Preach: Patchouli |
Posted by
Shade on Thursday, April 03, 2003 - 12:02 AM PST
Patchouli, who thought this, was a good idea? I want to find him, kick his ass, and then drown him in a vat of the stuff. Except I couldn't stand to get near him for the stench. Since the mid-eighties some olfactory terrorists have been replacing the bath with the patchouli bottle, first it was a light brushing of oil behind the ears to lend that delightfully earthy, moldering human flesh scent to the air around them. Now this may sound delightfully goth to those of you who have never smelled this evil scent before, but let me assure you it is not.
The smell of patchouli is like that of nothing on this earth. It smells like one would imagine rot and corruption to smell on a hot day. The worst part is that it is usually ladled on in the hope it will cover up the scent of human decay. Most of the worst offenders I have had the misfortune to come within a few city blocks of have poured it over their heads rather than shower and remove the days old sweat and dead skin cells that are causing such an unpleasant undertone to the already nasty oil scent you just want to leave the state and nuke it from a foreign country.
Patchouli, an East Indian mint, has a musty fragrance and is found in many perfumes. This is not a valid argument for making it it's own scent, do you know what else is vital to the creation of most perfumes? Ambergris. Ambergris is used as a base note and fixative in perfumery. Do you know what Ambergris is? It's sperm whale vomit, it's the lining of their intestinal tract, it's the rubbery crap that is supposed to keep their stomachs from getting torn up by the beaks of squid. Go ahead, rub yourself in that you bloody hippie, I dare you.

I never could figure out, when someone wandered past me wafting that particular smell, if it were just weeks of unwashed body odor or patchouli. I still don't know what just patchouli smells like when not mixed with unbathed human...

Actually, I rather like the smell of the stuff, when in small amounts and not being used to hide the fact that someone is unbathed.
And actual ambergris based perfumes are getting harder and harder to find. Companies are finding the synthetic stuff cheaper, easier to get, and more effective.

Well in San Fran it's so common that yoo forget yoo can even smell it after 2 days! I find that it is used less because of it's ability to cover BO (they're hippies afterall, not the French) and moreso because of it's ability to seemingly "nutralize" the scent of marijuana. If yoo dislike this smell I strongly suggest avoiding the Bay area especially Haight street as well as Telegraph.
I must however compliment yoo though on the passionate article! And thanks for the shout out, but yoo know I'm on a stricktly human diet (meaning I eat people, not the things people eat) ever since PETA got on my ass.

Re: Patchouli by callei on Apr 03, 2003 - 01:47 PM (User info | Send a Message) http:// | Yah, in spring/winter its not so bad. Wait til summer at the park or the hill and see if youe nose will still go dead just from the patcholi...
I grew up there and I still have nightmares about the giant smelly patchouli bellbottoms chasing me. And dont get me started on the Brikenstocks!
And just in case anyone here actually thinks that smell "nutralizes" the smell of pot, it doesnt. It just makes you fit a criminal profile for someone that is likely to posses/use illegal drugs. |

Re: Patchouli by IamSquid (undisclosed) on Apr 03, 2003 - 05:47 PM (User info | Send a Message) http:// | I assume yor talking about Buena Vista? Although I haven't been in Buena Vista durring summer, I find it unlikely that it's any different from the rest of the year as San Fran really doesn't have seasons. Golden Gate park as well is full of hippies toking up for everyone to see, especially in the part near Haight, at the edge of the Panhandle, and yes, I did see a few of those kids burning sticks of incence out in the field and it didn't bother mee.
But hey, I can't speak if yoo grew up there. |

Re: Patchouli by Shade (Shade@Gothcult.com) on Apr 03, 2003 - 01:53 PM (User info | Send a Message) http://www.hotelshade.com | Actually, having been on a crowded Paris metro during those first hot flushes of summer, and having walked down Haight at all times of the year, I'll take the French over dirty hippies any day. The Frenchm bathe just as regularly as the rest of the world that has indoor plumbing, and they only give out permits for one dirty hippie per station or street corner. |

