It's approaching the 10 year anniversary of the death of Nirvana's lead
singer, Kurt Cobain. For the past day and a half, any TV channel associated
with music has been running amok talking about the band and his death and
it will mostly be like that until a few days after the 8th. I'm a fan of
Nirvana, but I'm in no way obsessive about them. I have my own reasons for
enjoying their music and my own opinion about Cobain's death, but I'd like
to know what you all think of it, especially since some of you are from the
Seattle area.
Was it murder or suicide?
Why do you believe what you do?

I'm so sick of nirvana right now you don't even know.
My radio in my car is broken so if you don't "finesse" the volume knob to
lower the volume it'll turn up to earsplitting decibles, like this morning,
so I got my eardrums cleaned thanks to fucking nirvana.
He killed himself. Even tho I hate to burst the bubble of cable access's
famous host of "curt cobaine was murdered" documentaries, he was a
depressed junkie MARRIED to a psychopathic junkie who two weeks before his
death spent a length of time in a fucking OD coma.
I'm sorry, but courtney love couldn't fucking focus on ANYTHING long
enough to pull off the perfect murder.

ya know, i just read the title of the forum and i just knew that this was
gonna be about Kurt cobain.
personally Nirvana opened the door to music for me...i stilll remember when
i first heard "smells like teen spirit". my brother and i were up late, i
had the top bunk and he the bottom....i also had the remote....i was
flipping channels...and there was MTV and it was on...my brother and i had
never heard anything like that...we just watched silently until it was
over....we kept flipping channels to see if it was playing anywhere
else....i felt like i had finally discovered music.

it was suicide... and if it was murder... what does it honestly matter?

Feh. Dead is dead is dead. Unless he was banging a Kennedy on the side and
had the photos to prove it, I really don't see why there would be such a
noisy conspiracy theory around it.
Has anyone else heard the joke "What color were Kurt Cobains eyes?"

Cobain the friendly ghost.

Bettie: Hate to sound like a twit here, but A-THE-FUCK-MEN. I fully agree
with you.
While I extend my sympathies to those who were affected by the suicide, I
have no respect for Kurt Cobain. He did it to himself. In fact, the only
reason why he is given a lot of attention than taken with a grain of salt
is because of his music career. If it were not for that, he would of been
just another druggie, bumming on the streets.
That's my opinion on him...I just have no sympathy for those who commit
suicide. I don't like it when people push people to do it, but it's an act
that shows lack of values, not to mention it 'victimizes' the person. It
also shows a sign of self-pity. Just imagine having a best friend who all
of a sudden decides to pick up the gun and end it right there. Wouldn't
you be haunted with the memories, asking, "Why?" That's why I do not like
the act of suicide...unless it's to save another person's life.

Ok. Let's look at the reality of this.
You have a kid from Seattle who dressed in clothes 3 times too big for him.
They were wrinkled and crusty. His hair was tangled, greasy and he probably
only showered once a month. I actually liked teen spirit until, like other
songs I grimace to hear, it got played 500 times in a week. Then I heard
the rest of his music and realized he actually didn't sing... he whined and
mumbled poetry about "oh whoa is me" to music. Hell, I cannot stand "I just
want to kill myself" attitudes from people I know, let alone listen to it
on the radio.
So how the fuck did he become God? Because everyone started dressing in
oversized clothing and stopped taking showers this guy is the father of
stinky teenagers! Now he is being treated like Elvis! Next thing you know
people will be saying he is still alive and they spotted him at Quickie
Mart buying a slurpie.
He died 10 years ago! Get over it and stop playing his songs all freaking
day over and over on the anniversary of his death. It makes me want to
shoot tattered greasy kids in the head.

and so is Tupac, hendrix, a beatle, and many others.
but does how they died mean that their music meant any less? the fact that
kurt killed himself doesn't really matter at all when i think about how his
music influenced me. btw i'm not jumping down anyones throat or angry....
besides i'm sure you guys in Seatle are sick of it, i guess i would be too.
yes i was and am still a fan. And Anya i totally agree with your statement
on suicide....the way i feel about his is it was a wussy way out and he
cheated himself and his family. then again he wasn't just another druggie
was he??? their are many musicians today that try and fail to emulate him.
note: That's just the way i feel. don't read into it too much.....i'm not
at all as serious about this as i may sound.

