Drama: Tragic Saving Graces |
Posted by
Devin on Wednesday, November 27, 2002 - 04:01 AM PST
Ok, I was trying to come up with some response to the Tragic Fatal Flaws post, and I decided this was the best answer. Instead of trying to flame an anonymous poster into charcoal, I decided the zen answer would be more fun and effective. I figured why not ignore the poster and respond with all of the cool stuff about everybody here. There’s certainly plenty of that. So I wrote up a list of everyone’s best qualities as I see it. Shall we get started?
A Saving Grace is a literary device used to make an otherwise evil and wicked character into someone we can identify with and like. The fact that a person has one should flatter them. Being evil and wicked is goth as fuck. And as for me pointing them out – keep in mind that I’m not hitting on you (well maybe a little in some cases).
If the format and tone of all of this looks familiar, it should. I just copied the original post into notepad and changed most of the words. So if you aren’t mentioned here, it’s not because you have no saving grace, it’s just because you weren’t in the original post. If you have anything to add PLEASE do so in the comments – especially for the people that I’m not qualified to comment on - since there’s some people I just don’t know well enuf to know their best qualities. So in the original order, here we go.
Bettie_x – can be mean and nasty but is NEVER wrong about who she’s mean and nasty to. Also is never wrong about who she’s defending when she’s being mean and nasty. Even if she believed in karma, she’d be fine cuz I’ve never seen anyone deserve better karma for doing meaner things.
Alugarde – Enthusiasm is a good thing. I remember when I had enthusiasm. I kinda miss it.
Cashmere – This brilliant already? Whew, just wait…
Closetgothbabe – Usually people this fun and friendly and easy to talk to are NOT this openminded and sexy and goth as fuck.
Callei – Everyone else in the world is rated on a different scale of coolness, cuz it wouldn’t be fair. There is nobody remotely close to this cool. She’s also always right, and brilliant, and absolutely delicious. Me and ickgirl started the site, so we were both editors by default, but when it came time to choose another editor, we didn’t even consider other candidates, it obviously had to be callei. There are a lot more people here now, and if I had to decide now, it wouldn’t be any different.
Comedian – It takes talent to suck people into your world and make them see things through your eyes – not everyone can do that. If I’m remembering right, I think comedian is also one of the only writers (if not the only) under 18 who has never had an article rejected.
Rae – If Rae decides you’re one of her friends – you’re very lucky – I’ve never met anyone more loyal or protective. If she even thinks someone’s messing with you, they better hope their teeth are not within boot range. She’s also the beautiful vampire goddess that a lot of kids are trying to be.
Poison – Everyone thinks they are openminded, but poison really is. Plus she can communicate complex ideas in 2 languages that most people can’t even say in one. (Not to mention she’s extremely hot)
Sindel – Our most misunderstood member. Everyone should take some time and get to know this one (it does take some time). I know you’ll be very pleasantly surprised. If her 15-ness bothers you, then you are one of the people that hasn’t talked to her enuf to know why the rest of us adore her. (And no it’s not cuz she’s so hot, that’s just a bonus).
Rogue – Brilliant boys are hard to find. Nice boys are hard to find. Boys who share good are hard to find. If you’re the type that likes boys – you wish you could find a boy like rogue. (And the good part is, if you’re not icky, you might be able to borrow him).
Meranda_Jade – falls in love at the drop of a hat. It IS DEFINATELY good for you to be in love with EVERYBODY.
Litho – Knows what makes things pretty – not many people know that. Learns well from other people’s mistakes (usually), and knows what kind of people are worthwhile and which aren’t. Also one of 2 people who grew up in the state of Washington who I can stand to be around.
Ickgirl – The other one of 2 people from Washington that I can stand to be around. Good at mommying people and kittys. Playful and fun and comfortable to hang out with. Sarcastic and amusing and very nice to cuddle with (among other things).
Dolorosa – There’s very few boys that I consider brilliant (most of them are on this page) – dolorosa is definitely one. It’s also kinda scary that he has no fear – I’m very glad he’s on my side.
Morte_ascendo – Everyone should take “Nice” lessons from Morte. He can teach you how to be nice without being a pussy. It’s not as easy as it sounds.
Vampcourt – If you’re a gothling trying to figure out how to be a gothbabe – court should be your textbook. It’s not that she’s really good at being the consummate gothbabe, it’s just that the consummate gothbabe happens to have an uncanny resemblance to court.
Devin – I am modest and humble, hehe.
Shade – doesn’t seem to have any flaws at all. It’s true actually. Even in person.
Mara – Fun and playful, and tripless. I haven’t talked to her enuf to know much more than that.
Necromancer – From her very first post I knew she was one of my people – and I knew I wanted to know her better. I don’t think anyone else here so instantly and obviously belonged here. It was nice to hear when talking to other people that I wasn’t the only one who thought that. A lot more to be said for this one, but I’ll leave it at that.
Arthegarn – Twice as brilliant as he would be if he wasn’t brilliant in 2 languages. Doesn’t know the meaning of peer pressure – sticks by what he believes even if it’s unpopular. Manages to hold is own (and sometimes win) in an argument against EVERYONE else on this site. I don’t think I’ve seen anyone else pull that off.
Schizo – Another one who can stand by what she believes and be vocal about it when she knows nobody approves. Can also listen to ideas she doesn’t agree with and make intelligent comments about them.
Sticcipus – Another one that I don’t know well enuf to comment on, but Mara and Cashmere say he’s cool so he must be.
MistressRavenDarque04 – Innocence is a good thing – hold on to it as long as you can. You don’t get it back until you start losing your memory. Another VERY pretty girl with a delicious vibe.
Ianthe99 – There’s very few people who you don’t even have to see to know they’re yummy. This is one of them.
Feralucce – I’m sure everyone agrees that feral’s art is just amazing. Plus he does so much other stuff it’s suprising he even has time to type hello on this site. Pretty damm nice boy too (even if you’d never guess it from his scathing articles).
Monolycus – Maybe you have to be paranoid to be this genuinely interesting. Besides, if you know who’s reading your mind, you know that it’s usually safe to say exactly what you’re thinking even when people might not like it. Plus tin foil hats are cool.
Gothvail – I wish all webcam girls were this nice.
Kat_vamp – I don't know this one - anyone?
IamSquid – A lot of people try to have unique and individual online personas – most fail embarrassingly - Squid succeeds.
ThatOneWastedChick – If I was that smart and lucid when I was 13 I’d be ruling the world by now.
BlueLinn – Another great artist who I should probably know more about so I can have better nice things to say about her
Psychopixi – happy happy perky happy bounce bounce happy cheek-pinch bounce perk perk – If you ever decide to sell your batteries, I want to bid on them – until then, don’t expect anyone to keep up. (I don’t think this one needs changing – it works equally well here)
Kira – cute and adorable as hell – and not just in pictures. Plus she’s really openminded and just all around cool. Wish I knew more people like this.
Mutant_Duckie – Other people on the site speak 2 languages – but she speaks klingon! How much cooler can you get than that?
Biko – SHOW ME a prettier kitty. (Ok, maybe I’m biased a little)

