The thing I find interesting about sweat shops is that, while they would be horrible in America, in other countries, they are the working norm at times.

I read an article about a place where they sewed nike shoes together. By American standards, the place sucked, but compared to the conditions of other places in the area, the locals were glad that Nike was there. Because Nike paid them as much as 8 times more than the local musinesses, these people were able to save more money and send their kids off to school.

OH, and xaos....

I can agree with you that you should not be making mucho denero as a cashier. Entry level = entry pay, unfortunately people don't seem to see things that way. In our state min wage is now $7 an hour and people STILL bitch about how LOW it is! Well, uhm, excuse me, I was an assistant manager for spencer gifts FOUR YEARS ago making $6 an HOUR. and THAT was management. When I started, I was making about $4.88, when I was promoted to supervisor I made a whopping $5.50. And these people are bitching about getting $7 an hour to FOLD T SHIRTS. ANYWAY, if you hate working at walmart and aren't making enough money, then yes get a second job or a better one.
ONE more thing about the retail industry. It is not time intensive to interview or train a cashier. Large corporate companies like Walmart have people specificially for the purpose of sorting through applications, recruiting, hiring, and training. Large companies also have regular employee turnover and so it's an ongoing process, and everyone, yes everyone is EXPENDABLE so the hiring/training process is no more expensive nor time intensive than it usually is as it's an ongoing process. They don't need to cover their losses if an employee dies, they'll simply refill the position with another body that can push buttons and make change. To them it's no big deal, they never see the faces of these actual people, they're just files in the HR computer.
THE PROBLEM with specifically hiring and taking out life insurance policies on the elderly without their knowledge or consent for the benifit of nobody but the company profit margin is disgusting, as they see them even LESS as employees or people and more like a way to make a quick buck of someone that is going to die sooner rather than later, and for them the sooner the better. Most of these elderly people are there sometimes for just something to do, sometimes to suppliment their weak medicare coverage or are on a fixed income that just isn't enough to make ends meet. They see a company that advertises competitive pay, a friendly happy enviroment, good medical coverage, and in turn the CEO is brimng them onboard and greedily rubbing his hands thinking of the extra few bucks he'll gain when/if that elderly person kicks off.
Compare that with the price tag fraud, seeking out merchandise that was made under questionable working conditions (because it's always cheaper from a sweatshop, isn't that right kathy lee?), and the fact that just being IN a walmart makes my skin crawl, and you have one big bad business and it STINKS.
SO what do I do about it? I won't work for them, I don't buy from them. I don't set foot on their property, I don't encourage others to shop there. I don't give them my business which is about all I can really do, but at least I"m doing my part in not supporting, what is to me, a disgusting, cheating, lying and filthy megacorporation. All I can do is sit back and hope they burn themselves to the ground someday, and be pleased that I never gave them my business.

No see to pull an Enron they would have to be NOT making a profit and falsifying their stock reports so that they've built up an insurmountable debt/vs what they actually have. Walmart makes way too much money to do that. They have no reason to falsify their earnings reports, they're fuckin rich.

Wal-Mart might not spread like an evil blanket of endless death. I'm thinking there is a chance it might pull an Enron.

OK , so Wal-Mart pays shit for retail, whoopifreakingdoo

It's retail, if you are trying to raise a family on a cashiers wages, then I'm sorry, you either need to loose the family or find a better job. People have been doing it for years, either working two jobs or finding better paying jobs. If enough people leave, then Wal-Mart, will either go out of business or raise their wages. But instead people would rather stay there and complain, I say oh well, sit in your hell of a job and take the shit they give you, it's all you deserve.

I lived in a reletively small town, and all the new walmart managed to do was put the already out of comission K-mart into the toilet(although it's still there and open for business) There are several mom and pop stores still there, and they are not in any fear of being pushed out of business any time soon.

And as for the life insurance thing, remember, it was only illegal in Texas. The rest of the country will let you do it. Shit, if I had a large corporation, I'd put a policy on all of my employees. First, I have to train them, so if they die before I can get what I put into their training, I'm screwed, after than, if they die on the job, I want extra money for what ever court cases are about to come in. Or if they die elsewheres, I have to pay to interview people for what ever position that now needs filled.

