Well i currently work at a theatre, and the other night we had a couple
kids come in and for the life of me i couldnt understand a word they were
saying. Not that they wern't speaking english. But that they used no proper
english. It was that black slang stuff we all tend to learn to hate.
I was thinking to myself, do they know how stupid they sound?. and all i
could do was smile and act polite. But they had to top it off. Every thing
at the theatre is 3.50$+ (USD)
And there like what can i get with a dollar?
I mean come on. I coulda been like. You can get a 20 min phone call from
the payphone over in that corner! or you can get 2 xtra cheeses 50cents ea.
I swear. and im about to head back there in about 2 hours. ____________________ I stand firm in my beliefs.

black slang stuff?
Depending on where you live, that can be all that the know how to speak...
and no offense, dialectically speaking... i does not make them stupid...
are they a common site, people like that, in your theatre? ____________________ The earth turns on a tilted axis - just doing the best it can.

Oh, I would argue that people are getting stupider and I don't think it
matters one wit what the color of the demographic is. I mean, seriously,
have you tried to listen to teenagers having a conversation anywhere
lately. It would be fun if the make up language that everyone is using were
even remotely challenging but at the end of the day you realize that you
have just interpreted nothing but the most useless drivel. Honest, it was
all over the day people started saying "lol" that was a sign of the end
times. ____________________ It's like kegel exercises for your throat.~Monolycus |

LOL is not the end time sign... it is the smileys... and yes, on the whole,
people are getting less and less intelligent, but my point is this...
Just because you are raised in the inner city where that is all you hear,
does not make you stupid any more than being cockney or raised in
newfoundland ____________________ The earth turns on a tilted axis - just doing the best it can.

Well, that wasn't much of an argument!
I'm not sure that I agree 100% though - expressions can be so fleeting - a
lengthy description, even a full sentence, would often be too ponderous to
express facial expression. I mean *winks* expresses the soul of a wink
more accurately than "I am now winking at you" ever would.
Part of the dilemma of online conversation - more flexible than "snail
mail", more ponderous than voice - it created it's own notation.
Definitely irritating when used as a replacement for any meaningful speech,
but I think it has its place as as sort of punctuation.
Just my two cents. |

Yes, I am who I want to be, I'm how I want to be. There for why should I
change what I like about myself. If people dont like me for what I am. Then
they can just not talk to me.

Because... it implies that you are no longer growing.
Once you stop growing, you start dying... I do not suggest that you change
your beliefs because someone demands it... I suggest that sticking by your
beliefs wihtout consideration for additional information smacks of
fanaticism to a certain extent.
A person who grows, doesn't refuse to change their beliefs, but knows waht
they believe and when someone presents an idead that is compatible is
willing to adjust to the logical flow of the universe and spirituality...

I notice, however... that you have deigned to not respond to teh reall
issue I brought up...
black slang stuff? do you not also have a dialect that you were raised
with? I venture too far from home...and I am unable to understand a damn
thing people are saying... and they are white people... using taht white
slang stuff they use... there is not creole in west virginia... and it has
taken me 8 months here to actually understand what teh fuck people are
saying...
I have posited that it is not the language that people speak ,but the
intelligence behind it... I knwo several inner city dwellers... of white,
black, and hispanic (and one chinese) origin... reguardless of the slang,
dialectic and base language differences... they are still intelligent
people... perhaps it would do you some good to learn their dialect to the
point where you can say "I am not trying to be disrespectful by speaking in
your dialect, but I want to be able to communicate"
I guess, it seems like ugly american raising his ugly head... "It was that
__________ (chinese, cockney, scottish, hindi, cajun) stuff we all tend to
learn to hate." On the University of Missouri Campus, there was a person in
charge of the computer lab User Consultants. UC is a cushy job, help some
people out and do your homework and get paid... Thing is... most foreign
students have a better grasp of computers than most americans... (at least
at MU) I speak authoratatively, as I was a UC Super for 4 years. Anyway...
she came into a lab and three chinese ucs were talking in chinese...
according to my friend Xialu... it was mandarin... the lady told them, on
the job, you must speak english. Unwittingly she had made a racially
charged and, what was percieved to be, racially hateful remark. she lost
her job for it. Even though what she aws trying to say was "It is hard for
american speakers to approach you when you are speaking another language
and customer service suffers because of it... AND americans are paranoid
and they will pervice you as talking about tehm in a way that they cannot
understand. So... for the sake of customerservice, would you be willing to
try to keep communications not in english to the back room when applicable,
and if not, make the customer first in all things."
Abstain from teh appearance of evil... it is from teh bible, but it is
appropriate...when you appear evil, they tend to clean your clock according
to THEIR beliefs...