That just really made my day better, especially since I am sick. Thank you for being such a good friend. Truly touched my heart, even though the other person did peg me on the sheltered part, but you understand me, and know me, and they do not. We love you Devin. *HUGS* majorly

Devin - If Devin gets attached to you, you're very lucky. Chances are if you meet him once, and you EVER see him again, then he's attached to you. Devin gives the best squishies, and glows better than any boy I've ever met (especially when he's just come back from Maui).
Though some people may think he can be flippant or uncaring, he'll even help you bury your pet guinea pig, and cry with you while you say goodbye.

Okay I have another saving grace........for Sindel!!
Sindel is beautiful!! Most people I know who are 15 either have all that acne going on, or they don't have enough time/don't bother to cover it up. Ye gods, I wish I looked like that......

A little Yin with your Yang

I can not even begin to tell you how impressed I am with the way that Devin handled this. I actually cried... I kid you not. This is what writing is all about, and I must humbly admit that I could not have pulled it off half as well. Damn it.
I wasn't all bent out of shape by the Tragic Fatal Flaws post... it seemed to be very affectionately done to me. It really came across as more flattering than incendiary (Come on, let's be honest with ourselves and each other, nobody was really raked over the coals there and the majority of us were treated with kid gloves. Kind of nice to get a nod, I thought.) The Mystery Author seemed awfully insightful and even downright amusing at times, even if s/he drew attention to those foibles we might like to try to downplay or gloss over about ourselves. Nevertheless, those "flaws" are what make each of us unique and worth getting to know in the first place.
Still, the piece was not received well because (apart from the unsettling feeling that somebody unknown to us is actually reading what we write... welcome to the web) it was not a balanced critique. Along comes Devin to brilliantly fill in the blanks and tie up the loose ends that the first part left dangling. I can not help but read both of these posts as a single work (no matter who is responsible for the authorship of the first part) that puts a human face on us. We are not two-dimensional characters here (even if that is what some of us would like to to project ourselves as), but three dimensional human beings that are both flawed and virtuous. Taken together, these two posts both condemn and redeem us as individuals and no longer simply faceless, shapeless, cartoonish screen names that cease to exist when we turn off the computer.
Kudos to you, Devin... and yes, to the Mystery Author as well. And thank you both for raising the bar impossibly high for the rest of us would-be writers! I am
your faithful servant,
~Monolycus.

