The Bad Beginning (A Series of Unfortunate Events, Book 1)
Category : Other Stuff
Author : Lemony Snicket
ISBN (No Dashes) : 0064407667
|
|
Description : “If you are interested in stories with happy endings, you would be better off reading some other book. In this book, not only is there no happy ending, there is no happy beginning and very few happy things in the middle.”
In this Book the First, by Lemony Snicket, you are taken through the terribly unfortunate world of the Baudelaire orphans, whose parents were tragically killed in a horrible fire that robbed the Baudelaire’s of any happiness they might have known. From there they are accompanied by the incompetent Mr. Poe, who always has his handkerchief close at hand, to live with their first, but not last, guardian. Their guardian, as fate would have it, is none other than the wretched Count Olaf, whose manners and personal hygiene leave much to be desired, and the company he keeps is only more tragic. His gothic mansion is disturbing and dark, and everywhere you go mysterious eyes follows you always watching, even from Olaf’s ankle. The book is a delightfully dark and ghoulish read.

ISBN (No Dashes) : 0440351626
|

Description : A man trapped in a millionare's deadly game of political and sexual betrayal.
Filled with shocks and chilling surprises, The Magus is a masterwork of contemporary literature. In it, a young Englishman, Nicholas Urfe, accepts a teaching position on a Greek island where his friendship with the owner of the islands most magnificent estate leads him into a nightmare. As reality and fantasy are deliberately confused by staged deaths, erotic encounters, and terrifying violence, Urfe becomes a desperate man fighting for his sanity and his life. A work rich with symbols, conundrums and labrinthine twists of event, The Magus is as thought-provoking as it is entertaining, a work that ranks with the best novels of modern times.

Catch-22
Category : Other Stuff
Author : Joseph L. Heller
ISBN (No Dashes) : 0684833395
|
|
Description : There was a time when reading Joseph Heller's classic satire on the murderous insanity of war was nothing less than a rite of passage. Echoes of Yossarian, the wise-ass bombardier who was too smart to die but not smart enough to find a way out of his predicament, could be heard throughout the counterculture. As a result, it's impossible not to consider Catch-22 to be something of a period piece. But 40 years on, the novel's undiminished strength is its looking-glass logic. Again and again, Heller's characters demonstrate that what is commonly held to be good, is bad; what is sensible, is nonsense.

The Sexual Politics of Meat: A Feminist-Vegetarian Critical Theory
Category : Other Stuff
Author : Carol J. Adams
ISBN (No Dashes) : 0826405134
|
|
Description : Basically the title says it all. The book discusses the sexual politics of meat, the rape of animals and the butchering of women, the masked violence and the vegeterian's muted voices, dismembered texts and dismembered animals, feminism the great war, and modern vegeterianism. It also discusses the distortion of the vegeterian body. I do say that it is a slow start, but once you get into the book it is very very good.
