I urge those in all countries and all states to protest... this one is
inexpensive, simple and a powerful gesture...

Boots: It is not only during an election that the idea of empirical
"right" and "wrong" are questionable at best, but I am extremely proud of
you for being able to recognise that. Even so, I do feel some things are
far, far preferable to others and will have to adjust to the fact that most
of my conclusions aren't in alignment with those of the mainstream. Eh.
I also think you hit on something with your (I presume) joking aside about
smaller, more autonomous communities. I've said before that I think that
is the only real way to go without disenfranchising all but a few elite
individuals.

Mono, my husband was thinking the same thing word for word. As we watched
one state after another in the midwest turn red on the electoral map, he
said "Ah, it's over, what can you do. But I just LOVE how they put out
voting for bans on gay marriage on the same ticket as presidential voting
to bring out the hard core xians and conservatives."
Trixy trixy. Well, not trixy, more trig, I should say.

Even though I am a Canadian, on November 2nd I was glued to my television.
The president of the United States affects the whole world. I was not
surprised to see Bush be elected, but I was disapointed. Although I live
in Canada, I am in contact with many, many Americans who voted in this
election, and almost everyone I know did NOT vote for Bush. It does not
seem right, that he could be in power when we know about 1/2 of the voters
voted against him. And I am willing to bet my favourite socks that most
of the people who did not vote at all were against him. That means 1/2 or
more of the Americans do not want him as their president. I will never
truly understand not voting. Voting is the only chance most of us will
ever get to shape our country, yet 60 or 70% of the population is
considered a lot of voters. I can understand that some people choose not
to vote because the choices are so limited, but wouldnt a change be a good
thing right now?
ever heard the phrase "Preaching to the choir"? On this site, you will find
that we are not the status quo of teh american public... I recommend you
re-read this thread adn you will see that we are ALL mystified by the
idiocy of american public...
Here is the reason only 70% turned out... two words sum it up... ELECTORAL
COLLEGE... in missouri, the state in which I currently reside, 51% voted
bush, 48% voted Kerry... 100% of the electoral votes went to Bush...
MEANING... 48% of the state's votes did not really fucking matter... so why
bother? Honestly???
NOW... please note that the countries in which we are installing democracy
have NO electoral college, etc... so... why the fuck do WE still have it?
Simple answer... because the vote is a farce... as the 2000 election
proved...
Hope this helps

Four years ago he resembled a weasel. Now he resembles a chimp. What
progress he's made.

has done as president the last 4 years?

I think more to the point when agreeing with Feralucce is: Get rid of the
Electoral College!
We have, a little optimistically, a reasonably informed voting public
(i.e., we know who the candidates are, most of the country can read, access
to debates through mass media, access to differring opinions via
literature/internet/etc). The electoral college is an institution of the
not-so-distant past when much of the eligible voters were illiterate or
barely-educated men with little or no knowledge of who the cadidates were
or what they stood for (although even today, one cannot always know what
the candidates truly stand for). Feral's point of saying that even though
Bush won by a slight majority of the popular vote in his state, that state
gave him ALL of the electoral vote just underlines the problem with current
elections.
And what was up with Kerry conceding the race? Pussy. (And not the good
kind, either).

bring in proportional representation, i say. everywhere that wants a
democracy, not just america. yes there are problems. the same lack of voter
turnout problems as in any system, and the possibility of red tape tie-ups
if there is no majority, but the coalitions formed could and probably would
lead to compromise, which is surely better than 'we happen to have enough
votes to do what we please, so we will. try and vote us down. oh no wait we
have the majority....'
just my twopenny'orth
it wont happen though. keep the status quo. make sure everything stays as
it has been. its vital so that noone has to think too hard unless they want
to. freeedooooom.

It's pretty obvious to me that if the end of days is upon us, *oh shudders*
that Bush is the wonderful anti-christ taken to human form. He will lead
the masses astray...into the ashtray (or hell or whatever). Isn't he evil
in walking talking form? Oh wait...oops...I mean't in wolkin tolkin foram.
Forgot my Texan vernacular for a second there. He's king of the awl (oil).
Them Irakies are jest in his way thuur. He will killem all dead, and get
our awl back fer us. Oh hurah for the awl king.
As an epitaph for our nation:
There is nothing more dangerous than a moron with power.
