well...if you are reading Rice, I am going to assume you enjoy her writing style...so really, just read the other books. Who cares if you know the general outcome of some other stuff?

I try to read book series' in order when I can, but when I can't I don't stress over it. If I've read a book in a series out of order, and consequently know some of the stuff that's going to happen later on, well I still let myself fully enjoy seeing how things got to that point. I personally have always enjoyed Anne Rice's books myself, she also has a series written under the alias A.N. Roquelaure (the "Beauty" series) which is a series of erotica.

I haven't read anne rice in AGES....but I heard that but a few months ago her husband, poet stan rice died of an inoperable tumor. Very sad. I haven't read any of her son's work, christopher rice, but from what I've heard it's very very good.
I'll turn back to her some day. I lost my flavor for it, but I'm bound to run out of authors to read sooner or later...and more likely sooner. I figure by then she'll have enough piled up to keep me busy

I could never really get into Anne Rice. I read a couple of her books, but I just couldn't get attached to any of her characters, not even her beloved Lestat.
To each their own, then.

I loved the vampire chronicles...yah yah yah...totally trite for goths to read right? Well I enjoyed the first two I have had the pleasure of reading. I want to read some from her erotic series...are they good?

As someone said, each to their own. But I suspect, if you liked A Rice's vampire chronicles, you'll LOVE Wraethu by Storm Constantine, and anything by Poppy Z Brite. (Well, her biography on Courtney Love isn't really vampiric in _that_ manner, but still good...)
Wraethu is a book I can't say enough good things about, it has a kind of... I dunno, mix between cyber-futuristic and fantasy-angle on a new breed ('vampires') that develops after men have fucked the world up completely - harsh and lovely, sophisticated and brutish, and rather weirdly erotic... And a rather suprising twist to the whole gender-situation - I expect Sticupus would feel very at home in this setting
But again - each to their own!

I CANNOT get enough of Poppy Z Brite. She is by far my favorite author. My main problem with Anne Rice is that her stories are so jammed with descriptive paragraphs (ie: a whole page to describe a sunset and the effects of the said sunset on the viewer etc etc etc) that it takes away from the actual story. What I get from her after reading a book is a head jammed full of very beautiful scenery....and thinking "what was that about again?"
Poppy has a MAGNIFICENT balance between captivating STORYTELLING *and* the ability to beautifuly describe a situation. I can all but FEEL the surroundings she describes, but still be able to follow the storyline. She has the ability to bring a scene or emotion together in no more than a paragraph fully, whereas anne delves into it pelvis first, fucks it, then expounds on the side effects of fucking the scene/emotion, and a page and a half later FINALLY gets on with it.
She's a great writer, very talented, and I do SOMETIMES enjoy reading her, but she ain't got NOTHIN on poppy. Poppy is probably one of the most talented horror genre wrighters of this age. Hands down. I had the luck to get a hardcover SIGNED edition of "plastic jesus" off ebay for 20 bucks (SCORE).

I also hate the fact that they're making another fucking crow movie. If any of you have read "lazarus heart", a novel she did for the "crow" novel series, and if only they'd make a fucking crow movie off THAT BOOK and let her be involved from beginning to end to make sure they didn't fuck it up (like they've done to every one of those movies since the beginning) I would DIE. She might actually bring some respect and dignity back to the "crow" franchise.

I did read somewhere a while ago that she has a script in review for the film making of "lost souls" which should be VERY interesting if they ever get around to doing it

Anne Rice...ergh...I could be nice, but fuck that. One of my favorite dreams is lining up all of her vampires single file, then running th jet of a flame thrower across all of 'em. I mean, jesus...they're ALL the fucking same. Maybe a bit of history tweaking...but they act, talk, react and think exactly the same fucking way. She uses copious amounts of florid descriptives that just get repetitive and although I have read a few just to be knowledgable...I found them bland and completely unfufilling. As far as vampires go...Anne Rice is a bowl of wheaties. To much like a soft core porn/romance novel for me to enjoy...now Count Chocula...he was a REAL fucking vampire...he would kicked Lestats upptiy ass all over the place, and then when Louis and that chick from crazy/beautiful jumped in to help, he'd get his home boy Frankenberry to team up with the fruity yummy mummy and they'd rock some undead heads.
Poppy's cool though...very nifty...but generally, when it comes to modern writers, everyone just seems to be falling flat and not really trying anything new or remotely creative, just carbon copy characters, and half-assed ripped-off plots. H.P. Lovecraft...thats what it's all about...Chthulu is the biz-omb.

