I go to a very small state college about an hour away form where i grew up. I chose to go there because it wasn't to far away, so I would be familar with the territory, it was about my best option, money wise, and the university was just across the street so that in two years, I would be able to transfer over there and it wouldn't be as big of a hassle. Not to mention I thought I would get a better education from a smaller school. Boy, was I wrong.
The town where the college is located is a little nothing place that was founded by seventh day baptists a long time ago, and it is still quite religious and conservative. I thought, "not a big deal, right?" Wrong, I have been threatened in class, I have had people yelling shit out their windows, and so on. Not to bad for me to deal with, as I choose not to fight, or bring myself down to that level by awknowledging them at all, it stops very quickly. On the other end, some people are scared of me, and this would be incredibly funny if you knew me. I do know HOW to fight, I believe in being able to rely on yourself, BUT I am one of those annoying people that weaves on the sidewalk when it is raining to aviod stepping on the worms, and if there is a bee in my room, I pick it up and take it to the window down the hall to let it outside, and I do the same anywhere, even if people look at me wierdly, so its funny that i have had RA's who are scared to say anything to me. All of this I can deal with, no problem, most people like me once they get to know me, and the ones that don't, well, they don't really matter to me in the least anyway so I don't much care. What really bugs me about this place is that it is so small.

I know people in large colleges who say that attendance isn't taken in classes, and not worth any points to your grade. Here, classes are so small, that is really not an option. I can do all of my assignments, do well on tests, everything, but fail a class because I didn't attended a certain amount of classes. I don't skip class cause I am getting stoned or drunk or sleeping it off, i skip classes becase the teachers here are horrible. This is mostly a tech school, so being in the liberal arts and social sciences major, I am in the minority. Those two departments are an afterthought. Most of the teachers loathe what they are doing and it is obvious form their teaching methods. They don't care that you know the material, or that you are going to walk out of that classroom with greater enlightenment, they just want to see a body in the seat, even if that body is sleeping, or not paying attention, or whatever. Last time I checked, much of the information in classes comes from books, and I really don't need some moron to reread to me the chapter that I already read myself, I don't need someone to hold my hand while explaining how babies are made or whatever, and it really upsets me that what college (here at least) has boiled down to is just that, someone who hates their job, holding your hand and reading a chapter of the book out loud. I guess I never realized how DUMB some people are until I got to college, some people actually NEED this, and not for anything major, but like basic psychology or sociology, practically high school courses. While on the other end, I don't need this, so I don't attend every single class, and even though I KNOW the material better than anyone else there, I get punished for being smart enough to do it on my own. ARGHHHH!
