Articles: Smengy People Agianst Pagans |
Posted by

So I'm wiccan and so are a lot of my friends. My friend Amy and I have been wiccan for a VERY long time now but we are also under age to go to the Pagan night outs down here in Virginia. So we did some research and founded an organization called Underage Pagans of Virginia (UPOV)
We made flyers and handed them out to a SELECT few. It wasn't many people at all. It was telling about a pinic we had planned on the 3rd to celebrate the opening of our organization and celebrating Beltane. On the flyer in bold print it states that all are invited Pagans and Non-Pagans just as long as you bring peace and a Snack dish or beverage. By the end of the day the both of us are sitting in the office and our administrators tell us that we can be suspended for spreading occult matrerial!
So they call up our parents and are like are you aware that your daughters practice witchcraft and My mom was Like, "No ut my daughter is Wiccan". My Administrator is like "thats what I meant by witchcraft". So my mom sets if off to her about being ignorant and predijuiced.
Amy's mom did the same thing. So they have our teachers looking out on us making sure we arn't handing out any flyers, and said if we get caught doing it that we will be suspended. WtF is that? Its an invitation to a picnic! People can hand out band flyers or party invitations but I can't voice freely that I am Pagan and we are holding a picnic?
And it just doesn't stop there. I can't even access a simple pagan website at skool anymore. Last week I could and now I can't? You want to know why? Because it is stamped as OCCULT!
grrrrrrr

Then next time, hand out flyers with a verbal hint that it'll be a pagan affair, but don't put that on the paper. That way there won't be any hard evidence... Also, if you go to a public school, there's a special thing protecting you... The freedom of speech. But if you go to a private school (like me), then I suppose you'll just have to sit it out or move elsewhere...
Speaking of school censorship (that -should- be an oxymoron...), my favorite workaround site for bess just got nixed by the "Patriots for Decency" (I made that up) at N2H2... Maybe I could create my own workaround? Oh well...

If it's a public school, then chances are that they make you use IE for browsing, and Microsoft Proxy server to block sites. All you may need to do is download either Netscape or Mozilla. Should let you get access to whatever you want on the net.
As for the fliers, if they let anybody else pass out fliers, then they have to let you pass out yours. Give the ACLU a call, they love this sort of thing.

I speak from experience...

i go to a public skool......Our skool is pretty diverce....With different cultures and backgrounds represented....When one of the skool clubs did The christmas mother the jewish children fought against it. Last year we had The association of Christian Athletes which we no long have......And last year at a skool forum against the Confederate flag and other symbols we argued and were allowed to wear pentagrams...and I am known for saying "If you take away my pentagram be prepared to leave your crosses at home..If I can't wear my pentagram there is no way I will rest until you can't wear your crosses" that have everyone up on their haunches
But I am waiting to see if they say anything about a christian event....I might even make up fake flyers and give them to a friend to pass out and see what they do!.....

Re: Re: Smengy People Agianst Pagans by hipperthanu on Apr 24, 2002 - 03:33 PM (User info | Send a Message) http://www.angelfire.com/goth/glaiven/ | My school had up this sign that said "Nowhere to go? Go to bible study!" and had some info on a bible study thing going on.. I came up with a not-very-nice-but-funny-to-me idea of putting one up next to it that said "Nowhere to go? Go to hell!" .. I made the sign and everything.. but when I went to put it up the other one was gone.. ahh well.. upsetting.. I haven't seen one since.
That's crappy about your school. Descrimination is obviously prevelent. Mine is pretty clear that if the event is religiously affiliated it can't take place in school, otherwise they've been fine with most everything I've seen.. Of course if there were wiccan/pagan fliers going around things might be different.. I'm not sure. |

Re: Re: Re: Smengy People Agianst Pagans by Rogue (Rogue@skew.org) on May 01, 2002 - 09:10 AM (User info | Send a Message) | Used to do stuff like that when I was in school (and still do at work occasionally), taking their signs and duplicating them as closely as possible while changing one key word or phrase to appease the Sacred Chao. We also used to go through the woods at night and come up behind a restaurant with a low billboard sign -the kind with the letters you arrange to say things- and change it to say funny things since it was the first thing you see coming into town besides the "welcome from Sertoma"... This was a hot dog joint, so they had lots of good words already like jumbo and foot long. Markoff Cheney was my boyhood idol, in case you hadn't guessed.
The best stuff is when you get a hold of the first draft copy of the school handbook (formatted, etc by the journalism club where you have an inside guy) and make changes right before it goes to the printer so you have the official documents saying that nobody with a phallic dimension of less than twelve inches in length (or metric equivalent) shall be permitted to particpate in intramural sports...
Nothing like having the official copy contain the joke.
Not too long ago near here, though, Chao created itself when the local Taco Bell put up lettering saying "Now hiring closers" and the "c" fell down from the wind... You can't make up stuff like that.
All hail Eris! |

Hey, I feel you. I don't have the underage problem, but I am Wiccan, and I have been for aobut five years. I am very proud of that fact, and I don't mind answering people when they ask questions, but I have been labeled as a devil worshipper and evil because of it. I couldn't get a job in my hometown even if I tried because it is so very conservative, and very religious. I get shit form my professers here as well. The way you have to think of it though, is that it does make you stronger, because you have to work harder to get what you want, and you appreciate it more, not to mention that you are opening the way so that hopefully the next gereations of pagans/Wiccans will have it a bit easier. More power to you!