I know it would be more goth of me to like Count Chocula, but I'm afraid I'm a die-hard Cocoa Puffs fan. I would eat a box in a couple of days when I was pregnant, and wash it down with OJ straight from the jug! I mean a half-gallon of OJ a day, for a while there, until the acid started to make my stomach burn!

Damn pregnant cravings!

Haven't read Anne Rice or Poppy Z. Brite (cool name, by the way!) or even H. P. Lovecraft. I'd try them out, just to be on the same wavelength as the rest of you, but I'm afraid that being a mother means that reading is pretty much not an option. Books that used to take me a few hours are now taking me a few months. It's painful. Maybe when I finish The Lord of the Rings (for the umpteenth time), and Heavier than Heaven, and then read Who Killed Kurt Cobain, I might have time to get into something new. But then again, by that time, I will probably be reading bedtime stories exclusively. *sigh*

Oh, but some of the best stories in the world are bedtime stories! I hope you yankees have heard about the moomin troll, for instance, by Finnish author Tove Jansson, I swear those books are better than 99% of anything written for adults OR kiddies!!

Pardon my ignorance, but has the movie "The Breed" anything to do with this setting? Just curious...

Heck if I know, unless you mean "Nightbreed", and that is based upon Clive Barker's "Cabal"...

Wait...didn't Kurt Cobain kill Kurt Cobain? Thats gotta' be a pretty short book...heh heh...ha! I kill me!
Personally I think cereal is goth as fuck...

I remember Nightbreed, that movie was fun as hell...I just to pretend I was a critter from one of the Tribes of the Moon and hunt down the kids that lived next door to me...
Back to vampir novels though...call me a roleplaying dork, but I find that White Wolf has pushed out a lot of novels that are really quite good...based on their Vampire the Masquerade storyline, one in particular that makes no attempts at covering itself up as anything other than a vampiric high-end smut was a hell of a lot of fun...I think I gave that book to Merry...I kinda' hope it gave her ideas and I kinda' hope not, 'cause some of that stuff was whack yo'
My image of a vampire has always been something of a cross between tragic, beautiful cursed human, and rampaging undead monster from hell...I mean, the angsty romantic stuff is cool yeah...but shit, they feed on human blood for crying out loud...as sultry and sexy it is for a vamp to seduce and coerce it's prey...don't you think they'd just get bored of that after awhile and just reach out, grab some poor fool and crack him like a beer? I would...god knows I would...mm...beer...

Hey schitz, I dont' have a kid but I'm ALWAYS pressed for time, and one good way to cram in reading between rushing are short horror story compliations. If you wanna read Poppy Z (and I recommend you do!) "are you loathsome tonight?" is a GOOD one to start with, and "wormwood" is right there next to it.
And as for bedtime stories, Edward Gorey and Angus Oblong would be neato
Also, there is a new (to me) author out by the name of Lemmony Snicket and his series of "children's books" are called "a series of unfortunate events" featuring the Bouldaire children, and all the "unfortunate" and bizarre things that happen to them. I have "the bad beginning" and "the hostile hospital" (which is further down the series, but michael got it for me for xmas as a joke ie: his scary trip to the hospital he'd had just month or two before *lol*) and they are great. Meant for children, but "grown up" enough for an adult to enjoy.
And hey, as for "classics"...they're called the "grim" bros. for a REASON.

I haven't read any of anne rice's novels after I think "memnoch the devil" (which is by far THE BEST anne rice novel I've read, not for love of her prissy characters, but because it's fascinating in repsect to religion). I sort of lost interest after that one. I've also read the mayfair witches series, and they weren't bad, but her age old theme of constant burgeoning homosexuality and incest in every single character is well...getting booring.

Poppy NEVER get's booring

I've actually thought several times of getting into the children's books franchise...but then after letting my nephew watch evil dead II (his mother let him watch HANNIBAL for cryin out loud! I thought it'd be NOTHING to him, and he WANTED to see a scary movie!)and having to spend an hour convincing him that I'm NOT the scary lady that got her head cut off in the movie, lead me to believe that perhaps it's NOT the best line of work for me *LOL*

Then again, could I REALLY mess up america's children more than they already are?

I liked Anne Rice and her writing style - don't get me wrong. However, I also agree to the statement that a lot of her vampire novels are predictable in the sense that they tend to be another vampire's point of view of how things happened (again, only read up to Queen of the Damned) in the past. *le sigh* Where can I find the -real- story based on all of the vampire characters?