I'm pretty sure it was nothing more than a suicide. I think the only thing
Courtney is capable of killing is her own career. I will always, always
have a soft spot in my heart for Nirvana. When i first heard Bleach (circa
12-13 or so) it inspired me personally, to an extent that I really can't
describe. Even after all these years I will still pop it in occasionally
and listen, and think back to my formative years. i remember one of my
friends getting kicked out of school for wearing her "Corporate Rock Whore"
t-shirt to class.
Cobain's suicide was unfortunate, but I don't feel as though I am in a
position to judge. Surely many of us have had days where just getting it
all over with didn't seem like such a bad idea. Throw in an overly
sensitive personality, the pressure of being famous, and a drug
addiction...and that's it. There have been many other wonderfully talented
people who committed slow suicide in less obvious ways.
So, I don't mind that they play it up in the news and on the radio. It
brings back some really good memories for me, and some really bad ones.
Take what you will from it, and if you don't like it then crack your jokes
and change the channel. I would still rather listen to any of the songs
from Nevermind than 99% of the crap that they play on the radio today
anyway.

For what it's worth, at the time he died, I do remember actually mourning
his death to a degree. He made an impact on music, he's still talked about
and his music is still played, this is the proof of that impact. I guess
it's a while back now, and I just add him to the list of people in music
who passed on already. I'm not really sure why the radio stations are going
on so much about it all, but I guess they just do that sort of thing for
ratings. Besides, Ms. Courtney keeps herself all over the news, so I guess
that's why it's still right there in people's minds about Kurt Cobain's
suicide.

My take on the whole argument on the suicide or murder question is that it
was most likely a suicide. I wouldn't be surprised though, if Courtney Love
was right there urging him on to do it. That wouldn't make it murder, but
it would make her a really sick person.

It isn't really a matter of judgment on my part, I just do not appreciate
what the person doesn't consider when it's done. Then again maybe I need
to lighten up, but I am sure that people can relate to my position on the
suicide.
no... it does not make their music mean any less... but no offense, the
music did not mean much to begin with,,, their not even caling the style
grunge any more... most stations are calling it punk... makes you wonder
doesn't it?

feral: i had heard that it was the radio stations and mostly press that
began calling it grunge in the first place. i don't even think that the
musicians that were getting called "grunge rockers" liked the category
anyway. also grunge doesn't just have Nirvana to blame for it's
being.....their was Pearl Jam, the Pumpkins, and more. people tend to
forget that it just wasn't Nirvana that started the whole so called "grunge
movement".
btw, of course his music "meant much", otherwise (some) musicians wouldn't
be trying to emulate him now.
what gets me is that ten years after his death he can still get the cover
of just about any rock magazine.....lol

Perl Jam and smashing were Rock before grrunge came into being... nirvana
had a uunique sound untill they were copied by a dozen other bands... and
the fact of the matter is the unique sound was cobbled from several
different styles... guitars slightly out of tune - funk, WAY too much over
drive and distortion on the stop boxes - metal, odd musical arrangements -
punk, and the one thing that set the aside was the unintelligble lyrics...
Now ... no offense to anyone.,.. but they were not punk... the radio
stations around here are calling them punk and metal... they were a sound
all their own which pretty much died with cobain... sooo... my point is...
like the tit... leave it be...
Now on the flip sided, there is a lot of evidence pointing to possible
homicide... but there was just as much for suicide... and frankly the guy
who found him called the radio stations BEFORE the police... so you do the
math...
Like oj, MJ, JJ and britney... I have heard enough of this topic to last 10
lifetimes...
