I think there are to many legal social clutches already we dont need drugs
to make our nations more substance dependant. Alcoholics have a big enough
impact on society. Smokers have their own society’s. do we need more drugs?
no. we dont. ____________________ fucking classy. |

I accidentally wandered into an AA meeting whilst searching for a wedding
rehearsal. I got greeted with a hug from a funny looking woman who was all
"WELCOME!!" so, being totally unprepared I yelled THANK YOU!! and squeezed
the life out of her. I found the right part of the church (yes, I was in a
church for the first time in 18 years) and went on with the rehearsal.
What was even more hillarious that me walking into AA (and that woman was
so goddamned friendly I almost wanted to JOIN *HAHA*) was the ensuing
wedding, where I spent half my time as a bridesmaid standing in front of
the crowd with a sticker proclaiming "LOW RISE PANTY" on the back of my
shawl.
Anyhow I digress. Why would anyone drink that hard? Or do drugs?
Weakness, yes, but also pride, self loathing, anger, depression, you name
it. I fortunately do NOT have the stomach for alcoholism, and my boozing
comes and goes, but I can tell you from someone who drinks regularly but
who DOES NOT "party", that it's self medication. It slows my mind down so
it's not banging on the inside of my skull and keeping me awake all night,
it lets me calm down and relax, not be so angry and so uptight, it makes my
slightly quiet but nonetheless overwhelming world be still and silent, it
allays my anxiety, my chemical imbalance, my fear, my headaches, and my
temper. Will I ever become alcoholic? No. I don't have the genetic set,
nor as I said the stomach or the head for it, but I can see how others
could. I don't think it's OK, but I can see how easily it happens, and how
easy an out it is, that slightly slurred and stilted reality, the muted
colors and sound that are soothing to an anxious brain. I can admit that
booze is my weakness, but it's not my crutch. And I know how suceptible to
drugs and their affects I would be, so I stay away, for my own good.
As for everyone else, do what you want to yourselves, I don't care anymore. ____________________ Trapped in time. Surrounded by evil. Low on gas. |

the last person what I know of who tried to self-medicate himself with
alcohol was my grandfather. he ended up selling his farm, asking every one
in the family for money, living in an apartment in the back of a bar and
later become a penny pushing homeless shelter 60 year old. I'm not bashing
you or how you live yourlife. I'm just sayin, look out for yourself

SindelChaos, why do you judge one set of drugs and not another? It appears
to be the legality barrier. You are willing to accept cigarettes but not
joints? They are much of a muchness, only that marijuana is not physically
addictive and you only need about five to have a blast whereas cigarettes
I, for one, need ten just to avoid feeling antsy and irritable.
There are issues for and against each drug and it is so far from a black
and white issue it isn't true. Unless you want to go with the only really
accurate 'alien substances in our bodies are not good' which is still only
half true.
As for reasons, some people need their drugs to calm down etc as bettie_x
described, some people have a dependancy on addiction, and some people just
cannot find the joy in life without something to make it burn brighter, or
less intensely, or whatever flaw found in life. Life is not perfect, we all
know that, but a substance or two in you and you just don't care. Why
should one cope when there are alternatives. The only reasons I would not
do them are personal. Health issues which are frankly non-issues for me,
and certainly none of anyone elses business. I am more social when I am
high or drunk and society revolves, at least in part, around our
interactions while altering our states of mind. Think cigarette breaks,
coffee mornings, lunchtime drinks, nights out drinking, a quiet chat over a
cigarette and a brandy. Whatever. To say drugs are bad, period. Is so close
minded it isn't true, its almost as bad as saying 'Drugs are good, period.'
There are arguments and counter arguments that could go on forever. ____________________ Eritis sicut Deus scientes bonum et malum.

Well said woody Cigarettes do create a chemical change in your brain, and are
JUST as hard to quit as some other lighter drugs. Niccotine increases your
heart rate, your awareness, and a minute increase in the transmission of
information between brain synapses. There are other drugs out there that
do the same, only more intensely. And lets bring caffine into the
argument. It is a drug, too much can and WILL kill you (rather nastily,
too. Your heart simply speeds up until it bursts), and it also raises your
awareness, energy level, blood preassure, and heart rate. I know people
who NEED a coffee, a soft drink, or an energy drink like some people NEED a
cigarette, a drink. They are just as grouchy as someone who hasn't had
their morning cigarette.
And pale face: Your grandfather was an alcoholic, ie: addicted. I am not
addicted, I don't have the genes for it, nor the stomach or the head to
FORCE myself into it. I don't ever NEED a drink, but after a particularly
bad day I really really LIKE one or two. Sometimes, honestly I get sick of
"coping" with the bullshit that comes my way, so I kick back with a drink
and it lets me calm down and be not so angry, that I can really just sit
and THINK without everything else fighting for attention in my head and
overwhelming me. It beats the shit out of what doctors prescribe. Now
cigarettes? THOSE are my vice. Those I am addicted to. I've tried to
quit before and failed, but each failed attempt brings me one try closer to
success, and I intend to stop. But for now, I've only been smoking for 4
years, and it can wait until after the holiday season is over. And I've
also seen people smoke themselves into the hospital, and continue to smoke
after having a lung removed, or some other ghastly illness that a 3pk a day
habit for 30 years will get you. SPending THOUSANDS a year on smoking,
buying them when they can't really AFFORD them, buying cigarettes instead
of lunch that day. Cigarettes are JUST as bad to some as alcohol is to
others. ____________________ Trapped in time. Surrounded by evil. Low on gas. |

I know and I appreciate it, but what bothers me is when people go on about
the evils of drugs and booze, while they're chuggin their fourth coffee of
the day or on their second pack of smokes, like those THEY choose to
indulge in are NOT drugs.
My theory is that if you don't wanna do drugs, you are not going to, but if
you want drugs, you'll find them or they'll find you, so what good are the
"laws" anyway? They're a waste of time and waste of cell space while they
could be occupied with murders, rapists, and pedophiles instead of the dope
fiend down the street who just wants to toke up and watch MASH all day. ____________________ Trapped in time. Surrounded by evil. Low on gas. |

Ya. But there’s a difference between the dope head and the coke/heroin