Re: A little Yin with your Yang by Devin (devin-at-vibechild-dot-com) on Nov 27, 2002 - 11:43 PM (User info | Send a Message) http://devin.vibechild.com/ | Actually you nailed exactly what I was thinking by writing it. After reading the first one, my overwhelming impression was that this one was inevitable - I thought about waiting for The Anonymous to post something like this - but started worrying that it wouldn't. Kind of like how Mozart's nanny used to get him out of bed by playing a Dominant 7th (5) chord over and over until he came tromping out of his room to resolve it back to the Tonic (1).
Of course my motivation was not really as noble as you make it sound. My inner brat was poking at me saying "if it won't tell us who it is, steal it's article" - In the end, that's really why I wrote it.
Brattily,
-Devin- |

First of all, Devin, thank you for all the nice, wonderful warm-fuzzies you spread with this post. I think a lot of people have appreciated it...It's wonderful to have something nice said about you, and it made a lot of people feel really good aboutthemselves...
After looking at this for a few days, I noticed some things that were really funny. Comparing this to the other post, I realized that the other one got way more comments than this one... is it that people were offended by what was said about them in the last one, and felt the burning need to defend their characters? Or is it more fun to react to an insult than to gracefully accept a compliment? The other post, while making it seem as if it was saying mean, nasty bad things about others.. really wasn't. No one was given a really horrible tragic flaw, at least not to my eyes. It actually said some nice things about people, if in a somewhat backhanded fashion. Why didn't people get the warm fuzzies from that one? Because it was portrayed as an attack of some sort, though I don't think it really was. It was the anonymity of the author, and the fact that what was said were considered "flaws" If you read between the lines of it, though, the flaws were stated to be a good thing, making all of us seem more human, and giving us a fullness of character that others might not think of us as having. I think the general reactions of people have shown much more about our collective character than any anonymous poster could have pointed out...
What really gets things going around here is when someone posts something to get us all fired up and reactive... it generates lots of comments when we can disagree about something. The most popular forums are the ones in which people can go back and forth about something... with the exception of the games ones... and they are entertaining and give us something to go on as well. But when someone writes something that everyone agrees with, or that is nice and fun and makes us feel good, we suddenly turn shy about commenting on it. Maybe that's because everything only needs to be said once when everyone's happy.
Oh well... my thoughts, and just a comparison for the sake of comparison...

You go, Girl! by Monolycus on Dec 01, 2002 - 09:05 PM (User info | Send a Message) | Thanks, M_J. That needed to be said. I think it says quite a bit about us that if you take two posts that are identical in tone and content, one supposedly negative, one supposedly positive, that the former will generate THREE TIMES the number of reads and responses. Statistics are interesting things... they can say nothing about an individual, but speak volumes for groups of things. The numbers here say that we aren't so terribly interested in feeling good about one another, but we just love to have something to bitch about. Great experiment and nice observation.

There is something valid about the cathartic approach, though... in the colourful words of my bizarre Uncle Dexter when people accuse him of being an asshole: "Without an asshole, you'd never get rid of shit." I'll assume it is a pithy aphorism and not think very long about it.

The fatal flaws post suddenly doesn't strike me as a flame...to tell you the truth, they were honest opinions, if that person wished to truly scathe us, he-she-it would have been much nastier...The only thing I didn't like about it was the Anonymous part, thats just cowardly...the rest of it was at least civil...
And mad cheers to Devin for reacting in such a marvelously mature fashion...

Re: Now that I think about it... by bettie_x (strangersangel@hotmail.com) on Dec 08, 2002 - 07:21 AM (User info | Send a Message) http://bettie_x.tripod.com/ | It's cause he's all laid back and stuff :)
The only things I didn't like about it were:
1. It was anonymous...no it doesnt make you a "perfect mirror". It keeps your ass from getting toasted directly..it's called bein a "perfect pussy"
2. I don't need to be told my flaws. I can pick them out on my own, believe me, I've spent a lifetime going over and over and over and over them myself.
3. It was unbalanced, and sometimes just flat out rude...especially since the person didn't know half the people here, except for what they sometimes posted...and everyone knows what people are like when safely behind a computer screen.
The reason I liked devin's "reply" was not because I wanna be told the GOOD about me, but because it brought much needed balance to the whole thing. Nobody is the sum of their "fatal flaws" nor are they the sum of their "saving graces". People are both. Plus, it was a tad condescending, a sort of "I'm soo intelligent and insightful and I know you ALL so well and I know how your brains work...look, watch". I don't like the idea of being anyone's test study, project, or analytical game for a pastime.
I've taken critisism (constructive and ..uh...otherwise) my whole life. I"m a big girl. I'm not bothered by the fact that I have "flaws", I'm bothered by the arrogance of the poster.
I also find it really really interesting that they never popped back up to even partake in the discussion of their "little study". It's a "look what I can do...now watch me hide and not own up to my own words".
I feel an "analysis" of THEMSELVES would have evened it out even more...those that take the time to spend ENOUGH time on a website to "pick apart" strangers, yet can't even look at themselves is typical child behavior.
Besides, it's always said that the flaws you see in others that bother you the most are your OWN worst problems. You see yourself in those "flaws" and that's why it bothers you so bad :)
that's my two cents: Chaching! |

Oh man, I really gotta start reading the old posts more often. I missed all the fun!
I originally came here to more or less make an ass of myself, not as a troll per-se, but just to see how long people could endure my sense of humor before labelling mee a moron (a title I probably deserve given my identity here) because goths so rarely have much of a sense of humor at all! What I found was something I never thought possible, an online community that I actually wanted to be a part of.
I just want all of yoo to know that I've enjoyed my time here and many, if not all of yoo, have been an inspiration. I wish I could go over the list as Devin has and give yoo each indiviual saving graces as I see them but I'm sure yoo all know who yoo are (actually I'm trying to come-up with someone who isn't)!
