Articles: Almost Porn

Smut
Has anyone ever noticed how horrible everything on television has become? Commercials on television have gone from simply explaining what a product does and how much it costs at your local grocer, to orgasmic, horny thirty-second almost porn short films. Regular programming has also become appalling to me. How every show these days have to deal with sex and violence is just horrid. Whatever happened to the clean television? As I watched television one evening during the prime-time programs I saw a commercial that would drive anybody wild. The commercial was for Herbal Essences shampoo. As a woman was in the shower she began to tell the consumer about the product, but as she did, every other word was filled with the sound of her coming very near to an orgasm. We all know that mere shampoos cannot cause this type of arousal unless the user is doing something else to themselves in the shower. How is it possible that the FCC has allowed this to pass by?

Also, television programs have gotten completely out of hand. Programs like Sex and the City is a good example of sex on television. The violence is depicted in The Sopranos. It is not, however just HBO that is providing violent shows and sexual themes. ABC, CBS, UPN, and FOX also put in their share of despicable programming. It is not to say that I do not watch television, but the way they have this available to children is nauseating.

I baby-sat for a little girl once who was only six years old and was allowed to watch Happy Gilmore, Billy Madison, along with any rated "R" movies she wanted to watch. My jaw completely dropped at her father's words about her being permitted to watch these Hollywood productions. Whatever happened to Howdy Dudy or Tex Avery cartoons? How about Sesame Street? Why is there not clean cut programming out there for children? I do not promote Disney for children anymore. That is taking me off on a tangent though, so I will leave that for another day.

So for all to see I have wrote this to express my views to the world (or at least the world of Shmeng). Television is going to hell in a hand basket, and it has slowly been going that way every since Lucy and Ricky shared a bed for the first time on television. Let us not accept this, let us refuse to accept it! Let us rise up against it and leave the porn in the Adult Supercenters, and clean up what children have the access to. Come with me, and we will make a trek to a place somewhere closer to Pleasentville.

I'm afraid I'm going to have to disagree with yoo on this one.

I disagree with all forms of censorship. Any society in which censorship exsists is oppressed! I disagree strongly with the puritanical ethics of the US media, repressing sexuality is the root of nearly everything that's fucked-up about sexuality.

What's worse is that the issue of sex is swept under the table whereas violence is accepted? Which is really worse for a person to do, have sex or kill people?

Don't get mee wrong, I hate television as well but only because it's the plug-in propaganda-pumping zombie producer!

television shows are just there to keep you busy between commercials. the point of tv IS the commercials.
Ever seen a Japanese commercial?
Ever seen a European commercial?
If you want sex-lite tv, watch older tv shows or movies? they merely use inuendo for the sex, but most do show the violence.
Alot of TV is based around best selling books, not the books themselves per se, but the feel and content of the book. so the fact that romance novels are one of the best selling genres (showing that sex and violence are topics desired by people enough to spend thier money on it) might be a big influence on what gets made into TV shows. The other really big genre is the "Action/adventure/spy" genre, full of sex and violence. SO if most people that consume "media" want sex and violence, that is what they are going to give us.
Most classic books have lots of sex and violence, along with all sorts of other things. Ever read Hamlet? How about 13 tales? ever read the words to the Carmina Burana?

But seriously TV shows are there to keep you busy between commercials. the tv business is actually advertizing, not making moralist uplifting television. That is what public TV stations were for, before they lost thier financing.