Now im not saying that a certain race is stupid. No that its self is wrong,
but the way they present them selves and talk.
Im more likly to think of some one more intellegent and respectible if they
are speaking properly.
And I myself try my hardest to talk properly and not use slang as much as I
use too.
My town over the past 5 years has gone from a quiet town to a popular
suburb of L.A.
Now about dialect I was raised with. I was raised to talk to whom ever I
was adressing and talk with proper english and use as little slang as
possible if non at all.
That is the way I was raised.
But it seems latly that most of the people in my town have not been raised
this way.
I do understand were you are coming from on the growing part. I don't shut
out others beliefs and thoughts. I may not agree with them. But I listen to
what they have to say and if it is somthing that I agree with, I will tell
them so. If it isn't then we talk about it so we may both understand it as
well as possible.
And no Im not racist. Ill agree that even white people are utterly stupid.
I do not pin point one race. Saying "black slang" Im saying were it has
started. Were instead of saying "the father of my baby" they go "my baby
fada" they turn all the words around and shorten them.
Now if there is any thing in here. I have no doubt that it will be brought
out. ____________________ I stand firm in my beliefs.

but you do not speak proper english in any sense of teh word... you speak
american... which, in and of itself, is a bastardization of the queens
english... which is a mish mash of words from many many languages, which
are bastardizations of latin. thari and many more...
My point is not that you sounded racist, but that language is an evolving
thing, and unfortunately... that has evolved into something that you cannot
understand... but it is not wrong in any sense of the word. No more than
the way you speak is wrong, just different... but it is not english... nor
is it technically propper, I am willing to bet...
No one speaks PROPER english... the rules of the language make it
impossible as a spoken language, and speaking we leave a lot to inferral
and most humans speak without using full sentences all the time. My baby
fada... is a different pronunciation of "My babies father" ... where I am
from... the people speak very well... but their enunciation and
pronunciation are completel different... but it is not wrong... it is swamp
talk...
I speak in an overly formal and exceptionally precise manner due to some
psychological problems I have... but I would not hve said the father of my
baby, but my "baby's father" if I were female...

You kno, Shadows, for someone who sounds so high falootin' and arrogant
about your English skills, you are making a lot of grammatical errors in
your posts.
The most obvious one is that the proper term is "My baby's daddy," not "My
baby's fada." This is "black slang" we are talking about here, not New York
burb slang. ____________________ Okay, dazzle me. |

I was not going to mention that. I, being dislexic and a speaker of Creole
first, have little room to speak on the writing skills of others...
but I would like to point out one GLARING inconsistency.
you were raised to speak without slang... but instead of using the
statement "they say"... you use dthe phrase "they go." Very much a slang
term ____________________ The earth turns on a tilted axis - just doing the best it can.

I have to admit if we are going to launch into an argument determining that
any single group of people are intelligent or otherwise based entirely on
their colloquial quirks then we are going to be really screwed. That's
basically the problem with language that becomes regionally distinct is
that is is both difficult to judge based on our previous associations and
possibly difficult to understand if your ears are unaccustomed. Feral and
his move to the hinterlands being a perfect example here.
I do, however, stand by my previous ascertain that LOL is a sign of the end
times. I mean that, very specifically when you are having a conversation
with someone and they say LOL while laughing, that is very much a sign of
the end times. As computer speak I'm not necessarily against a short cut or
emoticon being that they can and often do replace similar non-verbal
communication cues from a typical conversation. But when they get to the
point where people are actually inserting them into live speak, then we are
in trouble. ____________________ It's like kegel exercises for your throat.~Monolycus |
