Though I don't necessarily blame ALL people for putting weight on their
self, there are some that have a problem with it. My mom is an example.
In her younger years, my grandma used to starve and fast her so that she
would reach the "ideal weight." This eventually contributed to her current
diabetes for her body began to produce more sugar than needed. So not only
does she have a weight problem, it's harder for her to fight it since she
has arthritis and has to eat to keep her sugar levels in good condition.
I'm one of those few former obese people that worked their ass off to
obtain a healthy weight. Nearly two years ago, I was over 210 lb and could
barely fit a size 16 for most women's clothing. Now I'm 5'7 and 155 lb
(maybe a few more or less) and down to the size range of 10 to 15 (those
really small 15's)...my overall average size being 12's. I think I'm at a
good weight - I'd be considered perfect a decade or so ago, but there are a
few pounds I plan to lose. I'm happy at where I am at now, but would be
even more happy to get down to about 145 lb. It was hard to get the
determination to lose weight, but I did it. One method included a special
diet, but for most of the time, it included watching what I ate.
I do think obesity is an issue, but if people want to be obese, that's
fine. Some can't help it, but there are others I think who can. It's not
easy, but it can be done.

Anya: Back when I actually had time and access to equipment, when I was in
high school, I was a size 14, and a muscular 180 lbs. My ideal weight was
160.
Soooo, anyway, it's an endless cycle for some people. Stress produces
cortisol, which contributes to weight gain, which causes more stress, which
causes more cortisol, which causes more weight gain...etc, etc...
Some days, I would kill to look as good as I did back then. I had really
nice shoulders and everything.
But then came college, and more stress, and a lot of work, and sexist
fuckers who wouldn't let me use the weight room, and the freshman 15 every
year...fun stuff.
It's been a slow decline, but I love the fact that my pants are looser now.
:p
The big problem is, though, in order to lose weight, people have to find
new ways of channelling stress, being able to afford healthy food, having
the time to actually exercise, and being able to love themselves no matter
what they look like. It really is an uphill battle of Sysiphus
proportions.