Re: Re: Smengy People Agianst Pagans by feralucce on Apr 24, 2002 - 08:10 AM (User info | Send a Message) http://feralucce.vibechild.com | You'd be surprised... there are social stigma at every level... I am pagan... and in my town, for some odd reason, that is acceptible... BUT... I am Erisian... follower of discordia/eris...
We have an organization known as "Hearthfires"... it is a gathering of local pagans... Asatru, Wiccna, Azure Phoenix Wicca, Quabalists, and even a true satanist or two... and many many many more... but no Erisian ever stepped forward to these people...
I discussed it with my With the Chaos Chao Cabal of Broken Birch... my coven... it makes sense... if you are one of us... and the room became charged ... a slight murmur passed through the assembly...
"Feral, was it?"
"That is correct"
"Well, this gathering has a long tradition of allowing existing members ask questions of proposed members. We will do that now."
"Ummmm.... O.K."
"Feral... (insert dramatic pause here)Why would 'your kind' (she actually said that) want to come here and destroy the peace we have strived so hard for."
TO make a long story short, I tried to explain that we exist so the world does nto stagnate, and ended up being blamed for a lot of stuff which I am still not sure of today...
in case you were wondering, my response to all of it at the end... a rude gesture and even ruder noise...
so... even in the "enlightened" there is bigotry |

::holds up glass:: cheers, welcome to america! ain't it beautiful? the first amendment seems to be applying less and less each day. i say just forget them. pass our your flyers and fight it to the death. get all the wiccans together to protest. they can't suspend a ton of people for the same thing. and if they do, you have a perfect time for your picnic!

If you put on your flyers "Come get suspended with us and have a picnic" the administrators won't suspend you. Kids aren't the only rebels. They'll try to do the reverse psychology thing on you - even though you're obviously doing it on them.
I had a punk friend in high school who used to carry around a hip flask full of vodka in his back pocket in plain view. When the teachers would ask him what it was, he's smile and say "Vodka, want some?" and try and hand it to them. They'd laugh and say "Yea right Glen." They never once checked. Thought it was water.
It's all in your approach. |

Re: Re: Smengy People Agianst Pagans by Schizo on Apr 24, 2002 - 04:37 PM (User info | Send a Message) | I don't know about less and less. At least they don't hang us or burn us at the stake anymore. Not that I agree with the discrimination. Far from it. It's the whole separation of church and state thing. Can't talk about religion in a public place. It's all bullshit. The whole separation clause isn't even in the constitution. It's in some letter Thomas Jefferson wrote. And even if it weren't bullshit, all it means is that public institutions can't push their creed down other people's throats. The private person i.e. the student at the public school, has every right to communicate his or her beliefs. And it's unconstitutional to stand in their way. |

The best thing you can do is hang around the christian club then wait for them to pass out flyer for a non-school event then bring it up to you adminstor with the names of the students who are giving it out and at least 2 other wittness (perferably someone who not a close friend) and tell them that they have to make it stop ( go through your hand bookand pull out anyother violations you can get) or you will sue the school for discrimination because its against the law to not stop them if the did that to you ..... it will work trust me the same kind thing happen to my club at school they were putting all these restriction on our club cause it was a gay-straight club and we were dealing with "sensitive subject" and couldn`t have a televised annoucement like with the name of the club cause it had the word gay in it so we threaten to sue and we didn`t have to spend a dime on a lawyer cause if you go to the right people they`ll take care of it for you! that all you really need proof wittnesses and a threat of a lawsuit and you`ll never hear a word from them again ;)

Personally...I'd hit 'em over the head with a rubber duck, then when they were trying to figure out what the hell was going on, knee 'em in the groin and smash their larynx with their son's soccar trophy, oh god how they're proud of that trophy...yeah...then as they lay gasping wide eyed on the ground like fish thrown out of a pool...kick 'em again! Then gut 'em like the little guppies they are and use their bloody entrails to write NEW flyers!! UPAST!! Underage Pagans Against Stupid Teachers! And then say "Who's laughing now funboy! Huh!!?" And then laugh at 'em...
Or you could just say..."fuck you." Point out the freedom of speach and freedom of press...and if and when they kick you out of school, either write a letter to a sympathetic congressman or one of the figure heads of the pagan-wiccan culture...a little elbow grease goes a long way, particularly the figure head types are willing, even ready to help out in a situation like this.
Witches and their ilk have been burned and persecuted for way to long...it's time we started holding the torches...(Although technically I'm not a Wiccan...but still, I'm sure if the Children had been around way back when, shit, we'd be barbecue.)
I still think you should brain 'em though...

“Speaking of school censorship (that -should- be an oxymoron...)”
Ironboots, I couldn’t have said that better myself.
I know that you have a constitutional right to organize a public assembly of any kind. Those people at your school are idiots, then again, what school doesn’t have ignorant, overpaid, know-it-all administrators I bet you they’re also Christians but more so they believe they’re keeping a “evil religion” out of school and are “separating church and state.”
That’s the problem when you’re up against people with power. If they don’t like something, they can ban it with threats. You don’t have to take that though... *that old twisted sister song starts playing*
You should organize people who are against schools trying to take total control of YOUR life, they have no right to do this. Wiccan is not a occult religion but ignorant minds will think that. If teachers at your school say that Wiccan is occult then you can tell them that Christianity is no different. You have masses of people flocking to church, repenting the church’s idea of sins, “donating” money to priest and having their minds brainwashed. If anything, Christianity is a national “Heavens Gate,” they sent untold numbers to fight Crusades in the middle ages with a guarantee of passage to Heaven no matter what they did to people, just as long as it was in the name of Christ.
You gotta fight this. They can’t stop you from handing out flyers off of school property can they?
