Okay, I think I have a ghost or poltergeist or something. I have lived in this apartment 7 months.
When I first moved in here , I got weird vibes from the bathroom area. I dismissed them immediately because I just figured that I wasn't used to the environment yet.
Then, after a month or two, I started having these dreams. I've had premonition like dreams that tell me future events and such, so this makes this so much worse in my opinion. Well, it would happen like this:
I'd be dreaming normal dream nothing important. Then, out of nowhere I wouldn't be dreaming anymore and my subconscious would get ahold of me and say Sarah, Sarah get up! Get out of your room as fast as possible. Something is coming, something is coming from the bathroom!
I'd try to get up but my eyes would just roll back in my head and I'd try to get up but I couldnt like some massive weight was sitting on me. I'd then succomb into another dream state where I thought I would escape. I would then realize I wasn't awake and thus, the struggle would continue until finally I would just wake up out of torment with my eyes in severe pain.
As time progressed, the dreams got worse. I would start hearing something running from the bathroom into the bedroom and stand over me breathing heavily. It's even grabbed me and shook the bed.
I brought all this up to my boyfriend, and he actually told me that I'm not the only one in the apartment who has had these problems. Everyone that has slept in our bedroom which would consist of my boyfriend, his ex-wife, his kid, and the one or two one night stands after their divorce, has had similar dreams.
The other night my boyfriend started tossing and turning like he was trying to get up and he started talking to me. He said, "Sarah, do you hear that? The water, it's running over in the bathtub. Then he rolled over into a deeper sleep. I looked into the bathroom and didn't see anything. I didn't say anything about it because I thought he was conscious of what he said, but later that night he brought it up to me that he had another dream. He said he thought someone died in the bathtub via strangling or drowning. I asked him why and he told me about the water in the bathtub and he heard rapid water movements as if someone was kicking and then the water running over the bathtub onto the floor. I then, told him what I heard him say. He had no knowledge of it whatsoever.
I can no longer sleep when he isn't here for fear of things getting progressively worse. It seems to attack stronger when I'm alone.
Can anyone give me any advice?

I keep a digital clock by my bed and watch it, I note where my husband is and which sprawled out direction he's sleeping in, and before I was married I would note which uncomfortable area of my bed my wiener dog is sleeping in (which I still do and she still does. You wouldn't think an animal that small could be such a HOG) and I lie there watching the clock until it passes, then sit up and verify everything is as it was during the five minutes I was "under". Full on sleep paralysis is FRIGHTENING, and they are like mini-siezures where you have no control over your body whatsoever. I used to wake up as a kid like that and be SO frightened and trying so hard to yell for my mom, but all would come out of my barely moving mouth was air.

Now the difference....when I'm "half asleep" I sleepwalk, talk, fight, goof off, infinity. I don't remember MOST of it, but I usually remember talking and trying to shut myself up before I say something REALLY stupid, or being in the process of something I should know better than to be doing and thinking "oooo stop I gotta stop it", like when I woke up after hiking michael's shirt over his head, balling up on him, and digging my nails into his skin. I don't remember the time I tried boxing him when he tried to put me to bed, I don't remember the OTHER times I talked, the time I balled up against the wall making grouchy noises only to put my hands and feet on the wall and litterally butt-bumped him straight off the bed. I also don't remember HOW I used to get outside as a kid, only that I'd wake up in the middle of our field or out at my dad's shop at 3am.

When I wake up (key being awake ie: alert) paralysed, I know what it is, and I lie there till it passes. The few times I fought it did nothing.

Now spooks....I don't disagree that it's my own brain playing tricks, but it's just too real to not at least harbor another belief, and I accept both sides of it equally. Could be, maybe not, I'll know when I'm the one doing the harassing to some other kid decades down the road after I'm dead. I'll start with one of the worst things I've had happened to myself. I had gone to bed, but not asleep, and my room was dark. As I laid down my head I heard a faint sound like helecoptor blades that grew louder and one whole side of my face and body siezed and became dead, and I flopped down half on my back with my head turned (towards the clock on my nightstand). The sound increased and the pins and needles and tension did with it, and all of a sudden it just STOPPED, but I still couldn't move. After two minutes of this (watched the clock) I felt preassure on the other side of my bed where the dog was NOT, and then what felt like two small feet went RACING up my bed (stomping, the little snotrag) on top of me, planted a "foot" into the side of my face and bam. Gone. I laid there for another whole minute and a half before being able to move. I naturally got up, checked for cats, and when I laid back down I heard the noise starting up again, so I wrenched myself up (the seizing had started again) and yelled "CUT IT OUT!" and the sensation in the half of my body being affected STOPPED and the noise cut.

