The sick thing is that they dont charge less. they just say they do.
according to some pending class action suits, they are going to get to pay
buckets for this illegal practice.
They have one price on the wall, say the sale price, and the 'old' price,
then the computer at the register has a third price in it that is higher
than the starting price and often as much as 30% higher than the so called
sales price.
Per customer it is usually only a few dollars a visit, but if you multiply
that by the thousands that shop there everyday and the 100's of locations,
its becomes a relaly big number really fast for them.
I am soo waiting for the law suits. *wants to see them grovel for theft
from the 'Merikan People, thier neighbors.*
I mean think about it, someone goes there because they think they are going
to save say 5 dollars, and instead they pay 5 dollars more. that is 10
bucks to their mental wallet. and since many people arent good enough at
math to be able to see that they are being gouged, wal-mart gets an extra 5
bucks, the buyer gets to feel dumber and hate the govt for the high taxes
(since many people blame the different between what they thought they were
going to pay and what they do pay on sale tax), and the rest of us get to
see people walking around in cheap, disposable clothes that fit badly, have
harsh toxic dyes in them, and, in the case of shoes, damage thier feet.
All the sickness that comes from thier "savings" comes out of the money the
rest of us pay for healthcare and income taxes. yay walmart! get everyone
to pay for your crimes for you!

Yay for walmart!
I was so glad to see that the hippies on TV during the WTO riots had their
demon walmart signs up. Hippies know where it's AT.
What I don't understand is that if people want inexpensive clothing, there
are chains like TJ MAX and Ross that are pretty much wholesale
clothing/housewares stores, where they buy surplus and clothes from
companies going out of biz or "imperfect" garments (that have nothing wrong
but perhaps a seam that isn't perfectly straight or whatnot) and they
advertise ON THE PRODUCT that it's "imperfect", and return sell them at
cheap ass prices. Sure you have to dig for the good stuff, but it's worth
it.
I figure that one of these days we will finally see walmart fall. I don't
think it's going to be easy, and I know it's going to be ugly, but I shall
dance when they do.
And for the record, I am one of those obsessive types that checks my
reciepts and watches the cashier when I buy stuff. *I* do register work
all the time, and *I* screw up on occasion, so goofup that is
understandable or sleazeball cheating usually does not get by me. I even
watched several news reports on big chain grocery stores where the price in
the computer was WAY diff from the price on the shelf due to computer error
or company sneakiness. I once had a girl ring me up for veggie broth
($0.75) that came up to $7 a CAN on my reciept! She didn't even notice,
but I DID, and told her that unless the shit got me HIGH she made a BIG BOO
BOO.
Regardless of the company it is ALWAYS buyer-be-ware, and you always have
to be on the lookout for goofups or dirty pool. Walmart just seems to have
perfected the game. ____________________ Trapped in time. Surrounded by evil. Low on gas. |

OK , so Wal-Mart pays shit for retail, whoopifreakingdoo
It's retail, if you are trying to raise a family on a cashiers wages, then
I'm sorry, you either need to loose the family or find a better job.
People have been doing it for years, either working two jobs or finding
better paying jobs. If enough people leave, then Wal-Mart, will either go
out of business or raise their wages. But instead people would rather stay
there and complain, I say oh well, sit in your hell of a job and take the
shit they give you, it's all you deserve.
I lived in a reletively small town, and all the new walmart managed to do
was put the already out of comission K-mart into the toilet(although it's
still there and open for business) There are several mom and pop stores
still there, and they are not in any fear of being pushed out of business
any time soon.
And as for the life insurance thing, remember, it was only illegal in
Texas. The rest of the country will let you do it. Shit, if I had a large
corporation, I'd put a policy on all of my employees. First, I have to
train them, so if they die before I can get what I put into their training,
I'm screwed, after than, if they die on the job, I want extra money for
what ever court cases are about to come in. Or if they die elsewheres, I
have to pay to interview people for what ever position that now needs
filled. ____________________ Sometimes I dream about dinosaurs shopping for cargo shorts at the Gap.

Wal-Mart might not spread like an evil blanket of endless death. I'm
thinking there is a chance it might pull an Enron. ____________________ The OBOLISK is Divine. |

No see to pull an Enron they would have to be NOT making a profit and
falsifying their stock reports so that they've built up an insurmountable
debt/vs what they actually have. Walmart makes way too much money to do
that. They have no reason to falsify their earnings reports, they're
fuckin rich. ____________________ Trapped in time. Surrounded by evil. Low on gas. |

OH, and xaos....
I can agree with you that you should not be making mucho denero as a
cashier. Entry level = entry pay, unfortunately people don't seem to see
things that way. In our state min wage is now $7 an hour and people STILL
bitch about how LOW it is! Well, uhm, excuse me, I was an assistant
manager for spencer gifts FOUR YEARS ago making $6 an HOUR. and THAT was
management. When I started, I was making about $4.88, when I was promoted
to supervisor I made a whopping $5.50. And these people are bitching
about getting $7 an hour to FOLD T SHIRTS. ANYWAY, if you hate working at
walmart and aren't making enough money, then yes get a second job or a
better one.
ONE more thing about the retail industry. It is not time intensive to
interview or train a cashier. Large corporate companies like Walmart have
people specificially for the purpose of sorting through applications,
recruiting, hiring, and training. Large companies also have regular
employee turnover and so it's an ongoing process, and everyone, yes
everyone is EXPENDABLE so the hiring/training process is no more expensive
nor time intensive than it usually is as it's an ongoing process. They
don't need to cover their losses if an employee dies, they'll simply refill
the position with another body that can push buttons and make change. To
them it's no big deal, they never see the faces of these actual people,
they're just files in the HR computer.
THE PROBLEM with specifically hiring and taking out life insurance policies
on the elderly without their knowledge or consent for the benifit of nobody
but the company profit margin is disgusting, as they see them even LESS as
employees or people and more like a way to make a quick buck of someone
that is going to die sooner rather than later, and for them the sooner the
better. Most of these elderly people are there sometimes for just
something to do, sometimes to suppliment their weak medicare coverage or
are on a fixed income that just isn't enough to make ends meet. They see a
company that advertises competitive pay, a friendly happy enviroment, good
medical coverage, and in turn the CEO is brimng them onboard and greedily
rubbing his hands thinking of the extra few bucks he'll gain when/if that
elderly person kicks off.
Compare that with the price tag fraud, seeking out merchandise that was
made under questionable working conditions (because it's always cheaper
from a sweatshop, isn't that right kathy lee?), and the fact that just
being IN a walmart makes my skin crawl, and you have one big bad business
and it STINKS.
SO what do I do about it? I won't work for them, I don't buy from them. I
don't set foot on their property, I don't encourage others to shop there.
I don't give them my business which is about all I can really do, but at
least I"m doing my part in not supporting, what is to me, a disgusting,
cheating, lying and filthy megacorporation. All I can do is sit back and
hope they burn themselves to the ground someday, and be pleased that I
never gave them my business. ____________________ Trapped in time. Surrounded by evil. Low on gas. |

The thing I find interesting about sweat shops is that, while they would be
horrible in America, in other countries, they are the working norm at
times.
I read an article about a place where they sewed nike shoes together. By
American standards, the place sucked, but compared to the conditions of
other places in the area, the locals were glad that Nike was there.
Because Nike paid them as much as 8 times more than the local musinesses,
these people were able to save more money and send their kids off to
school. ____________________ Sometimes I dream about dinosaurs shopping for cargo shorts at the Gap.
