Humor: Pagans in Junoir High |
Posted by
fallenangel101 on Tuesday, January 17, 2006 - 12:21 AM PST
ok--im in the 8th grade and hav been a pagan for about 1 year--tho i hav been studying the reliogion fro over 3. the other day i went to school wearing a pentagram neclace and belt buckle. i hav only 1 friend who is a pagan at my school. wen the teachers started getting bitchy about our cloths and saying that wicca is not a religion, we stood up for ourselves and spoke our minds saying that if they allow christianity in school---then they hav to allow all religions.
neither of our parents know that we r pagans due to the fact that they also think of it as a cult or that it is not a religion. we ended up with detention and had no one on our side to help us with a patition that we started stating that if one religion is allowed--then so should others..we got 1 signature. we stil hav not found a way to make people realize that we r not a cult and that we just want to live in peace. some1 plz help us!!
(from Ms. Bitch A.K.A. callei)

one thing you can try, if you are serious about freedom of religion and all that, is to go to your local wicca/pagen/witchcraft/spooky store and ask them about any meetings or groups that accept kids and then go to those meetings and ask those people for help and support.
think supernaturally, act locally.

Well... Not to be rude, but... Did you have the "patition" you sent around proofread? You will generally get more respect to your cause if you seem to know what you're talking about; tho tahts juz my opininion.
I feel for your cause, and I think it's terrible that you feel discriminated against. Once you get into high school things should look up.

It really all depends on where you live and what the people are like in that area. Demographics my friends. I grew up in a town where none of that was truly accepted. You might find a few kids who will, but more than likely you'll be shunned even in high school. Wait until college, then things will be better. Correct spelling and grammar can help get the writer there faster. |

And by the time the poster gets into college he or she will most likely have realized that it doesn't matter and be quiety whatever he or she is without being bothered by others or doing any bothering. |

If it weren't for the other egregious typos in this post, I would have assumed that "ju-noir high" was a sophisticated goth joke. But then, I also like to believe that reality television is the latest expression of dadaism and something of an intellectual put-on, so there we are.
As for the premise (if you listen closely, you might just be able to make out the sound of Mono taking a deep sigh and shaking his head in an expression that falls somewhere between pity and disgust)...
You need to streamline more than your spelling here. Your argument needs to be cleaned up as well. Yes, Wicca is a religion that is recognised by the US armed forces (see: www.apologeticsindex.org/w02.html for resources), but not by the President of the United States (see: http://www.religioustolerance.org/boy_arm2.htm for a reference to this statement). Paganism, on the other hand, is not a religion. It is a descriptor. I can say that I am a gentile or a heathen, and it tells you what I am NOT, but not what I am. Keep your references consistent.
The assumption that "...if they allow christianity in school---then they hav (sic) to allow all religions" is untrue. State and federal law does not HAVE to allow for the recognition or accomodation of anyone. Welcome to the world. And, strictly speaking, Christianity is NOT allowed free expression in public schools under federal law as this would be a violation of the principle of the separation of church and state as it has been interpreted in the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment of the US Constitution (see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Separation_of_church_and_state for an overview of this principle and how it has been applied).
It is neither legal nor desirable that we should allow free expression of all religions in public schools (see: http://www.venganza.org/ This is the homepage for the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster; a reductio ad absurdum of what you are proposing). If you are more concerned with expressing your religious convictions than getting an education, I would recommend that you get out of public school altogether and join a private school where your beliefs take precedence... except for the fact that you stated that you did not wish to belong to a cult.

mono only you could get away with a statement like this.
what with the grimness of the "plot" and thr grittiness of the character speech, i was guessing hyper-realism/filme noir too. but at thesame time there is a strong element of absurdism that spacks of surrealism to me. |

Re: Film Ju-Noir by Monolycus on Jan 19, 2006 - 06:27 PM (User info | Send a Message) | It's way too scripted and contrived to be considered vérité, and not moody enough to be noir. What else except an intellectual joke do you call a situation where a person is given a cash prize to eat bugs... but not as much cash as the host gets per episode for telling them to do it? Cynical and surreal spells dadaism to me. |

Re: Film Ju-Noir by callei on Jan 19, 2006 - 07:18 PM (User info | Send a Message) http://http:// | I am sorry Mono, I was unclear. I was speaking about the post rather than the tv show. As i have never seen the show in question, i cant argue its dadaism, but knowing your background i would bet you are right about it.
I turned on the TV recently. Martha Stewart was on. Talking about linen closets with labels. seriously. that was about the most unreal thing to me. She used a mangle in the basement. I am not making this up. I would put that up against the weirdness of any bug eating show, not that i could handle a bug eating show playing on my TV.
Ever.
i wonder if we could get martha to teach teenagers to eat bugs. I think i would PAY to see that...
" now we hold the spider by its back legs only. That way the head it displayed to its best advantage. now remember that rum sauce i talked about before? If not, its in my book "more bloody minded comercialism caged under the misnomer of better living". YOu can find it at Walmart.

Re: Film Ju-Noir by Monolycus on Jan 19, 2006 - 07:31 PM (User info | Send a Message) | Oh! The post... yeah, that's pure cinéma vérité. Raw, unpolished... I can almost see the camera wobbling as it was being typed. Reminds me of an old 1960's documentary I saw once about a snake handling cult in West Virginia. Mmmm. Smell the Americana.
I'm actually jazzed about the Martha Stewart Hunting and Gathering Hour, though. Hopefully, I can get one of her licensed termite sticks for the next time I am entertaining. Incidentally, she is the spokescreep for K-Mart, not Walmart. I almost didn't mention this, but then I thought that nitpicking went well with the basic theme we were exploring. |