My own personal take on the "sexual revolution" of television, is that's it's the healthiest thing to happen to the medium. Like Squid said, what's up with sex is wrong, but here's all the bloody mutilations you can handle? Sex is a wonderful thing and the less we put it in the category of the taboo the better. The more we can put it in a place where the children can see it and gain at least some opinion on it the better. If we continue to make sex this horrible taboo thing, one there will continue to be more sexually scarred people who hve no idea that sex is just sex. And the more sex on TV/in movies will be outrageous and tainted. While personally I can be a bit sophisticated in my tastes. I was truly pleased to see a show (I can't remember which) in which sex just happened to two of the characters. They loved each other, they ended up in a private place, they had sex. They felt a little funny about it later so they spoke about it in a mature fashion, and the show didn't revolve around the fact that they had banged. Before this point, the vast majority of the sex you hear about on television has been a) rape, b) generally unhappy, ie: cheating, sneaking around, near rape, blackmailed sex, etc... or c) hidden sex; like it was dirty and they couldn't have it openly, even to themselves.
Now don't get me wrong, I don't think we should sit our grade school kids down to a porn fest when they go to sex ed class, but a good hardcore porn isn't anymore informative than a candy bar is nutritional. It's got sex and that's all. Even the cheesiest sit-com has the oportunity to deal with sex in a plot driven fashion instead of as either a taboo subject or a blatant show of the facts. As kids, they should get the facts from teachers or their parents. As adults we know how it works, we just want to see someone else doing it (porn). The facts are rarely enough to educate a person in anything other than the most basic sciences though, and even then anecdotal evidence often helps set the information.
As for commercials, if a woman is taking her sensuality and exhibiting it in a commercial for shampoo, why is that actually bad? Is it because you think someone might get horny? Is it because it offends you sensibilities? Or is it a simple kneejerk reaction, parroting a party line you were taught as a child? Think on that for a moment. We were taught as children that sex was to be neither seen nor heard. Quiet missionary position in the dark behind locked doors between adults who are barely aware enough of their own activities to be consenting. To the far right extreme of this ideaology lies the Xians who have been known to say it a sin to get aroused by the act of procreation...excuse me but what?
If we allow people to exhibit their most base arousal (I'm not saying nude and going at it on the park bench) and show that they are in fact excited, perhaps the path of courting will become a wee bit less coated in brambles and broken cobbles. If we make it safe and allowed to effectively say "I'm horny", to admit to our arousal, won't it allow more people the tools to actually deal with that rather than leaving them to simmer and get all twisted up about it? How much easier would our lives be if you could go into a club/bar/concert/library/church and when you meet someone be able to clearly state "I have no idea who you are or what I will feel about you later, but you smell really good to my sexual hind brain (or something a little less scientific, but just as clearly stated)? Some of the best friends I've had have been aware enough of their own sexuallity to say things like "I'm not here to get laid, if you still want to talk that fine, but if you're horny I think she/he over there is looking for some action". I'll admit freely when I was on the market I didn't have the balls to be that clear about sex, and you know what? I missed alot of great opportunities, both for sex and friends. If I'd known one of my girlfriends back in ninth grade had only been interested

Pleasentville is boring!

You listed one reason why I stopped watching tv, too much mindless, unintelligent programming...however, I’m sorry but I too disagree with you here. There are many channels with “family friendly” and or “kid friendly” programming, believe me, it’s out there. - If you think American TV is bad, go to England or Japan. You’ll be in for a shocker.

- Parents shouldn’t plant their children infront of the tv 24/7, that’s a obvious mistake they make.

It’s NOT the FCC’s or the television companies’ responsibilities to decide what our children view, that responsibility belongs to the parent’s or guardians...and sooner or later, the real world which you so desperately have fought to keep away from those kids will hit them like a ton of bricks. It’s best you teach em about how the world truly is at a younger age, let them know how to handle such content, hold the ability to tell the difference from fantasy and reality and then allow them to view the “adult” content when you decide is feasible.

- Again, see Japanese culture and the content their children are allowed to view. It’ll blow you away. The father of that child decided what is appropriate for her and I doubt she will be “corrupted” by those movies.

I am NOT another child’s father. “Cleaning” up one medium of art (yes as trashy as tv is it’s still a art, if you think about it, everything you do is a art) to “protect” our children from “adult content” will spread like a virus to our books, our videogames, our museums, everything we trea all to the rest of the millions (possibly billion?) of people which enjoy that type of content.

See censorship is no different than having some communist bastard waltz right into my home and regulate what I view at gunpoint.

Censorship of the arts = totalitarianism, it must be stopped before we lose control of it.

If life was given a rating by the MPPA it would be NC sure. I will not let that happen, that is not fair at-17.

Also, don’t like those “Girls Gone Wild” infomercials, do what I do and turn off the tv.

When Congress, Ministers and Censors ban SEX, only Congress, Ministers and Censors will have SEX!!! SEX is good for Business and 99.999% of all other lifeforms on this world: how can I disagree with what works?

I must disagree with very nearly every word of this.
Censorship is what's WRONG with the children in this country. not the other way around.
kids having sex kicking the crap out of each other and such, is NOT due to them seeing it on TV or some shit like that. It's due to the fact that it's forbidden to them. Kids REBEL. meaning they do what they're told or brought to think is WRONG or TABOO or FORBIDDEN. They don't do it cuz they see it. They do it cuz they DON'T see it. You can't properly teach someone about someting if you're afraid to let them see it or know of it's existance. And if you don't teach them, they won't know how to look at it, or deal with it, or properly handle it so as to avoid things like getting pregnant at 15, or such things. I mean no offense to you in this but you truly have a lot to learn about where kids get their habits and such. TV is a VERY small part of it. Most of it comes, believe it or not, from their PARENTS. Plain and simple. Whether it's cuz they see their parents do it, or cuz their parents told them they're not allowed, it's on the parents. not TV or some mgazine or some radio show. if they do what they see or hear there, you should have taught them better than that. In the end, it's the parent's responsibility.