Now, that could have been quite likely my overactive imagination, it could have been a mild epileptic episode (I dont' have epilepsy, I think), it could have been a bad dinner, or sleep paralysis, but that and the other times something like that have happened it's been VERY different than waking up and thinking "ah shit, here we go again, can't move". Or it could have been SPOOKS! But all of that is merely conjecture, and stick by my stance that I'll find out when I am deceased.

Moving slightly away from the helping bit, just because im interested. Bettie, how have you been able to be so aware of whether what you are experiencing is dream or awake? I have often tried to impose a mental picture of what a room is really like in half awake situations (though nothing like a sleep paralysis thingy, just that half awake when you have been drinking heavily the night before) and my dream reality always seems to make perfect sense at the time. I have 'woken up' in rooms with pillars in them and all sorts that have not just felt like, but actually been my bedroom for the period of time that I was still half asleep, then actually woken up and been very confused.

As I've said in my recent article about paranormal experiences. I'm pretty fucking scepticle. Here are my thoughts on the paranormal...

Orbs: bullshit. These can be caused by digital lens flare (caused by the flash reflecting off the lens because they are so close to each other), dust and even rain drops (I did a recent experiment with rain drops in a forest and got perfect orbs in every shot. Go figure!

Spirit Plasma: As in spirit ghost in images. I have reproduced this many times by simply slowly blowing out smoke while taking a picture.

But your experiences, while there is a very likely chance of them being caused by electro magnetic fields.. there is always the power of the mind.

I suggested the sage for many reasons...

1. Because it has been proven tride and true for me MANY times.

2. Because two of the most amazing Native American Shamans I have ever met and definately two of the most amazing people I have EVER met swore that sage removes anything negative from your the environment that the sage is burn in. This I have used many times to help people with similar odd experiences as you.

3. Because doing something you can believe in that sinks into every single pore of the air gives you mental strength. And mental strength drives away anything.

4. I also suggest just being aggressive. I used to live in a REALLY old house in Oklahoma and everyone in the house (including guests) watched many things happen. The two main things being two children who would run down the hall (seen by my mother who doesn't believe in ghosts and my step fathers family when they stayed up late one night) and an old man who would come in through the garage. The old man was the grandfather of the kids seen. Everyone in the house just seemed to "know" this. We all also "knew" that this old man was an abusive drunk who hated the childrens mother. Before anyone else in the house had seen him I had an encounter with him where he came in the garage door (as he always did for years past me) and seemed angry I was there. I told him "NO!" and he disappeared.

The reason I tell you this is that while others who lived in the house and even just visited the house had major bad experiences with this old man. Once I told him NO! and meant it. I mean truly meant NO MORE.. YOU HAVE NO FUTURE HERE WITH ME.. he never appeared to me again.

The power of US is stronger than anything in this world.

People can sit and give you all the explanations they want for your "mental" or "electrical" condition. But the truth is that until you find somehting you believe in.. it isn't going to work! Please try the sage and try just going through your house being very firm in how you feel about it being there verbally. They have ears, even if those ears are not visible. Above all else, your energy will rise during such an aggresive emotional state and will most likely make the spirits back off. In situations where those spirits didn't back off from me. I simply gathered myself and came on even stronger. In the end... I always win.

Just believe in yourself and the fact that your home should be YOURS!

Well, even though it's a logical way of looking at it, there have been more incidents.

My boyfriend woke up from a dream with scratches all over him.

Our alarm clock went off once and then blew up! There was a small fire sparks were flying everywhere.

We got a new alarm clock and we would set it for the right time and everything- double checked it and everything. We made sure we set it. The next morning the alarm would be turned off.

We put two aluminum folding chairs up, one against the bedroom door the other against the closet door (which leads to the sliding bathroom door and then the bathroom. We thought surely, if anyone was coming in our room to turn off the alarm when the door opened, the chair would crash and we would wake up. We woke up the next morning and found the closet door open, the chair on the floor, and the alarm turned off. The chair by the bedroom door was untouched.

So, even though it could be a sleeping problem/whatever, I have doubts about it.

Wormwood, I have had SERIOUS waking-dream paralysis issues since I was a kid, and it happens when I'm in undue stress or agitation. I also sleep walk, sleep talk, sleep fight, and sleep goof off. Usually that's the solution, but any sort of "ritual" is mostly just to ease the mind and set the mood for "i'm in control". The illogical brain demands pagentry to set the brain to get what it wants, like following a paint by numbers book. Follow the steps to achieve the desired results of the will. I do however have a more that slight belief in spooks, because I've been able to tell the difference between spooky combatants and "oh wait, i'm still asleep but not really". When i am suffering an "attack" I make sure to look at the clock, memorize whatever I can in my surroundings to date and time and relevancy, and when it ends I veryify what I remembered.