Re: Patchouli by IamSquid (undisclosed) on Apr 03, 2003 - 05:52 PM (User info | Send a Message) http:// | I admit, I haven't een to Paris is years but one of the memories that stands out most is the rank of BO poorly masqued by perfumes. As long as we're talking about Haight I find the smell of patchouli pouring out of the legions of head shops less offense than the funk of the gutter punks in front of them. |

Peta, or People for the ethical treatment of animals, is an anti-cruelty orgnanization. |

Hey hey hey! I particularly like the smell of patchouli. I generally only burn the oil, but sometimes I place a dab behind my ears, a dab on my neck, and some between my breasts. I used to dislike patchouli when I was younger, but I have grown to like it, especially when mixed with a rose oil.
I do not promote the use of ambergris, therefore I buy the uber cheap oils.

I like patchoulli in MODERATION. I don't wear perfumes or oils (unless for some bizarre reason I feel the need, which is RARE..like once every year or so), but michael wears patchoulli. He wears it LIGHTLY *AFTER* showering. It's more like a super subtle musky hint, not a fucking overpowering knock you on your ass rotting dirt and animal gunk nerve gas attack. It doesn't hide BO, its the olfactory equivalent of biting your thumb when something else hurts...one thing that is worse will make you "forget" about the other.
As for hiding the smell of pot smoke....perhaps THAT is why that awful bitch at the hospital told michael and I that she "Smells pot smoke". Perhaps the stupid wad impersonating a caring health professional smelled the smell of pot smoke DISTRACTION.
What I really hate is perfume in general. Especially those people that douse themselves in ANY cologne or perfume or oil so that they have this noxious chemical agent wafting with them wherever they go. I hate it. And for some reason THOSE are the people that ALWAYS get all up in your face or stand really uncomfortably close to strangers. I hate them. They are the devil.

I like the smell of patchilla (patchouli and vanilla combined), its way yummy!! Amber would have to be one of my favorites though if I am gonna wear scented oils. Lavender is nice sometimes but a little to sweet for my taste. Frankincense and Myrrh smells good on a guy as long as they dont drench themselves in it. Palmarosa is nice.....oh let me shutup now before everyone thinks I am crazy

I like some varietys of patchouli.. but I prefer it mixed with other stuff. I'm pretty sure my favorite oil mixture has some in it. I think there is some musk and amber to go along tho.

Patchouli is associated with Saturn, Sun and the Earth element. It is used in love spells to attract a lover. It is used for clairvoyance, energy, grounding, lifting the mood, love, lust, protection from negative magic, sex magic, success and peacefully getting rid of troublemakers. Burn it as an incense for growth in business, clairvoyance, fertility, happiness in love and money. Use it in Candle Magic for prosperity. Use to reverse spells. Use its scent for fertile and long-lasting love. Also use it as an incense in Earth rituals for divination. Grow in your garden to aid its healthy growth. Use its oil as an aphrodisiac and for balancing the Yin and feminine aspects, creating a sensual mood, dispelling negativity, fertility, high sexual energy, money, peace of mind, prosperity, aligning and purifying the Chakras, sensuality, warding evil and negativity and youth. Use the leaves for passion. Use in Sex Magic. Wear the oil to attract members of the opposite sex. Wear in any form for fertility. Use for work with the base Chakra.
And that is why Patchouli is an assential herb in anybodies grimoir.
Its strong smell is a sign of its strong alignment to the Earth element. This brings a stabilising quality to the love it brings through its use in charms.

that stuff sucks... it makes it hard for me to breathe. But so does most incense. It's not like I'm oversensitive either because tobacco smoke doesn't bother me at all (and no, I'm not a smoker).
Thankfully, my roommate (who recently went through a phase of filling the house with assorted stinky stuff), just moved out, so I don't have any direct contact with it anymore.

Personally I never understood wearing patchouli. I mean as a Goth, not as a Hippie, but everyone's entitled to do as they wish. I use Bulgary
As for the scent, two of my three black suits are smoked with incense (meaning they smell likewise), so I don't smell what others wear or smell like unless I am VERY close to them. So close it implies ew won't be hanging around for too long.
