For some reason, my superstitious grandma among other people was pressuring
my little cousin to write with his right hand - but he's left-handed. I'm
left-handed, but I never stayed with her long enough as a youth so she
could stick me in the same situation. I never really considered being
left-handed as a stigma of sort (though sometimes I practice using my
right-hand for kicks and giggles). Perhaps it comes from cultural
prejudice? Maybe someone knows the superstitions behind the left-handed
stuff...I'm not in to get in any trouble by confronting my grandma.

She's Vietnamese, but still find it a confusing situation culture wise. Of
course, I'm not too adept in every culture...or any culture - not that I
think anyway. Hehe.

if I'm not mistaken, Sinister literally translates into "Left Hand" or
"Left Handed"
A lot of cultures have a bad conotation with left handedness, prolly for
the simple fact that most people are right handed, therefore anyone who is
left handed...and we all know what that means.
Different is bad.
Consequently, black magic is occasionally referred to as the Left Handed
path, one ofthe Indian Gods, I forgot which specifically, can destroy the
spirit of the world with but a touch of it's left hand. Shaking a gypsy's
hand with your left hand is a good way to get killed. The Arabic world
considers the left hand unclean and useful for nose-picking, insulting, ass
scratching and so forth.
Weird really...but superstitiones tend to be based on a diaphanous truth
that tends to be difficult to understand, and easier to relate when
relegated to silly rules.
Personally I just think left handed people are evil and should be shot.

Dolo you hit it right on the head with a big left handed mallot. Evil and
Filth of all sorts across the globe is usually tied to the "left hand" or
the left side of anything. It is thought that Evil approaches from the
left, which is why when you spill salt you toss it over your left shoulder.
It probably IS a psychological/superstitious throwback because MOST people
ARE right handed, hence the weaker and more venerable side is the left, and
it's "unnatural" to have a stronger left side. When the superstitious part
of it sort of dissolved into antiquity for the most part, it was simply
UNHEARD of for someone to write with the left side, and it's sort of just
well...been unconsciously thought that to write with your left hand is
somehow wrong...no reason behind it, it just *IS*.
Same with the whole "pink for girls blue for boys" thing. In ancient times
it was believed that boys (especially first born male children) were more
suceptable to attacks by evil spirits and such, and the color blue was
thought to repell them, as blue has often been seen as a protective color
by many religions, and I THINK is the color for the protective archangel
michael. Hence came the practice of painting the doorways and windows and
eventually the walls of an infant son's room, or the house in which he
lived, blue to block entrance or invasion by evil that would harm the boy,
as well as clothing or wrapping them in blue garments. It was then decided
that baby girl's were getting the short hand of the stick and not having a
color of their own, so someone decided that it should be pink, the color of
dawn and roses and beauty.
Hence we have the old habit/stigma of "gender colors" for infants!
Superstition has so many ties to daily designs and activites that most of
them we don't even REALISE that they are historic throwbacks. Wierd, huh?

Well, what I learned in my Latin class last year was that the word
"sinister" is Latin for "left" and that if someone shook your hand with
their left hand it was a bad sign that perhaps they were hiding a knife
behind their back in their right hand. That is why we shake with our right
hands I suppose. And the fact that the word for left is "sinister". Oooo,
fire and brimstone, the left hand is evil....LMAO!

My lil bro is left handed, and we tease him all the time about it. He has a
book entirely dedicated to famous left handed people through out history.
What it dose not mention is the statisics that 75% of serial killers are
left handed (if I remember correctly). Also historicaly when the little
angel and little devil appeared on someone's shoulder the angel would be on
the right and the devil on the left.

I heard of a few of the things mentioned in this forum, just wanted to see
if there was more to it. I'm actually damn proud of my left-hand for I am
well...me, just need to figure out why there's so many superstitions behind
it.

Im a hand-switching survivor
I was born left handed and my dad tried to switch me, so now i am a half
and half... i write and throw with me right hand, but eat and do makeup and
stuff with me left. whenever i try a new activity that involves using the
stronger hand it tkes me a few tries to figure out which to use
not that it really matters... im just relating to being switched over from
"the dark side"

Ambidexterity is a hell of a hard thing to pull off...me personally, I'm
your basic right hander...but due to life and events I've learned to use my
left hand just as well in certain situations. My accuracy when firing left
handed tends to go up for some reason, the left hand also tends to be one
one the directional side of a video game controller, and I when I was
younger, I used to be pretty good on the violin and viola, which demands a
certain amount of ambidexterity. I kinda' envy those who can write with
either hand though, I still haven't mastered that. It's weird, my right
hand seems to be useful for broad accuracy, while my left hand seems to be
useful for smaller scale, fine movements. >shrug< Eh, big deal
really...doesn't matter which hand...all my fingers are MAGIC!! BAHAHAHAHA!

I can write with my right hand, just isn't the same with the left so it
isn't as quick. When I was in iaijutsu three years ago, I used the sword
with both hands and practiced with both hands. On a rough hand/hand ratio,
I would give myself a 60/40...almost balanced, but obviously with a
dominant. Yeah, ambidexterity isn't that easy to pull off, but I think
it'd be a really nice thing to learn in the long run. One of my friends
can duel wield weapons, which to me, is damn awesome. Hehe...but that's how
I feel.
