I find it very interesting, on how people instantly move away from you, or
become "overly religious" when they see you wearing anything doing with
skulls. The religious community almost considers my wearing of a cross of
skulls as blasphamy, and love the outfits I have, until they see the skulls
on the shirt....
And so, I ask, does anyone know why skulls have now become akin to evil?
The automatic assumption that if you have anything to do with skulls,
you´re also into satanism or witchcraft? Granted of course, I have no
problems with people´s reactions, and find it quite enjoyable to see how
they try to compose themselves

My son,
I´m not touching that with a 60 foot pole.
Try pink pom poms.

Well most of them might have a problem with that because it´s a sign of
death, and death is scary, and since it´s scary it´s bad.
I wear skull stuff all the time. I have little hair sticks with a skull on
the end of each...I have a shirt with one on it and "rotten little girl" in
old english over it...I have a LOT of skull stuff, and nobody´s EVER bugged
me about it.
Ever.
Don´t know why they´d make a point to bother you about it.

The people that are giving me probs about it, are those at my office (all
of which are highly religious, and also old enough to be my parents).
There are a few who like the skulls, but they also are very open minded
about things. I guess it really has to deal with the person´s view of the
world, and how sure they are of themselves and their beliefs. I have found
no problem with those who are strong in their beliefs - Strange hm?

I´m going out on a limb here, but it might have something to do with the
fact that all the skull iconography in western culture represents something
to be wary of (viz. skull and crossbones as icon of piracy, eventually
shifting to represent poison, the skull insignia of the shuetzstoffel, the
secret "Skull and Bones Society", et cetera). It has come to be deeply
internalised as a symbol of impending danger. The question is really: What
does it mean to you? You are, after all, the one wearing the things. I´m
presuming that it is precisely for the reaction that it gets.

If the problems are popping up at the office, are you supposed to be
dressed better. I could be wrong, but if they are wearing buttoned
collared shirts or even suits, and you have on a t-shirt that is covered
with skulls, you might not fit in with the unofficial dress code.

i personally like the skull and cross bone look. arrrr! shiver me timbers
and the like. but really. people act weird around anything that isnt the
norm. now persay if brittney spears came out on stage with a skull on her
tight little cleavage wrap she calls a shirt... every lil teeny
bopper/kiddy winky would be walking around with that on. sick isnt it?
i have three shirts with skulls and even shoes with skulls on them, and i
wear them proudly.. you should too.

Well, I´m Catholic, but I see nothing wrong with skulls and neither do my
Catholic friends. Skulls are even on Rosaries (something the Catholics pray
with), they represent the sign of mortality and are highly reverred.. :-P

BITE MEH!!!! MaRiA
Too true, good idea to bring that up.
Thank you also Xaos for breaching the "well, are you in business attire?"
bit...I was in a rather unconfrontational mood and didn´t wanna be a bitch
for onece*gasp*. You probably said it better than I would have anyway in
my usual mood
If its an office, and you are supposed to be in business professional
attire, I doubt skulls fit into that clothing criteria, unless it´s
something small and inobtrusive like a ring or a bracelette or something.
My husband´s work has a loose "business casual" dresscode, and I"ve bought
him a shirt with skull cadilac buttons (a little skull with the caddy V
beneath it) and a few workshirts that have one or two...Okay, one is a
black button up work shirt with a big skull, pistons, dice and black cats
on the back, but nobody seems to have an issue with it. Of course it´s
shirt and tie when the coprorates come through, but day to day as long as
it´s in basic good taste it´s cool.
It´s funny...at my work we´re encouraged to get our freak on clothing wise
when the big heads come through *snicker*
I´m such a lucky retail diva

Skulls to me are comforting, they bring me a sort of solace, if you will.
The skull jewelry decorating my room, necklaces that I have, shirts with a
skull or two on them, to me, just attracted me to them. I love their
design, the feel, there’s simply something so basic and beautiful about
them.
A skull and a rose go hand in hand, no? A red skull, a grey rose...
As Monolycus
has covered before, religious bigots and the ignorant will immediately
conceive skulls as a “sign of Satan, evil, death” etc. It’s just a
stereotype that society has attached to them over time with the rest of our
art...well, a good portion of society has atleast.

i think its because we wear black with tthem and alot of them sometimes and
stuff.. and about how hell is "full of skulls " or whatever.. you get the
idea?
Or it could be that they just don´t understand/like your taste in
fashion.
nothing new.
you´ll live.

Probably since...forever....Its possibly because skulls represent death.
And people are usually frightened by death. I dont really get it....

Not only death does it inscribe but also poison on random bottles. True the
death term may be the most akin the the response you are recieving from
your office mates. However, there is a time and place for everything, and
as aforementioned, unless you are working in an ultraliberal store where
all of the products being sold are akin to what you are wearing, you
probably shouldn't alienate yourself so much as to violate a dress code to
a job that you probably need to pay rent.... Example: If you worked at
mcdonalds... would you not be wearing the green shirt, pants and funny hat?
although, it is barely above minimum wage and a shit job, if it is not
ultra-liberal and understanding. Be careful to secure at leat the short
term future of your income.

It's never really become a symbol of "evil," necessarily, but rather it
stems from the psychology that the human mind relates to anything grim or
morbid. I mean, I admit that I live in an overtly-Christian area, and they
all used to think I was a blasphemy in my own right, but now that I've been
here for a few years, they've learned about me and have just sucked it up.
I guess it's also come to mean a symbol of danger or violence in our
society. But enough of my rambling, I'll open the floor to someone else...
