Two Girls and a Guy
starring Robert Downey Jr. Heather Graham Natasha Gregson Wagner How NOT to handle polyamory.
In order to view this movie, you have to suffer Robert Downey Jr. acting like a fuckwad, but in this case, it's in character with his portrayal of Blake, a man who has two girlfriends. These two women meet one day, intending to surprise their boyfriend after he's away on a business trip. In the course of reacting to the surprise of discovering that he had sworn fidelity and true love to each of them, they bond. They lay in wait for him, and then tear into him with accusations and demands for an explanation, of course he can give no explanation. He is an actor and used to playing a part, on stage or off, and so believes his lies and lives in a world based in unreality. The two girls, Carla and Lou, continue to bond as he is trying to make sense of the tangle he has woven. When he approaches them, Lou is very much on the offensive, while Carla seems to have no sense of what is really going on. Carla goes off with Blake and "has a moment" with him. When she goes to make a phone call, she fully expects him to have had a similar moment with Lou. He doesn't, in fact, they talk about the situation, and nothing else. Later, Lou makes the suggestion of making it work with the three of them involved. Carla admits to infidelity, and Lou admits to infidelity, as well as being bisexual. Lou leaves, giving Carla her number, wishing to remain friends. Carla stays with Blake. This isn't so much an entertaining movie, as an illustration of the question of what constitutes love, honesty and fidelity. I had the feeling at the end of the movie that Blake and Carla weren't ready for what Lou had suggested, and I think that Lou pretty much got left out of the picture after that. I thought it was a shame, as she seemed to be open and reasonable (once she got over her anger) while the other two remained clueless. A good movie for anyone who has ever thought about a nonmonogamous relationship.
