Diamond Throne
Category : Other Stuff
Author : David Eddings, Leigh Eddings
ISBN (No Dashes) : 0345367693
|
|
Description : The Diamond Throne is basically about a group of knights trying to save someone who had been poisoned. The victim happens to be the queen of Elenia, in a mass political plot to put her bastard cousin on the throne. As the Queen's Champion Sparhawk and his companions search for a cure, international church politics and a magic spell that kills the participant in order to sustain the Queen lend urgency to the quest. While this does follow a more traditional fantasy line of knights, wizards, and whatnot, the feel of the book and the relationships between the people make the world believable. Each character has been specifically brought to light to portray them as people, and few characters are represented as completely good or completely evil. The basic storyline is easy to follow and makes a quick read, the intricacies of each character make it interesting. The first book in the Elenium trilogy, it is about opening this world and seeing what is going on before the main story completely unfolds.

Catch-22
Category : Other Stuff
Author : Joseph L. Heller
ISBN (No Dashes) : 0684833395
|
|
Description : There was a time when reading Joseph Heller's classic satire on the murderous insanity of war was nothing less than a rite of passage. Echoes of Yossarian, the wise-ass bombardier who was too smart to die but not smart enough to find a way out of his predicament, could be heard throughout the counterculture. As a result, it's impossible not to consider Catch-22 to be something of a period piece. But 40 years on, the novel's undiminished strength is its looking-glass logic. Again and again, Heller's characters demonstrate that what is commonly held to be good, is bad; what is sensible, is nonsense.

Filled with shocks and chilling surprises, The Magus is a masterwork of contemporary literature. In it, a young Englishman, Nicholas Urfe, accepts a teaching position on a Greek island where his friendship with the owner of the islands most magnificent estate leads him into a nightmare. As reality and fantasy are deliberately confused by staged deaths, erotic encounters, and terrifying violence, Urfe becomes a desperate man fighting for his sanity and his life. A work rich with symbols, conundrums and labrinthine twists of event, The Magus is as thought-provoking as it is entertaining, a work that ranks with the best novels of modern times.

Gardner's Art Through the Ages
Category : Other Stuff
Author : Richard Tansev, Fred S. Kleiner, Horst De LA Croix, Richard G. Tansey, Helen Gardner
ISBN (No Dashes) : 0155011413
|
|
Description : This is an excellent reference and study guide for all of you art history nerds out there. It is extensive in all the important areas of Western art history. It is a little skimpy on the rest of the world and their art, however this is understandable being that they want to keep the information in one book rather than a library. I have heard that this is one of the first editions of this text to include female artist.
To the authors: Welcome to the twenty first century; I highly recommend your book boys.