Yay for walmart!

I was so glad to see that the hippies on TV during the WTO riots had their demon walmart signs up. Hippies know where it's AT.
What I don't understand is that if people want inexpensive clothing, there are chains like TJ MAX and Ross that are pretty much wholesale clothing/housewares stores, where they buy surplus and clothes from companies going out of biz or "imperfect" garments (that have nothing wrong but perhaps a seam that isn't perfectly straight or whatnot) and they advertise ON THE PRODUCT that it's "imperfect", and return sell them at cheap ass prices. Sure you have to dig for the good stuff, but it's worth it.

I figure that one of these days we will finally see walmart fall. I don't think it's going to be easy, and I know it's going to be ugly, but I shall dance when they do.

And for the record, I am one of those obsessive types that checks my reciepts and watches the cashier when I buy stuff. *I* do register work all the time, and *I* screw up on occasion, so goofup that is understandable or sleazeball cheating usually does not get by me. I even watched several news reports on big chain grocery stores where the price in the computer was WAY diff from the price on the shelf due to computer error or company sneakiness. I once had a girl ring me up for veggie broth ($0.75) that came up to $7 a CAN on my reciept! She didn't even notice, but I DID, and told her that unless the shit got me HIGH she made a BIG BOO BOO.
Regardless of the company it is ALWAYS buyer-be-ware, and you always have to be on the lookout for goofups or dirty pool. Walmart just seems to have perfected the game.

The sick thing is that they dont charge less. they just say they do. according to some pending class action suits, they are going to get to pay buckets for this illegal practice.
They have one price on the wall, say the sale price, and the 'old' price, then the computer at the register has a third price in it that is higher than the starting price and often as much as 30% higher than the so called sales price.
Per customer it is usually only a few dollars a visit, but if you multiply that by the thousands that shop there everyday and the 100's of locations, its becomes a relaly big number really fast for them.
I am soo waiting for the law suits. *wants to see them grovel for theft from the 'Merikan People, thier neighbors.*
I mean think about it, someone goes there because they think they are going to save say 5 dollars, and instead they pay 5 dollars more. that is 10 bucks to their mental wallet. and since many people arent good enough at math to be able to see that they are being gouged, wal-mart gets an extra 5 bucks, the buyer gets to feel dumber and hate the govt for the high taxes (since many people blame the different between what they thought they were going to pay and what they do pay on sale tax), and the rest of us get to see people walking around in cheap, disposable clothes that fit badly, have harsh toxic dyes in them, and, in the case of shoes, damage thier feet.
All the sickness that comes from thier "savings" comes out of the money the rest of us pay for healthcare and income taxes. yay walmart! get everyone to pay for your crimes for you!

The problem with a wal-mart boycot is that red necks primarly shop at wal-mart. Try convenceing a red neck that he sould not shop at wal-mart. You will run away screaming. I am not man enough for that. I am not saying every one that shops at wal-mart is a red neck. But if you remove them from wal-marts consumers you have hit there bank account hard.

oh wait, that's real life... *is scared*

I agree with Stic. We should boycott. Only trouble is getting enough numbers convinced. A lot of people won't want to pay higher prices at the competitor's store, even though its worth it.

I only just discovered that we have Walmarts here in England, but they are known as Asda. Do Americans also have to put up with that creepy giant yellow face?