I think I agree with W0rmW00d that what you described sounds like a hypnogogic/hypnopompic experience. The "massive weight" you described holding you down and the Sensed Malovent Presence (SMP) is a diagnostic quality of these experiences. I think that I have mentioned before that the Saxon word for this phenomenon was "Mara" (from whence we get the modern "nightmare"). A haunting or poltergeist experience is generally more physical (and often more violent) than feelings of dread experienced when one is near-asleep. If this is what is going on, then regulating your sleeping schedule should be enough to correct it. If you dread going to sleep and the symptoms are brought on by exhaustion, then it becomes something of a vicious cycle.

The only thing you described that does not seem to fit the pattern of hypnogogic/hypnopompic experience is that your boyfriend, ex-wife, kids, et cetera all had similar experiences. This suggests to me that there might be a fault in the electrical wiring near the place where the bed is located... electromagnetic fields are capable of causing vivid hallucinations. I heard of one case in which an electric clock radio on a bedstand magnified this effect and paranormal inestigators were able to "exorcise the haunting" by moving the bed to the other side of the room. If it is a wiring problem, I would suggest calling a qualified electrician pronto; even if it were not for the risk of a house fire, prolonged exposure to electromagnetic fields can lead to severe health problems.

I hope everything sorts itself out for you.

~M.

May I suggest purchasing a smudge stick. Open up the windows and every cabinet and closet. Go from room to room burning the smudge stick (sage stick wrapped in string). As you leave the room, close the door and put salt in the doorway. I suggest starting in the back of the place and working your way towards the front door. Close everything as you go and put salt in windows and doorways to keep it from fleeing back to a room that is clearing out.

Moving the bed is a good suggestion. I also recommend making willow wreaths if you can find a willow tree and hang them in the doorways to the room and over the bed.

Sounds like a waking sleep paralysis to me.
A surprisingly commonly reported complaint to which many hauntings, alien abductions and such have been attributed. What is thought to happen is that you become conscious but are still asleep, as it where, so a nightmare will continue to plague you throughout. Due to the body's own self defence you are paralysed, as when you are dreaming to prevent you acting out your dreams and that is, I think, where the panic comes from.
Victims report a half-sleep state, the feeling of a presence, a weight on their chests, panic and difficulty breathing. It is also often a location based problem, moving house, room etc has been documented to work.
This is obviously a non supernatural assessment, and should be treated as such. If you are going to follow this route of beleif then try stuff that you would usually use to ensure a peaceful nights sleep, lavender oil, maybe eucalyptus to clear airways, loadsa booze or weed. There is better good sleep advice elsewhere on these forums but I couldn't remember where.
This is not to say, of course, that any of the other methods told here wouldn't work, even if it was just a peace of mind thing for you, they could help since what I am describing here is a mental thing. If other suggestions have not worked go to a doctor sleep therapist and describe the problem, it is likely that they will have some suggestions.
Hope that was any help.

I would move everything around, but sadly, we don't own it. It's a rented apartment. I can't change the way things open. The bathroom door slides. I could move the bed and try the rest of your suggestions. I just don't want to piss it off even more than it is.

Perhaps it would be good for you to explain to her how to tell it these things. Explain how to communicate with it.

It sounds like you need to explain to it that it is dead.
Explain that it is your house now.
Explain that it's your body.
Explain that it is your dreams that are being invaded.
Maybe the ghosty just doesn't understand all of that.

After you explain it, you'll know whether or not it's aware of these things. If it knows and doesn't care, try to make a deal with the critter. "You can be spooky when I'm not here" kinda things.

If all of that fails, you can just tell it in no uncertain terms that you want it out of your house and that it absolutely can not stay there any longer. If you get to this point though, be ready to move, because if you piss it off, things will get worse.

Move.
No seriously move the bed.
change the way the door on the bathroom and bedroom open
put a mirror on the wall between the two and one on the outside of the bedroom and bathroom doors.
Move.
make a line of salt (and perhaps other things) and at the edge of the bed, bathroom door, bedroom door and a zigzag in the hall between the two.
Put fresh flowers in the bathroom and change them every day
find out who died there and go to thier grave and make an offering
visualize a closed door between you and the "noise" when the dream starts
hang around in the bathroom til late and try talking to the ghosty
move to somewhere less haunted by unhappy ghosties (after you are SURE the boyfriends ex's are still alive, you can invite him along)
call a local occult shop and ask for thier prices for ghost assessment and removal
call the national ghosty people and ask if they can come assess and remove/contain the ghosty.
Move.
