After living amongst the Amazons of Celestiny and the little ones of the village, Zak knew he'd finally found a place where he belonged. He became aware that his scars from the cruel beating by Minerva had already begun to fade...as have his memories of his former life as her slave.
He hummed softly to himself as he bathed in the river by the village. The early afternoon sun causing his deeply tanned skin to shimmer as the water beaded on it in places. The rushing water began to bring back some of the memories of his childhood...and of his mother.
Although Zak could not recall his mother's name, he remembered her beauty...and the musical sound of her voice. As he caught his reflection in the surface of the water, he realized he had the same hazel eyes and dark raven hair as his mother. The memory of her was leading him dangerously close to tears. Closing his eyes for a moment, he recalled the last words she spoke to him, "Be strong my sweet son, and I will see you in the next world."
The tears began to fall...he could no longer hold them back as he heard those words over and over again in his head. He struck the water with his fists as he remembered when she took her last breath and left him. He was only about twelve years old at her death, and the evil Mistress Minerva had wasted no time in taking him in… and training him in her own ways.
Quickly he shoved those memories deep inside him, and finished up bathing himself. He realized how long he had been in the river, and he was anxious to get back to the hut he shared with several other village slaves. He smiled to himself knowing he was to be serving the Queen of Celestiny this evening.
Walking quickly through the village, he was unaware of how the Mistresses and the slave girls stared at him with admiring smiles on their faces. He had only one thought in his mind as he reached his hut and stepped inside. That thought was that he wanted deeply to impress the Queen with his serve this evening. He hoped that if he impressed her well enough, she might consider taking him as one of her own little ones.
Zak looked through his loincloths for the whitest and most perfect one he owned. As he put it on, he realized his hands were trembling slightly. He tried to calm his nerves as he mentally practiced how he would do his serve. Before he knew it, the time had come to head out to the village fires.
Stepping out of the door of the hut, he felt the cool early evening breeze as it hit his body. Taking in a deep breath, he could smell the sweetness of the Night Blooming Jasmine that grew near the river as the scent wafted through the village. This brought a gentle smile over his lips, as he walked the rest of the distance to the fires.
Settling in near some other little ones, he did not allow himself to fully relax as he was keeping a close watch for the Queen's approach. He waited in a partial kneeling position, with his back to the fires and his head tilted downward slightly. His eyes watching the Queen's hut vigilantly, knowing that at any moment she would emerge.
His waiting was over. Queen Attana had just emerged from her hut. Her long, blond hair flowed gently over her shoulders and down her back. The gentle evening breezes swirled it around a bit as she made her way towards the fires. Zak had to fight hard to keep his nerves somewhat calm as he felt his heart beat quicken at her sight.
