Anyone read the novel or the manga? I've read both and I think they both
kick ass!
I'll do a little plot thingy as to tell those who don't know of it a little
about it.
Japan is overrun by China and since China hates Japan and its people so
much, they make this program as a form of entertainment and population
control. This program consists of taking a class of Freshmen High School
students to a secluded island and forcing them to kill each other. One
student will win and be rewarded his or her freedom and a nice little
autographed photo of the ruler.
To ensure everyone plays this game, they are knocked out prior of arrival
via sleeping gas. The students have collars applied to their necks that
have a bomb inside them. If the students refuse to play and no one dies
within a 24 hr period all the collars are detonated. Throughout the game,
there are certain places on the map they are given that become forbidden
zones to make the game more challenging and to force the players to move
around. If you're caught in the forbidden zone, the collar detonates. You
can't leave the island because it's surrounded by the Navy and they are
standing by to shoot anyone trying to swim off.
Each student is dismissed at random 2 minutes apart and are given a bag.
The content of each bag consists of bread and water, a map, compass, and a
random weapon

I haven't read the books or any of the literature, but I have seen the film
and I found it fucking amazing. Genius splicing of a standard violence
flick and a telling social commentry, especially in this age of reality
television.
Its definitely something that I would recommend.
Are the books based on the film or is it the other way around? I jumped to
the conclusion that it was the books following the film and so didn't
bother to make the effort to read them as that sort of thing is usually
uniformly shit. Maybe it is time for a reevaluation?

Movies and manga are both based off the novel. I haven't seen the movies
yet, but I hear they changed it a lot. I saw the movie
trailors....something about 7th grade kids? That just messes the whole sex
appeal aspect of Mitsuko. Anyway, yeah, you should read the novel. It's
amazing.

The second film is dire. It starts off with a pseudo Saving Private Ryan
beach landing and much like SPR goes downhill from there. They'd given up
on the whole classmates turning on each other thing and instead pitted a
busload of kids against an island stronghold filled with an anti Battle
Royale terrorist group. Loved the first film and can't believe they made
such a mess of the follow up. Is there a manga sequel also? What happens
in that?

The manga mostly follows the novel's storyline. There are a few changes to
make it more interesting like Mitsuko is a total whore. The illustrations
are great. Then, there are a few changes in how a couple characters die.
It's still great. There are more than 9 mangas out right now.
