A friend recently joked:
Everything
But
Music
I'm resurrecting this ancient thread because I simply cannot contain my
disappointment regarding my Hallowe'en club outing this year.
I'm from Vancouver, and although the scene isn't massive here, it's a
fairly large size - large enough to house a divided selection of Gothic
musical tastes. Majority of this crowd is in their early 20's, and want to
hear loud thumpy oontzy music. However these kids don't spend a lot of
money on booze, so the liquor sales suffer, and the clubs complain they
aren't making their quotas. The older crowd tends to drink like fish, but
not as many attend Goth nights anymore because they can't abide the oontz
factor. So the DJ's here are in a bit of a bind. To get the older and
more affluent crowd out, they need to play music leaning toward the 'old
school' side of things... yet if they do, the club's attendance will drop
because the larger crowd of oontz-kids will get bored and stop showing up.
Then of course, there are certain DJs who don't give a bat's ass who is in
attendance, they play whatever they bloody well want to play, even at the
risk of not only clearing the dance floor, but clearing the club. And
yes, that exact thing happened only one month ago.
(warning, rant ahead)
I was very disappointed to discover last night (at our gala Goth Hallowe'en
event) that I found myself feeling the need to dance to only one song. The
whole night was one great big long thump-and-squeak fest that only
occasionally changed tempo. I was momentarily saved by The Cramps, but
those moments were not long enough to make me want to continue to go back
to our so-called weekly "Goth" nights (which have been promoted and DJ'd by
the same folks for the past 6 years). There were a LOT of older Goths
there last night (Hallowe'en tends to bring them out of the woodwork),
enough that should have made a difference to the set list. But
unfortunately it didn't. And I know how cheesy this is going to sound, but
I actually found myself flabbergasted that they didn't play (I mean
seriously, we were there at opening and right through til last song)
anything traditionally Gothic other than one Cramps song. I couldn't
believe it. Is not Hallowee'n the perfect time to play some Bauhaus, or
Misfits, or Siouxsie, ffs?? You know, actual spooky music, and not the
same thumpy crap we hear week in and week out? Gee, I can even think of a
song that actually has the word "Hallowe'en" as the title, which you would
think would be a bit of a necessity. I mean if you can't manage to do it
for any other night of the year, you MUST be able to do it for Hallowe'en,
no? Sweet Mary and Joseph, what a colossal disappointment.
Anyway, rant aside, you can't please all the people all the time. I know
that. We all know that. But honestly, an attempt to try once in a while
would be nice, especially for the biggest Goth event of the year.

In my opinion, if a DJ is worth his weight in music, he'll/she'll learn to
mix it up a little. ____________________ "People always say what we are looking for is a meaning for life…I don't

Amen to MRD's point.
In the goth night in the area we've got two regular DJ's, the first of
which plays mostly trad goth, the second plays modern and industrial, and
there's normally a third guy who'll play a bit of EBM, and random other
things. It's normally the resident DJ's that get the most people on the
dance floor though, which is fine by me.
In the goth night in Cardiff there was a lot of EBM, and in that club,
that's what got the most people on the dance floor.
:: Before the last goth night ::
DJ Osiris: I'm never playing "You Spin Me Right Round", it's so
overdone.
:: During last goth night ::
DJ Gothfunc: *plays "You Spin Me Right Round"*
Whole room: *yey let's dance*
DJ Osiris: Oops.
DJ Osiris: *dances like a mad thing* ____________________ Do not fear death so much, but rather the inadequate life. |

We have three top DJ's here, but two of them (the longest-standing ones,
who are also the ones who promote and bring in the majority of live acts)
are big into EBM. The remaining one is more into the trad and general 80's
type stuff, and he is *fabulous*. Of the two other DJ's, you'd think that
after working in this scene for the past 10 years, they would be more
comfortable with mixing in the more mellow with the loud & thumpy, but I
don't think they are. They throw us a bone every now and again, but not
often enough to make us want to hang around. I have talked to them both
about this, yet it makes no difference. As far as they are concerned, if
it's not on the request sheet, it doesn't exist. Telling them that if they
just play it, people will get up and dance to it (and thus word will get
out that they're playing it, and more of the old farts will start to appear
again) does not seem to do much good. To be honest, I have no desire to go
to a club night when DJ #3 isn't there, and even more so now. The other
two are good friends of mine, and I hate to say it but... they are as much
stuck in their own rut as I am in mine. ____________________ Art of Adornment ~ Victorian & Gothic Accessories
