Politics: First Aid (Adventures at a Catholic College Pt. 3) |

There is supposed to be an "ethic of care" at this college. As I have had it explained to me, this involves several things. First, it means everyone is supposed to care about everyone else. Second, it means the school values the student over any political, social, or ECONOMIC gain. Just keep those in mind as I explain what has happened in the past 5 hours.
At about 12:30 AM, I was hanging out in my dorm room, watching X men and talking with friends, waiting for the bread machine to finish it's beautifully-scented work. As the Community Advisor (Carroll's version of an RA) I am expected to be "social and availible"-- so having my door open and an inviting scent wafting out usually fulfills those criteria. I heard a loud thump outside my doorway. Expecting to see nothing more than someone who had dropped a stack of books or other such non-special activity, I just poked my head out the door. There was, instead, one of my residents laying on the hard tile floor, crying so hard there were literally puddles of tears next to her head.
One of my other residents, who happens to be a CNA, was already with the injured student, and was taking care of her. So, upon the request of the CNA, I ran downstairs to the front desk to get an ice pack. Lo and behold, there is no icepack. There is not even a first aid kit. I couldn't believe this at first. A dorm with several hundred students, campus with 1,400 students, and there is not even a first aid kit at the main "Dispatch Desk"? I was bewildered. So, without an icepack, I ran back up the stairs, where the CNA had finally convinced the injured student they should allow the ambulance to be called.
When the ambulance got here, the first-responders and the EMT's had to run up seven full flights of stairs to get to the hallway where this girl was lying. Why? Because there is no elevator in the building. So when they had a girl on a backboard with a C-collar around her neck that had already been given Morphine to get the pain to a "manageable level" they had to carry her down all those stairs. Which could not have been a pleasant experience.
So it is now 4:30 AM. This individual will be back from the hospital in about 30 minutes. I was just called to be informed (by the CNA student) that the girl had fractured her tailbone. This means I will be literally carrying her back up the stairs to her room. However, if this girl wants to go to class, eat, or anything else, those stairs will still be there.
Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but if there is an "ethic of care" at this school, why is there no first aid kit, and why are several hundred of it's students living in a building with no elevator, a four-minute burntime, and a comdemned fire escape? It just doesn't make sense!
Or maybe I missed that sermon

Ah, Collegiate life. I fondly remember recently strolling the halls of the esteemed local liberal arts college and having to dig a 2-inch shard of tequila bottle out of my luckily thick rubber-shod-shoes. Crazy kids.

Don't public (I know, its privately owned, but still) places like that generally have to have handicap access?
But man, that's pretty whacked... No first aid kit... 7 flights of stairs? Sheesh...

It sounds like a pretty bad set up for a dorm. Maybe the person who designed it thought that having only stairs instead of an elevator would allow a daily penance for all the students unconfessed sins, and the condemed fire escape could represent the fires of hell burning those who don't do penance for their sins. It could also explain the lack of available ice for an ice pack. I mean I've heard there isn't any ice in hell. Just a thought.

Are you sure that they just didn't run out of the ice packs and first aid kits? Were there any other emergencies at the college? I'm just curious for maybe it has nothing to do with them not having anything for medical purposes and it could be that the equipment was already being used elsewhere.

maybe they are trying to prove that Catholic "hell on earth" thing? Dont they belive that people must suffer alot to be puer? or am i confusing them with the one of the other quasi-monotheistic people managers?

Okay, to be totally fair: the dorm is a 97 year old building, and not handicap accessable because it falls under the grandfathering of the ADA act.
Beyond that, I'm not sure why the hell there were no first aid kits-- we even called around to the other 3 dorms and there was none...
As an update to this lovely situation, I have been reamed out for not calling the ambulance immediately, even though she was refusing care. I have also been "talked to" about my "propensity to question the administration." I realize every school has it's problems, but REALLY!
