Shmeng of the Week: I am allergic to work! |

No, really! I mean it! I AM allergic to work! The doctor said so!
Last weekend, I came down with a nasty rash. And by nasty, I mean REALLY nasty. Little red bubbles all over my hands, and my forearms, and a little on my neck and face. Itchy as hell, and twice as ugly.
Today I went into work and showed my friend, hoping for some sympathy. I got the sympathy, and some advice - go to the company nurse. So I got permission from my supervisor and did.
Well, the nurse didn't like the look of my sores. She seemed to think that it was work-related, but wasn't sure. So she called up the hospital, and wangled an immediate appointment for a "young woman with a horrendous rash!"
When I say immediate, I mean immediate. Ten minutes later, I was in the doctors office. And I received my verdict. The oils that cover everything, and I mean EVERYTHING in my workplace, were causing an allergic reaction in my skin, similar to poison ivy! So now I have to wear gloves, and try to remember not to scratch my nose, or tuck my hair inside my hairnet, without first removing my gloves. Hooray. It is DAMN HARD to pick up itsy bitsy balls and put them in teeny tiny bearings, while wearing gloves! And my hair is ALWAYS falling out of my hairnet!
Lucky for me, my company is covering the doctors bills. But it will take anywhere from several days to several weeks for my rash to go bye-bye. Until then, I get to look and feel like a leper. I hate my skin. I want to peel it off.
But at least I get to say in truth, that I am allergic to work!

"That really sucks" should go without saying here. I hope that you mend quickly and that this reaction doesn't recur.

Well if there is a bright side it's that if yoo ever have yoo can probably use the lawsuit threat and get away with it. I'm sure given the scenario they'll sttle out of court very quickly. But damn, that's one hell of a bitch!

Half of me wants to quit and find a different job. I mean, this is ridiculous! And I won't know until my rash heals (or not for an age if it doesn't) if wearing gloves is enough protection.
But if I get another job now, then I have to wait 3 months rather than 1.5 to get health insurance. And obviously, I need insurance. So I'm sticking it out for now.

No fun! I never had problems that bad at work. Makes me feel like a dork for complaining about the massive dust bunnies the machines used to hurl at me.

well it's nice of them to cover the bill...at least they take care of their employees!
Perhaps if you got some better fitting gloves? I used to have to pierce ears at work, and all we had were giant man sized rubber gloves (that had about a half an inch of room at the fingertips, once which resulted in my piercing the tip of the glove to the person's ear) so I went and got little girl size gloves and they were great!
Medical is a good thing to have, but you should check into seeing if DSHS would be able to cover you in the short waiting period for your benifits to kick in at another job.
Man you poor baby and your blisters :( My boss actually was so stressed out at work one time he woke up the next day with hives. *snicker* I felt so bad for him *lol* no really, I did.
I found out after the fact that the reason I used to get such awful migranes at work was because our ventilation system in our small size store somehow was picking up the fumes from the grill of a burger joint in the food court in the mall. The store always reeked like burnt meat which was bad enough, but it was actually makin my brain explode.
Some other jobs have more readilly available benifits, but most of them have the 90 day waiting period. But hey, if you can get DSHS to cover you then I'd start searching.

Yeah the chemicals I use at my work give me a red rash, but it looks more like "blood bubbles" underneath my skin...not on top...........it only does it when i use a combination of two of the many chemicals we have.....but those two I still don't know! Anyways I have sympathy for you b/c I know what it's like .......I work in Taco Hell.....I mean Bell.......anyways........Hope you get better , and sorry 'bout the gloves....ICK !
