughs, fast foods, easy dinners (not just meat, but it always involved a good size piece of meat). My favorite thing in the world was steak...big fat steak. I would have eaten steak every day for the rest of my life if I could have, and things like bbQ ribs and MEAT MEAT MEAT! Since Burger King whoppers were cheap, that was my lunch every day on my way to college (I did that fantastic running start bit halleluja). A whopper every day. EVERY DAY.
When I started learning about vegetarianism and stopped eating meat, my energy level soared, the pounds dropped off (60lbs in about 8 months), my skin cleared up, and I wasn't always sick to my stomach. If I had learned about veganism earlier, I honestly think I would have been a much happier, healthier person than I was.
But I"m okay with simply having the knowledge now, and I'm REALLY glad that so many kids have taken an interest in it.