http://www.rotten.com/library/crime/corporate/wal-mart/
Everything from clothes, to sports gear, to tires, and pets can be bought at Wal-Mart at very cheap prices. They don't have to necessarily offer a superior product to their competitors, just a cheaper, more convenient one. In doing this, small business suffer or blink out. The local boutique, sports supply store, the mechanic, and pet store all go out of business because they just can’t offer a better price and lose business in the glamour and convenience of a super Wal-Mart. What happens to those workers then? They go get a job at Wal-Mart. Minimum wage unless you work there for 20+years, and no health benefits. Now this wouldn’t be that devastating to large cities, because the amount of people in the area actually shelter the impact of Wal-Mart due to supply and demand, and the population. People can afford to shop else where too. But there are several small country towns that have nothing but a Wal-Mart. No other businesses exist in these places. Everyone works there and buys there. Full dependency.
Wal-Mart is definitely a problem. The way the corporation behaves is hard to manage. It first off sells everything. This is a gigantic problem- reasons being is that other companies cannot survive due to competition. And another thing due to that problem is that it isn’t a true monopoly, thus the government cannot intervene without making new laws. If it only sold just tires, or just sporting goods, and had its same success, the government would slap regulation on it fast. As of right now, there is little anyone can do to control Wal-Mart or regulate it, or tame its expansion. Imagine if there was no other place to buy things or work at other than Wal-Mart. It’s happening in some small towns today. That’s a frightening idea.
It gets worse. Wal-Mart is a very conservative corporation. It censors all CDs in its music section. It does not sell CDs with offensive language. Even if you are an adult, and you want to listen to Lil’ Kim’s Hardcore album, it is either not there, or watered down and censored. Shouldn’t you have the right to buy a CD with offensive language if you want to? Wal-Mart doesn’t think so. Of course you can just take your business somewhere else- unless you live in one of those unfortunate small towns who’s record store went out of business. Sure people can always go online and find their CDs, but in the name of convenience they might just buckle down and go to Wal-Mart. That’s your rights down the tube.
Second in the “It gets worse list” Wal-Mart is very, how shall we say- ‘Anti- Female‘. If you have a prescription for birth control or RU486, and it’s you goddamned right to purchase it via Roe v. Wade- you should keep in mind that Wal-Mart refuses to hold or sell certain contraceptive drugs at its pharmacy. So if you live in that small country town, you either have to get in you car and go somewhere else (if you can afford the gas money on your barely 18k a year salary), or shut up and have the kid like women are 'supposed' to. What gives a corporation the right to regulate people like this?
Also, their staff is 75% women, but men hold 66% of the high ranking positions. And Last time I checked there were no female district managers.
Wal-Mart could set a national trend for low wages (18k, and if you want health care it‘s $3,000, plus a deductible- therefore you cannot afford it), dependency on it’s business, a undereducated low training work force may dominate the new employment trend, and it can regulate your activity through censorship and refusing to give out contraceptives because the CEOs are pro-life, and put women back a century. Not to mention they may give you a decent pay raise after working there for decades, but remember, they might have an insurance policy on your head as to make profit from your death.
The bush administration is not one to kindly regulate such brewing monsters of the corporate world. And with the growing governmental power of corporations, any legislation or legal action against them could not be around for a long time; perhaps after people suffer enough to effect votes.
What’s the current solution? Fucking Boycott.

I am a huge, fucking hypocrite.

I shop at WalMart. While I read these posts and links, and am justly horrified by the facts I find, I still plan to shop at WalMart.

Because, no matter how horrible their policies, WalMart sells the cheapest diapers, and cheapest just about anything else I can find around here. They have the biggest selection, and they're located very conveniently for me with my busy schedule.

If I had the choice, (in other words, if I had the money), I would shop elsewhere. I would far rather buy an entertainment center made of real wood instead of laminated particle board, made by local craftsmen, and pay a fair price. But I can't.

I look around my apartment and see other things besides the entertainment center that came from WalMart - the corkboard, the whiteboard, the lamp, the pillar candles, the phone, the computer desk, the PlayStation, the baby's high chair, and if I opened the cupboards and closets, I would find even more stuff.

Perhaps this is part of WalMart's scheme - pay shit, so people have shit to spend. Then they'll have to shop at WalMart because that's all they can afford. All the companies in the area follow WalMart's pay example. So all their employees have to shop at WalMart, too. So WalMart gets more money from more sales, and retains more by paying their employees less. So they have the funds to open a new WalMart in another area. So the cycle starts all over again.

WalMart has its chains around poor America, and I am indignant, the more so because they have their chains around me as well!
