Its that time of my life when i unfortunately have to decide whether to go
to college..or not...Unlike for some people, this is an extremely hard
choice for me because i dont know where to go in life, and dont know if i
will go anywhere at all. My parents push me to go....but i dont think i can
handle 4 more years of school. I have about 2 years to decide..which i
think is plenty of time, but theyre going quick, much quicker than i
expected. I'd like to hear some of your stories when you had to decide,
what made you choose what you did, and what happened beyond that point. I
want to have a good job and support myself, but i want to do something that
i like. (P.S. im a very lazy person LOL) Thanks Shmeng ^.^
First off, get your ass into "running start" or whatever they call it in
your area. You start community college in highschool, take your highschool
credits AT COLLEGE. You can either go half highschool half college, or
quit highschool all together. You get a diploma, not a GED, and if you're
smart and start early enough you can GRADUATE EARLY. Plus ALL those
credits you get for the classes you take rack up as COLLEGE credits as well
as credits towards your diploma. Granted, it's a tad more heavy, and you
do have to pay for books and such, but it's a good way to get a year or two
of college credits without paying tuition. Plus you can eyeball the other
classes you can take, and they have REAL career counselors to take your
interests and turn them into an education and suggestions for careers.
I love running start. It was the best thing that ever happened to me. I
got out of highschool early, graduated early, and was finally able to
interact with strangers in a TRUE education environment. Where you're
treated like an ADULT, even if you're still technically in highschool.
Where when you speak in class people LISTEN.
Unfortunately I discovered that college wasn't my thing. I wasn't going
anywhere with it, and hell, it was either school or work and work made me
money...school COST it. I sometimes regret dropping out, but I have a
decent job (if retail can be called decent...I'm SO going to look into
nordstrom's MAC cosmetic counter...they REALLY make some serious moolah).
Someday when I decide what it is I TRULY want to do, I'll go back somehow,
but at the point in time when I made the decision to not go anymore it was
for the best.

Well..heh..
I dropped out of high school and joined the Navy, BUT! in Boot Camp i got
my GED, and when i got to my first Command i turned my GED in and got a HS
Diploma from some school in BFE. Now im taking college courses here in
Okinawa and im almost finished with my General Education courses. And when
i get out i will go to school for 2 more years, get my Telecommunications
Degree and ill be set for life....but remember, ill be 28 1/2 years old
when im done. So my advice to you is go to collage and just get it over
with, get a degree in something that you can enjoy for a time being and
then while making money and getting out in the world find something you
like to do and go with it.
My best advice to is "Don't Sweat the Small Stuff"

I'm in the same boat as you, Gothic. Not quite sure what I'm going to do...
Wish I could have taken Bettie X's idea, but it never really solidified
when I talked with my parents about it.
So my personal plan is to run off to Oregon, Corvallis, specifically. Find
some kind of job up there and get into community college and work on my
general education. Then transfer into the university since by then I'd have
resident status.
So just go to a community college and get the crappy subjects done with.
During that time you can play around with career ideas some more (cheaper
than a uni) until you know what you want.
Oh, and about lazy... You're looking at the king of "high potential"...

I wish I could go to college now. When I got out of High School, I went
straight to the itsy bitsy teeny weeny Bible school that my parents and
grandparents, etc. went to before me. That took 3 years. After that, I
toyed with the idea of college, but it never happened. Now I have a
family, which makes the idea of college that much harder. I have little
enough time for the necessities as it is.
But I WILL go to college someday. I've promised it to myself. And when I
do, I can tell you that I will appreciate it far more than all those people
whose parents sent them to college right out of High School as a matter of
course.
You want to know something? I still am not sure what I'd like to major in,
and I'm 26! Probably languages... I don't know.
