How the hell do you take care of a small(body smaller than a fist, 10-inch
wingspan), brown, eastern-european bat? The biology lab just got one...the
teachers were going to use him for dissection, but they couldn't stand the
whining and pleading of hundreds of students and he became the lab's
pet...thing is, we don't really know what to feed him. Well, except
insects, but you try to catch enough flies...The animal rescue/pet shop/vet
option is out of the question...the teachers said we keep him, alive or
dead. And...where should we keep him? Right now, he's living in a jar...we
were thinking a bird cage ____________________

Your teachers ought to be turned in and FIRED for reckless endangerment of
an animal if you don't turn the creature in to a wildlife resource center.
We keep him, alive or dead?! What the FUCK kind of reasoning is that for
someone who is in charge of educating people?! First off, how did they
procure this animal for disection, because I know of NO place that sells
LIVE ANIMALS for use in disection in classrooms. What were they planning
to do, VIVISECT the poor fucking thing? And does the SCHOOL know about
this? And if it wasn't illegal, then WHY wouldn't they want veterinary or
wildlife counsel? This sounds like a load of bullshit to me, and if you
have an OUNCE of integrity to you, you'd contact the proper authorities
IMMEDIATELY. Some places have laws against harming and keeping bats and
other wildlife, and bats in many places are a protected species. Your
teachers are FUCKING ASSHOLES.
If you're going to disregard all that, go to
http://www.batworld.org
Do the right thing. Tell a rescue org about it, you can be anonymous if
you want, but this is WRONG. Flat out WRONG. ____________________ Trapped in time. Surrounded by evil. Low on gas. |

Had I been living in the U.S, that's what I'd have done. however, here in
Romania, the situation is pretty different. Wildlife resource
centers/animal rescue are things we've only heard about on Animal Planet,
and most of the vets around only treat "regular" pets or farm animals.
Anyway, we've set the little thing free, I think he'll be OK. ____________________

How dare anyone harm anything in the name of education. It is sickening
that people can just flat out disregard the moral inclinations and beliefs
of someone just so that some school children can learn about anatomy
through practical experience. I find it bad enough that they don't tailor
the carriculums of the world to each of the 6.6 billion peoples individual
wants, let alone that they irresponsibly and downright wrongly upset some
of them by doing things that they dont like.
Ummm, am I then the only other person here who has done animal body and
heart dissections? They should have fucking fired Leonardo Da Vinci's arse
for negligence and upsetting the pope a little bit when he created his
seminal sketches which became the basis of human anatomical knowledge.

people out or have satellite locations nearby.

First off, wormwood, I don't agree with using animals in classroom
disections. Because I'm one of "those people". But that's okay. Also,
they have computer programs that are every bit as educational in "practical
experience"where the student can disect everything from a frog to a human
body. What is unpractical about that?
Second of all, is it common in romania to send live animals to classrooms
to be disected? Or vivisected? Or to simply catch wildlife yourself to
bring in to cut up?
Kids don't need to cut things up to learn, and it's not "practical
experience" unless they're a) going to be surgeons or doctors, where
computer program disections of animals can take them to donated human
cadavers in med school or b)growing up to be sociopaths and go home to cut
things up in their free time so they can learn how to cut up people in
hotel rooms.
The practical experience I got in school was just fine without our teachers
catching wildlife to cut up in classrooms. Besides the fact, I dont' know
if bats are protected species in romania or not, but here, most places,
they are. Bats reproduce like humans, one baby two TOPS a year, and the
bat (if they did indeed just go catch it) could have been a female with a
pup back in the nursery, who will subsequently die without her. There is
more to education and practical experience than cutting living things open
to see how they work. I fail to see how that is practical to begin with. ____________________ Trapped in time. Surrounded by evil. Low on gas. |

Bettie and Feral>>I'm an idiot. I'd have never thought that an
out-of-my area animal rescue center would help...Sorry...
As for dissections, it's not in my profile , but the natural sciences one
*might* have them...Some years ago, it certainly was, and some people
clearly don't understand that time passes and things change. I've seen some
older textbooks and even then, the only animals dissected were frogs and
rabbits...I've never heard of bats being used in highschool dissections.
Anyway, the two teachers that came with the idea are both going to retire
this year, and the two younger ones supported us. I like to think that they
were just waaaay behind the time ____________________

happened in my family ...
Stille: not an idiot, just uninformed....
WW: we gained our knowledge of anatomy with brutal methods that were
justified at the time. Now, there are ways to trace neural pathways, blood
vessels and explore without killing a currently living thing. The practical
experience gained from cutting open an animal is negligible unless the
student is interested in medicine... Besides, these students are not making
any discoveries, as they have already been made... ____________________ The earth turns on a tilted axis - just doing the best it can.

I just figured there was some inflection or something I was missing which
would make them different.
