| Fiction: One Step Too Far |

This time the silence had become deadly. Sally sat there not willing to believe that he'd hung up on her. She ran through all the possibilities in her mind. Had Jack's cell phone battery gone dead unexpectedly? Was he in an area that he couldn't get a signal? Was he agonizing on how quickly he could get back in touch with her?
After several attempts to call him back, she realized that he might just not be answering his phone. Then more questions began to run through her mind. Did he think that she'd hung up on him? Did he try to call her back and find the phone to be busy time after time, and decide to turn his off after a few tries?
She called the dispatch phone number and asked the night dispatcher to send a message to her husband's truck. The message was simply, "Jack, please call wife at home." She relaxed a bit and settled into a chair waiting for either the regular phone or the cell phone to ring. The ring never happened.
Reluctantly she called night dispatch again and asked that a message be sent again to his truck. This time the message was even shorter. It said only, "Call wife." Once again, there was no phone call.
It might have been easy enough to pretend that he'd gone to sleep for the night, but she couldn't. There was online satellite tracking of his truck through his company's website. She at first tried to resist the urge to track his movements, but she gave in to her urges and checked where he was. The website showed her that he was still driving.
At first, she was excited when she saw how close to home he was. She thought that maybe he was going to run by the house and give her a hug. Then as she continued watching his trek on satellite, she realized he'd gone around the way home and had already gone too far past to be stopping at home. Now she was really beginning to worry.
Why did she have to keep on after he'd asked her to lay off on the bitching. She wasn't even bitching at him, but when she replayed the conversation over in her head for the hundredth time, she realized that it sure did sound like she was bitching at him. She picked up the phone to call night dispatch for the third time.
When she called, she apologized for being annoying, but told the dispatcher that she needed to send a message to her husband just once more tonight if he didn't mind. The dispatcher seemed very understanding, and typed in the following message to send to the truck: "You were right. Wife was wrong. Phone disconnected on its own. Please call wife back."
There was a small amount of relief in knowing that he'd get the message from her, even if he chose not to call her back. She browsed through suicide-themed sites on the Internet, as she waited to hear from her husband. Yet again, the phone never rang.
It was time to try to sleep, so she lay on the couch to stare at the television. Sleep never came. Thoughts of laying in the bath tub and calmly breathing in the water came to mind. She headed to the bathroom and ran herself a bath. As she entered the water, she laid back until her hair was floating up around her and the world went quiet. Then she began to fantasize of a dark-haired man who wasn't afraid to take care of her.
As she slipped deeper into the fantasy, she felt hands running over her body...down her arms...over her tummy...down to the neglected spot between her legs. Her breathing quickened, and her heart beat faster as she felt fingers inside her...caressing her gently to orgasm. She cried out a name, but as she said it...she forgot it. She opened her eyes, expecting to see another person there with her, but there was no one there but herself. She looked down, and saw that her own hands were what brought her such pleasure. Almost heartbroken, she got out of the bathtub and wrapped herself in a robe.
As she moved into the living room, Sally let her mind drift to certain things she must do. She started to cry, and then pushed back the tears just before they came.
She walked around the house, thinking of how many projects have been left undone lately. Looking at Jack's photo and kissing it, then looking towards the kitchen as she set the photo back down.
As she walked into the kitchen, what must be done had now become obvious to her. She walked over to the counter and looked at the knives in the wooden holder behind the cutting board. Then she chose one of the carving knives, and weighed it carefully in her left hand.. She looked at the knife in her hand, and then up at the door Jack will walk in through come morning. Silently she sat down in the chair at the kitchen table and patiently she waited for his arrival.
As the early morning light trickled in through the kitchen window, Sally heard the sound of a diesel engine outside in the driveway. She stood up, straightened her hair, and tried to smile as she waited for the door to open.
The key turned in the lock, and she realized the knife was in her hand still. Quickly she put her left hand behind her back. The door opened and in walked Jack.
He looked at her without saying a word as he sat his bags on the kitchen floor. She moved over to him and tried to kiss him hello. He flinched a bit, but allowed her to kiss him.
She shut her eyes tightly and took a deep breath. Then she spoke, "I have something to say to you, even if you have nothing to say to me."
Jack looked at her with disgust, and said, "Well go ahead and say it. It's not like I can stop you from talking."
A small eerie smile began to play upon Sally's lips as she spoke, "Okay then, here it is."
She cocked her head to the right slightly, then stepped forward as she brought her hand with the knife round forward...driving the knife straight into Jack's heart.
He looked at her as his hands flew to his chest, the knife embedded deeply there within. Not a word escaped his lips as he collapsed to the floor.
Sally smiled at him sickly as he lay there dying in a growing pool of his own blood. She spoke softly to him, "Now my darling, you will never have to listen to me again. Sleep well."
He took his hands from his chest and reached up to her, as if pleading for help. Then his body twitched violently, and he was gone.
Sally breathed a sigh of relief, and spoke aloud to herself, "One project...complete."

That was really good, Starlight... at first, I thought she was going to kill herself in front of him... I didn't think she'd attack him...

Very very nice. I especially enjoyed the part when she was in the tub. I shouldn't read stuff like that while at school(get a little bothered), but boy oh boy does it make me have a better day. The murder was a surprise, I was hoping for a happy ending, but of course life is not like that. There truly does not seem to be a happy ending for everyone.

Whoah! That caught me totally off guard!!
Talent! I enjoyed that, a whole hell of a lot. Short sweet, emotionally charged in a disturbed sort of way, and eerily logical in a twisted fashion. Mad props...

That reminds me...I have a few things I need to do when I get home.
A very well written story. The end murder kept it from turning into another cliche housewife story. It moved along at a good pace, and I enjoyed the whole thing very much.
Great job! Now write some more!
