I know that ELF doesn't kill people for the sake of animals, but you know
there are people out there that do, or at least think we should.
I am being a bit of a devil's advocate here, and I'm just trying to follow
a certain line of reasoning to it's extreme end, so please don't attack me!
*trembles in a corner*
Suppose you think that animals have the same right as humans. When humans
kill humans, they get the death penalty (sometimes). So if a human kills
an animal, they should still get the death penalty.
OK, I know that most animal activists don't think this. But I also know
that some people do. And it scares me.
But wait - I'm not done. If animals and humans are on the same level, then
what if an animal kills an animal? Does the predator get the death
penalty? If not, then why humans?
Or skip the death penalty - how about any penalty? Even guilt and blame?
If animals and men are really on the same level, does that make us
predators?
OK, so we kill needlessly, and cruelly.
Ever seee a housecat kill a mouse? A fat, well-fed housecat? It doesn't
need the mouse, and it sure likes playing little games of catch with the
poor terrified creature. So do we attribute guilt and blame on the cat?
Now I will stop being devil's advocate and state my own thoughts.
I think humans and animals are not on the same level. And animals and
plants are not on the same level. And plants and rocks are not on the same
level.
This, however, does not mean that I can do whatever I feel like to animal,
plant, or rock. It is necessary to have respect and to be compassionate,
even to other forms of being.
I think the slaughterhouses are disgusting, horrifying, and terribly wrong.
I would like to be a vegetarian, or maybe even vegan, but to be honest, I
have so much going on in my life right now I haven't taken the time to
rearrange my eating habits. It may be a cop-out, but everyone cops out on
something or other in their lives. You can't do everything.
I don't think anything should be destroyed without good reason, and if it
has to be destroyed, do it gently and reverently.
Being a higher form of being does not give you the right to be cruel, it
gives you the responsibility to care. Like a parent does to a child. We
are meant to be caretakers of the world, not bullies and rapists.
Unfortunately, we have gotten so far from our true design, that it's hard
to find the way back.
And the "lesser" forms of being often have gifts that we humans have lost.
The keen sense of smell of a dog, the long, almost eternal life-span of a
tree, the durability of a granite boulder - these are all things that we
should respect and honor.
Because we have more freedom of choice than these creatures, we have the
ability to walk away from our place and choose another. And animal follows
its instinct. A plant grows toward its sources of food. A stone just sits
there and obeys the laws of gravity. But we can choose. We can preserve,
or destroy, as the whim takes us. Or we can fight our whims, if we
please.
Let's choose to preserve and honor. As much as lies in our abilities. ____________________ "You can tell by the scars on my arms and the cracks in my hips and the

If animal experimentation is gonna cure Aids or some other horible
disease shouldn't we do it? I don't like the idea of lab animals but I
beleive there's a grey area here...and there is a huge difference between
humans and animals....doesn't make them less important i'm just stating a
fact. How many of us have lost a relative to cancer or whatever else that
there is no cure for. Well, what if we could find a cure...but we'd have to
test it on lab rats....or dolphins or the other cuter animals?
By the way there used to be a "save the dolphins" thing going on...
(probably still is)...because they got caught in nets by fishermen trying
to catch tuna.....well what about the tuna...they get caught too....what
makes them different? ____________________ "It is a fool's prerogative to utter truths that no one else will speak." ~

Well, people were upset about the dolphins because its a wasted life. The
fishermen just dump the dead dolphins overboard because they aren't
commercially valuable. Even hunters treat their game better than that. ____________________ Piggy's got the Conch! |
