Mistress Manners: Grow Up |
Posted by
callei on Friday, December 05, 2003 - 12:11 AM PST
This one goes out to all the moderators out there. Grow the fuck up, or opt the hell out. ITs embarassing to see someone only moderate comments on thier "friends" article, and fail to do thier job on any of the others. Its embarassing to see someone, no matter what thier comments are, get twited EVERY TIME. Its embarassing to see articles get 2 scores only; a 5 and a 1. Its embarassing to have a moderator on the warned list.
Moderation isnt there for you to work out your petty greivences, needs for power nad control, or forward your political agenda. You werent asked to keep the "purity" of shmeng, or "protect" shmeng or its readers, from anything. You were asked to think about the comments in relation to the article, not play favorites, and dedicate some real time to it every day or so.
The moderator wars were both funny and expected. As was the total lull afterwards. Even this cronism and self angrandizement was expected. We had hoped that it wouldnt happen, but didnt believe that it wouldn't. We had expected it to die down or go away completely by now when you all realized that your scores are effected by what you do.
You are not immune to Karma people. Refusing to participate, not acting if you will, is still an action, and is still visable to Karma. Acting only on behalf of self and one's cronies, is visible to Karma. Trying to silence others, get back at others, or making uninvoled people pawns in your games with the other moderators is visible to Karma.

Now I understand that this has a very serious tone, however this is not applicable to me so I don't feel weird or guilty for saying this: I nominate "power nad control" to be added to Callie's typos. It's just gold.

Re: A Nomination. by callei on Dec 05, 2003 - 05:46 AM (User info | Send a Message) http://http:// | ya know, two other people looked at this and neither of them even noticed. I guess, just as we are all used to Squid spelling "you" "yoo", people are used to me spelling "and" as "nad".
I would (here comes the excuse part) have used my spell checker, but my dictionary erased it self again. It does it every 2000 words or so. And i was too lazy to go get the disc from where ever i left it last time
And you are right, that is a new high in my world of typos. |

I don't know why I thought that, but I did. Yea it was classic it fit so well for a typo. |

Re: A Nomination. by dead-cell (Tarant-9@stribmail.com) on Dec 05, 2003 - 09:14 PM (User info | Send a Message) | I thought Callei meant the word "nad" too. Thought she was calling them dick heads, or punching at thier egotism. Never thought to rearange the letters. The pharse is still affective by the way. |

Re: A Nomination. by Anya on Dec 07, 2003 - 09:14 PM (User info | Send a Message) http://kirashi.envy.nu | Not sure. It sounds like it'll be something in stock, though, once the population gets out of control. Something has to keep those gonads in check if someone overdoes viagra or does away with birth control... |

I had a vibe, for some reason, that it'd eventually go to such struggles. This isn't an attack on shmeng, but just what I know of what one or two megalomaniacs can do to mess something big up (not singling anyone out, just going by what callei posted). It's like someone pushing down one domino to make the whole pile fall. I'm glad that someone in the Pantheon spoke out on the situation. Kudos to callei for speaking out.

*spits out her drink* by Anya on Dec 07, 2003 - 10:18 PM (User info | Send a Message) http://kirashi.envy.nu | Callei having power nads? That just sounded wrong, lol. I mean she has more balls than most men, but eish...didn't know it was that literal.
*ducks before callei thwacks her*
But in all seriousness, I almost feel bad for callei right now...most of these comments are dedicated to her typo "power nad". |

I am glad this came up today... for a new member that has only been on the site a couple of weeks, who has posted thought provoking and well thought out comments has been moderated completely out into the forums... it saddened me greatly

Is Devin Karma?
Anyway: Moderators are asked to moderate down the comments that are applicable to a topic. Given the debatability of some comments, they get rated higher or lower based on the bias of the moderators themselves. hence, moderator wars. But it's not like there's a tutorial or standard guide for moderators on what exactly to kill - I mean, the obvious troll shit goes straight down the tube to rating -1 - but when somebody comes up with an incoherent rant that goes on for paragraphs, it gets moderated up to godly level simply by the opinions of moderators rather than quality of content that would otherwise bring such an ill-thought response down to mere flamebait.
I thought the idea of ratings was silly in the first place - Why not merely have senior moderators who delete actually irrelevant comments that are suggested upon by other moderators or forum watchdogs?

Hmmm, interesting point... by Anya on Dec 07, 2003 - 09:30 PM (User info | Send a Message) http://kirashi.envy.nu | I actually mentioned that to Devin earlier today...the mods are still human. Sometimes our minds are too complexed for our own good - even in the greater masses from time to time. Some things are very difficult to judge as "intelligent" or "lucid" since everyone has their own concept of what is intelligent and what is not. I'd still not be surprised if there was favoritism going on in the mod wars, but I can see the point being made. Maybe we (or the proper people) can think of ideas and/or examples to make what is "brilliant" and what is "twitty (apart from the obviously obnoxious trolling)"...and things like that. It's all up to Devin, either way.
There's other members who mentioned how it'd be more fair for everyone to moderate, which has its own set of pro's and con's. I think that Devin should be able to deal with Karma like Alan Greenspan deals with the Economy: he should make the tweaks that he sees best. After all, it's his site. :)
I'll stop my rambling here...just had some of my own input since Comedian made an interesting point. I don't know how else the Karma scripts work apart from the obvious.
Blessings,
Anya
