Finally!!! I've managed to get a good web connection at home, and after
much hassle downloaded a decent browser.
I also have a good space for my own homepage, and are looking into the
mystery of html...
But as always, all - or most of - the good downloads are for PC, or OS
X...
So I'm wondering - any of you have any good suggestion for a Mac user? - I
have OS 9.2... ____________________ All stressed out and no one to choke...

What kind of downloads were you looking for? I have OS 9.2, and have gotten
a few interesting things. A lot of the stuff that is free for windows is
shareware on macs until you really start looking in the disty corners of
the web, though. ____________________ "Truth is always on the move. It is always somewhere, but never in the

Well, anything that has to do with photo, both editing and storing,
drawing/painting/image-making, and music...

If you can install OS-X on it, you really should - it works WAY better. And
all of the good new downloads for mac are all OS-X - It will save you a lot
of headaches in the long run. Email me and I'll try and point you in the
right direction.
Oh and duckie, you gotta play with OS-X - I thought the same thing before
it came out - even linux can't beat a real BSD machine with a pretty
graphics layer. ____________________ So Sayeth Me |

I played with OSx a bit and... jeesh. I really hate how goddamn user
friendly mac makes everything! I like having easy access to system settings
and resources to TWEAK and play! Not to mention the whole linear monopoly
that Mac has going on is just a pain in the ass.

Well, I guess the user-friendly bit is why I got a Mac in the first place,
I reckon they're a godsend to ppl like me, with either no time or patience
to fiddle around the PC too much.
And *blush* I must admit, the iMacs wew just out when I was shopping for a
computer, and the grey one looked just too good... OK, I'm such a girl...
But I'm pretty sure it's too old to run the OS X ____________________ All stressed out and no one to choke...

OS-X Gives you more access to system settings than windows. Open up the
Terminal and type some UNIX commands - all of the interface settings are
stored in unix style config files. You can even edit the menus of all your
apps (using vi or emacs if you want). And now that apple released their
X-Windows thing, you can compile most linux programs. I don't mind having
an easy way to start and stop the web server on my laptop as long as I can
get in there with a text editor and configure the thing unix style. If it
was just pretty and didn't let me do what I wanted, I wouldn't be using it
- but it does everything my Linux workstations can do, and runs most of the
same programs - plus photoshop and all the mac stuff. ____________________ So Sayeth Me |

Kat,
If you're saying you have a grey imac, then you shouldn't have any problem
running OS X. I have an older imac DV running it at home, with no
problems. I have added more RAM, but otherwise it would most likely be
slower than the graphite DV's they released. Devin is right when he says
all the newest, best downloads are for X. When I upgraded a few months ago
I went a little download crazy...
As far as programs, OS X comes with iphoto, which you can use to re-size
and optimize stuff for web. Otherwise I would check out mac cult sites like
macaddict.com for tips on free downloads. As a class-one nerd I would
recommend learning how to make very simple web pages in simpletext first,
so that you really learn HTML before going to a program that does it for
you. It will make life much easier down the road...and all you need is
simpletext and a web browser. There are lots of good books and webpages on
it too...
Anyway, don't let the mac bashers get ya down. I do 3D animation on PCs,
and I always look forward to going home to my mac at the end of the day. I
teach Photoshop and Flash to people who have never used a mac before, and
with OS X they feel comforable in a day or two...versus a year or two. I
just yawn and shake my head when people start in. You keep your ugly,
ineffecient, beige reject from the 50's and I will keep my mac. I don't
see any reason that a computer shouldn't be aesthetically pleasing. After
all, I stare at it 8-12 hours a day!

I like both mac and PC. I like mac because its realllly good for art
programs and what not.. and pc' s are fun for video games. However, your
more at risk to get virus's on a PC than you are a Mac. ____________________ "Thou shalt not be afraid of the dark, nor of graveyards nor ghosts nor the
