It's approaching the 10 year anniversary of the death of Nirvana's lead
singer, Kurt Cobain. For the past day and a half, any TV channel associated
with music has been running amok talking about the band and his death and
it will mostly be like that until a few days after the 8th. I'm a fan of
Nirvana, but I'm in no way obsessive about them. I have my own reasons for
enjoying their music and my own opinion about Cobain's death, but I'd like
to know what you all think of it, especially since some of you are from the
Seattle area.
Was it murder or suicide?

Heh, to top it all, why do people have to sympathise with those who commit
useless suicides? As much as I love the old Japanese culture, I thought
hara-kiri/seppuku was a bit awkward as well.
Off the death topic, there's something to be said about a man who makes a
song called "Only If I Had A Gun" (or something similar to those lines).
It doesn't necessarily mean that he was suicidal with that song, mind you,
but it still carries that wallowing, constant self-pity crasse that makes
me change my Rock station to the Trance station. This is my opinion,
though. Kurt Cobain wasn't the only one who made such songs, but he
happens to be one of those people who did such songs and I get sick of
hearing that kind of music on the radio. For those who complain about
Country being whiney and listen to some of today's Alternative/Rock music,
well, there's whiney music in there now as well.
Granted, I would have listened to such music as a thirteen year-old girl,
but I grew out of it. There's nothing wrong with morbid music, but there's
a difference between morbid and "woe to me, woe to me".

you are arguing it because you had to live thru it the first time. it was
such a HUGE media blitz and the fecking updates always ran over and cut
into shows you wanted to see. and the idiots out there would pretend to
console you for the death of your god. and we all wanted to rock as well as
Courtney does.
And for the record i am usiing the plural "you" meaning everyone over say
27 now, not the personal you. ____________________ Real goths wear silver and crosses to keep the werewolves and vampires

Oh, zero, there's actually only one beatle left. And that very man is
responsible for "Wings" *shudder*
Oh, plus one station was playing nothing but nirvana AND alice in chains
cuz lane staley ALSO OD'd on that wonderful day.
I'm sorry, but to me it amounts to "radio angst" on my behalf once a year
(ie: punching the radio and crying to make it STOP), and everyone in the
world who thinks I'm tasteless and mean for playing shotgun blasts before
every requested nirvana song in college radio can ALL relish in my silence
and return my nirvana-hatred when they announce Johnny Cash day. I'll take
it in silence and with reserve.
And where are the yearly remorseful joey ramone tributes? Candle light
vigils for Joe Strummer?
Let's face it people freak out cuz it's seattle, Wa, and everything here is
teary bleary drama and if you're not miserable, you're not happy. ____________________ Trapped in time. Surrounded by evil. Low on gas. |

Perl Jam and smashing were Rock before grrunge came into being... nirvana
had a uunique sound untill they were copied by a dozen other bands... and
the fact of the matter is the unique sound was cobbled from several
different styles... guitars slightly out of tune - funk, WAY too much over
drive and distortion on the stop boxes - metal, odd musical arrangements -
punk, and the one thing that set the aside was the unintelligble lyrics...
Now ... no offense to anyone.,.. but they were not punk... the radio
stations around here are calling them punk and metal... they were a sound
all their own which pretty much died with cobain... sooo... my point is...
like the tit... leave it be...
Now on the flip sided, there is a lot of evidence pointing to possible
homicide... but there was just as much for suicide... and frankly the guy
who found him called the radio stations BEFORE the police... so you do the
math...
Like oj, MJ, JJ and britney... I have heard enough of this topic to last 10
lifetimes... ____________________ The earth turns on a tilted axis - just doing the best it can.

feral: i had heard that it was the radio stations and mostly press that
began calling it grunge in the first place. i don't even think that the
musicians that were getting called "grunge rockers" liked the category
anyway. also grunge doesn't just have Nirvana to blame for it's
being.....their was Pearl Jam, the Pumpkins, and more. people tend to
forget that it just wasn't Nirvana that started the whole so called "grunge
movement".
btw, of course his music "meant much", otherwise (some) musicians wouldn't
be trying to emulate him now.
what gets me is that ten years after his death he can still get the cover
of just about any rock magazine.....lol

doesn't it? ____________________ The earth turns on a tilted axis - just doing the best it can.

It isn't really a matter of judgment on my part, I just do not appreciate
what the person doesn't consider when it's done. Then again maybe I need
to lighten up, but I am sure that people can relate to my position on the
suicide. |

My take on the whole argument on the suicide or murder question is that it
was most likely a suicide. I wouldn't be surprised though, if Courtney Love
was right there urging him on to do it. That wouldn't make it murder, but
it would make her a really sick person. ____________________ "When choosing between two evils, I always like to try the one I've never

For what it's worth, at the time he died, I do remember actually mourning
his death to a degree. He made an impact on music, he's still talked about
and his music is still played, this is the proof of that impact. I guess
it's a while back now, and I just add him to the list of people in music
who passed on already. I'm not really sure why the radio stations are going
on so much about it all, but I guess they just do that sort of thing for
ratings. Besides, Ms. Courtney keeps herself all over the news, so I guess
that's why it's still right there in people's minds about Kurt Cobain's
suicide. ____________________ "When choosing between two evils, I always like to try the one I've

I'm pretty sure it was nothing more than a suicide. I think the only thing
Courtney is capable of killing is her own career. I will always, always
have a soft spot in my heart for Nirvana. When i first heard Bleach (circa
12-13 or so) it inspired me personally, to an extent that I really can't
describe. Even after all these years I will still pop it in occasionally
and listen, and think back to my formative years. i remember one of my
friends getting kicked out of school for wearing her "Corporate Rock Whore"
t-shirt to class.
Cobain's suicide was unfortunate, but I don't feel as though I am in a
position to judge. Surely many of us have had days where just getting it
all over with didn't seem like such a bad idea. Throw in an overly
sensitive personality, the pressure of being famous, and a drug
addiction...and that's it. There have been many other wonderfully talented
people who committed slow suicide in less obvious ways.
So, I don't mind that they play it up in the news and on the radio. It
brings back some really good memories for me, and some really bad ones.
Take what you will from it, and if you don't like it then crack your jokes
and change the channel. I would still rather listen to any of the songs
from Nevermind than 99% of the crap that they play on the radio today
anyway. ____________________ Wind me up and make me crawl to you, tie me up until I call to you. |
