Hello everyone...
I know I've been absent for a time, but I wanted to know if anybody plays
bass guitar?I decided to finally take it up after some time of
contemplation. So if anyone has tips for a beginner I would really
appreciate them. Thanks
I just had to come back I missed you people.. |

I'm glad you
say that because I have been listening to the bass of my favorite bands
since that is the only thing I can do at the moment(since I dont have a
bass at the moment) and :writes down: must experiment with bass |

Well, I've been playing bass for aaages, have a couple of releases out and
a lot of gigs _and_ I still think I'm a rather lousy bass player. However
I reckon I am a COOL bass player, which is exactly what I want to be... I
like the sound and the groove of what I do, and that is more than
enough.
In other words, you might not want to listen to my advice, but do as you
like...
In the beginning... I formed a band with some other girls who wanted to
play, and we got a rehersal studio, end we started... Less than a year
later we had a record deal, but that's another story. I wanted my bass to
sound like the bass from ooold Cure and Joy Division, so I got a good
chorus effect box. The first year I did LOTS of scale rehersing (if that
is what it is called...)
After a couple of years I bought a really cool 5-string bass, and expanded.
Unfortunately it was stolen, and I couldn't afford another like that, even
if it had been possible to find another... (Gibson Les Paul 5 string
basses, they were only a couple of them )
But I had fallen in love with the deeeeep drone of the 5-string, so what I
do now is I string my 4-string with the four thickest strings from a
5-string string set, and tune it down to ADAD. Wicked...
Best advice: Listen to the bass from your favourite band. Get/form a band.
-Buy a tiny amplifier for home rehersal, a metronome (if that's what it's
called in english...) and a chorus for band rehersal.
Good luck ____________________ All stressed out and no one to choke...

well, all the instruments I play I taught myself (which is why I suck) to
play. Fortunatly, bass is one of the easiest instruments to play. I've
found the best way to learn to play any instrument is to play music yoo
enjoy and know well enough and try playing along with it. Be careful
though, because it's very popular these days to play bass tuned to D rather
than E, 5-string bass, etc. So more classical rock is better to play along
with.
For this reason I must reccomend trying to play along with Black Sabbath.
All of Sabbath's songs are constructed in similar ways and (with the
exceptions of the solos) are VERY easy to play. Anyway, Geezer Butler is
one of the greatest bassists ever (although Les Claypool is the GOD of
bass). ____________________
