For as long as I can remember, I've loved it. The beauty of a piano key
tie, a clean white shirt, the fine lines of a snug black suit, and matching
pants. Maybe it was to many Rat Pack movies. Maybe I like funerals. But is
black tie out?
I got a suit about two months ago, and I absolutely love it. It cost me
about 300 bucks, which I'd say aint to shabby fora 16 year old, picked up a
sweet little tie, and I was done. But I've yet to wear it. Is it cool to
wear a suit like that to parties and get togethers? I know black tie is
hyper formal, but its the only color I can do. Is it ok to wear a suit at
all. I'm not really into the retro scene, but it seems the only crowd that
would accept it. Its not too businessy, only single breasted but no one
seems to wear suits anymore. One day I'd hope to cruise a Las Vegas casino,
scotch on the rocks in hand, loosening my french cuffs, and brushing lint
from my black lapels, but what do I do until then? ____________________ “The only thing that can alter the good writer is death.”

Wear it. If you like it, and it doesn't expose illegal body parts, just
wear it. Since when do we care if we are in vogue?
Talk to Arthegarn - wears nothing But, as I understand it! (I don't mean
no undies or anything - I don't know about that, cuz I haven't checked!)
And Arthegarn's cool! So go for it! |

I have a natural self-confidence problem, and I've alway thought the suit
made the man. Oh well. One day the fools will rise from the ashes of denim
and rayon blended khaki shorts, and know me as the true master of
Fashion!!!!! Or hate me and never invite me to parties. Its 50/50 ____________________ “The only thing that can alter the good writer is death.”

Lol... Do we want to be GQ or do we want to be STUFF Magazine? The world
will never decide. So just wait a year and it'll be in.
Not too long ago I wore a coat (with tails!) and a vest to a "shirt and
tie" event at school. Sort of a Doc Holiday look (sans moustache). I had no
problems with people not liking it. But taste differes from region to
region and man to man, so I really can't be a good indicator.
And yeah, I'd love to declare the end of khaki as well. The light brown
just doesn't go well with anything in my opinion... |

Wear it, if you want to. It has always been my theory that if it's cool to
go around drapped in fishnets and vinyl, it is übercool to wear a black tie
IF YOU KNOW HOW TO.
Now, wearing a suit is not as easy as it seems. First of all you must know
how to wear it. It involves a certain way of walking and acting, of talking
and drinking. There is nothing as uncool as a rapper in Armani. Your steps
must be slower and shorter, your back must be uptight, chest out, belly in.
As if someone was pushing you in the coxis. Dancing is another problem,
unless you are like me and limit yourself to minuets or things you can
REALLY dance. One just does not war a suit, must act the suit as well or
looks like the proverbial monkey in silk (Spanish proverbial, at least).
Oh, and don't forget to wear the right shoes (that means black) perfectly
clean and shiny.
The second thing is taking care of the suit. As Schizo says I ALWAYS wear
exactly the same clothing (when I go to the clubs, I mean, which is every
friday and saturday 22:00 til dawn or later). It should be specified that I
do not dress in black tie. I wear a black, three piece suit, black shirt
and black standard tie, not as bowtie. Check my pics (also at http://www.la-antorcha.com/usuarios/morticia/album1.html , click anywhere you read "Cultura Gotica" ). Suits have a very bad
tendency to get dirty, but most specially to take on smells. After one
night I must put my suit in the terrace for 12 hours so the smell goes away
(mostly), and once in 3 months have it dry cleaned. Also be specially
careful about where do you lean, specifically in wet bars. And make sure
taking all these precautions won't spoil your fun. And use a REAL bowtie.
If you can do that and still feel comfortable and natural, you have taken
your first step into a cool world...

PS: My crushing Schizo: whenever you want to know for certain, just give me
a call... We'll spend a long time debating about theology and underwear.
Paraphrasing Eco... Was Jesus, or wasn't he, owner of the underwear he
wore? |

Arthegarn, you DOLL!!! The MINUET!!! I swear I'm in love! Why can't
there be two of me - one to stay here with my family, and one to run off to
Europe and dance the minuet with you? (not that I know how, but I'm sure
you can teach me!)
Did Jesus wear underwear? Was that an accepted practice in that time
period and region? Or did they just wear those nifty robes, and be really
careful on the swingset? |

Why can't men just wear loin cloths and submit? *shrugs* I suppose if they
can't do that, then a black suit and tie would be about the next best
thing. When a man wears a suit well, he can look breathtaking. ____________________ "When choosing between two evils, I always like to try the one I've never

Although I know I'm not one of the worlds leading fashion experts (Gebus,
far from it) my advice is that it all depends on the situation. For me if
I'm going somewhere that’s going to be fairly formal then I need to dress
down. Nothing tacky, but just enough to make you noticeable. Of course for
those semi formal occasions its time to go all out |

Oh well, I'm really going to have to take that suit out and wear it. Its
been collecting way to much dust. I have this penchant for creating little
theme outfits, too. Like I have an 80's outfit: royal purple dress shirt,
no tie, top button open, black coat, sleeves rolled up to elbow, black
pants, and Italian loafers with no socks. I also have my Fear and Loathing
outfit: White tennis shoes, light khaki short, red hawaiian shirt, fishing
hat, big rimmed yellow glasses, cigarette holder. I'm pretty sure my
friends hate me because I'm over dressed for stuff, but thats their loss. ____________________ “The only thing that can alter the good writer is death.”
