Disillusion: Brand Disloyalty |

I came here on a mission. This morning I put on my Lip service jacket and had a great realization. or at least it was for me. I decided it would probably be worthy of posting on shmeng. Only moments ago I was hit by a wave of inferiority, and almost turned away from that ominous post button, images flashing through my mind from "from the eyes of a newbie" (whatever it's called). I've faced my fears. This is what I have to say...
This morning, like I said, I put on my Lip Service™ jacket. Yes, I have read the goth commandments, and I know that many would be disgusted with me right now. but you know? I just don't care. I realized that rather than buy certain brands because they are cool; it's become trendy to not buy certain brands because they are supposedly uncool. Goths have found it all uber cool to have brand un-loyalty. This is really stupid if you ask me.
I love my Lip Service™ jacket, in fact I'm wearing it right now, and frankly I don't care what lip service started out as or who their customer base primarily is. I also buy Hot Topic ™, if a certain shirt or skirt suits me. Oh my god, that's soooo not goth! Whatever. I go to malls, I go to thrift stores, I buy what I like where i see it, and I don't have brand loyalty or disloyalty.
Editors note: I am posting this because I just couldn’t let the opportunity pass to say "Boycott and Denial are different than hating it because it is cool".
It is not that one brand is cool and one is not with the so-called Uber crowd. It's that some people choose to Boycott the mainstreaming of a counterculture. Or its sour grapes because the mainstream stores don’t carry their size, tastes, or fit their budget. For some, it’s the fact that people that used to work for Gap now work for Hot Topic and there is a certain feel to the clothes that they put out that makes much of them seem like Gap clothes (btw Gap is denigrated because it has convinced people that wearing a Para-military uniform is somehow "cool").

I dont shop at Hot Topic anymore because they rip everything off. I saw a Rainbow Brite remake in there and she's blonde. RAINBOW BRITE HAS ORANGE HAIR!! HELLO! Not only that, everytime I buy something from the store, it falls apart not too long after i buy it. If I DO shop at Hot Topic, It's to buy something small and stupid.and if I BUY CLOTHES from there its from the net. The warehouse version of Hot Topic stuff seems to stay intact better than the stuff you buy from the store. This seems rather odd to me. So you see your assumption that goths don't buy from there because its cool not to, is not totally correct. And just because you're wearing LipService doesn't mean you got it at Hot Topic. I am not just speaking for Hot Topic either. Many people have many different reasons not to shop at certain places, not because its "not cool." If I found something cool at The Gap, I would buy it no questions asked.. but do I like anything in gap...no.

While there are 'uber mobs' that will not shop at certain places for the reasons you mentioned, there are many who will refuse to shop at certain places for other reasons. Keep in mind that everyone has their own tastes. I sometimes window shop at Hot Topic, but as of late, I've found nothing of interest there...except maybe the faery post cards. That and as Sindel probably pointed out, a lot of the clothes do not last long...she is not the only one who warns of that.
I will shop at places like Target and Wal-Mart every now and then...assuming I want simple clothes. I've found nothing in GAP that I like. Not everyone is going to stop shopping at some place because of some fad.
The same could also apply to musicians out there. I do not dislike Britney Spear's music because she is "a slut", I simply do not find her music of my tastes. In turn, I actually listen to some of Madonna, whether she is labeled the same as Britney Spears or not. I'm sure there are many who like the other and not one, neither, or both, though.

What I lvoe is the fact that people buy clothes that have the logo of whatever corporation made the clothes as the primary decal.
Having people pay to advertise your clothing is simply genius. Brilliant. it's like the oil engineer who sold the waste made from producing oil(asphalt) to pave roads with.

very true, there is no reason to buy something because someone tells you to or not to. Just get what you want because it is comfortable. as long as it is regularly washed, ANYTHING is fine. (just OH GAAAAA PLEASE do not wear things that are so small that they pinch the skin on the body so that it becomes apparent that there are fat rolls. that is not comfortable, and if it is... wow,,, what a pain tolerance... )
The only thing to ever do is wear what you want when you want and how you want to wear it.
Just remember, you can go topless if you wanted to downtown. But don't cause any wrecks and remember the rule,, no shirt no shoes no service.
Go for the nice sales where everything is 3 dollars or less and is comfortable... those are the nice ones...