Most of what I have to say has already been APTLY said by others already :)
Since lucy and ricki shared a bed? Goodness gracious get MY nickers in a wad...I mean come on...sex and television go hand in hand like jeffery dahmer and powerdrills. Sex has always been present, since the dawn of time. Why be ashamed? It IS taboo and that's why kids are "obsessed" with it. I was sheltered from everything when I was a kid, and when I finally emerged into "real life" it was like a punch in the face, and simply interacting with strangers or bein in a room full of strangers gave me full on panic attacks. I WISH it was such an easy and free subject when I was a kid, or I wouldn't be as freakishly withdrawn as an adult.
As for kids cartoons glorifying sex and violence, uh, am I the only one that remembers foghorn leghorn womanizing all the hens in the chickenyeard? Or the many hillarious anvils dropped on unsuspecting heads? Or watching old daffy duck cartoons where he'd find out his GIRLFRIEND was "laying an egg" and get all staggering drunk with a jug of moonshine and smoke cigars?
Of course shampoo isn't "orgasmic" most of the hair products out there don't even do what they SAY they will do, orgasm or not...I just want clean healthy hair...and burgers aren't healthy, and the right brand of beer won't make you cool, and you can't REALLY fly with those little cool model airplane toys, and if I play Turok 4 and stubb my toe and bleed dinosaurs won't come launching out of the bushes to eat my head (thank HELL!! dinosaurs...*shudder*). It's Advertainment...it's to make you laugh, because happy people by products that have funny/sexy commercials.
I don't want bland television. I don't want television void of sex and explosions. If I'm paying for HBO I want to see one of the sopranos dump someone in a river. I watch crank yankers so I can see naked puppets saying hillariously politically incorrect things. Does it mean I'll do it? NO!
As for our "darling children" they aren't idiots, impressionable, yes, but idiot, no. The demon box isn't a babysitter, nanny, or school teacher. If someone is sitting their kids in front of it from the time they get out of school to bedtime, without supervision, and their kid is fucked up it's their fault. You reap what you sew. America is by FAR the most sexually backwater country in the world. Know why the sex industry is so huge here? Because it's FORBIDDEN, it's TABOO, it's DANGEROUS in a puritanical right wing conservative "save the idiots from themselves" society.
Sex is just sex. JUST SEX...it's a great thing. It makes you healthy, it makes you happy, it releases "euphoria" type hormones and is fantastic exercise for every muscle group. It's just...sex!
And remember...the beatles once were the devil and elvis presley's hip shaking was the most obscene thing the public had ever seen in his time. That simply hip shaking drove girls NUTS...why? Because it was "sexual" and sex was even more taboo back then than it was now...it was hidden, missionary, and girls didn't "get off".
Something to think about. Then and now..is there really anything totally different? The type of "provocation" perhaps, but the mind set? Nope...scary that a mind set hasn't evolved in half a centry over something as simple as good old fashioned bumpin uglies.

(and yes, that herbal essences commercial is something...i dont know how they can acctually air that.)

They have the classes at school that teach you about sex, it's necessary to learn so kids can have sex safely, atleast. If your kid is going to have sex would you not want him or her to be comfortable talking to you about it? I mean parent's are always saying "you can talk to me about anything" but then when you try they give you that "why are you even THINKING this" look. Then they tell you it's wrong. Would you not want him or her to take the necessary precautions? And they're getting a new sesame street character (if they haven't already) who has AIDS, to teach children about the disease. It's unrealistic to assume that teenagers won't have sex just because they don't see it on tv. And as for violence, I never watched tv when I was younger and I was seriously a violent child. I grew out of that though. Just because you don't see sex on tv or hear it in the music you listen to or whatever does not mean that you will be completely shielded from it, you still have those feelings and it's up to the individual on what is done about those feelings.

This article was addressing the fact that children have easy access to things of this nature. They should have some time in their lives to enjoy themselves without knowing how corrupt our world is. Many of us enjoyed that, should they not have the same opportunity? We may still watch it, but what the children watch should be monitored.

its kinda funny to see that most of the people saying "protect us from the awful TV" are young and those saying "turn the F*ing thing off" are older.
I wonder if we should listen to the kids? Maybe all they want to see is Seaseme Street and cereal commercials. Maybe we shouldnt make them learn about the dangers of drugs, violence, sex, people, news, or any of the other things on 'big kid' TV.

I know TV made a huge impact on me. I was 'forced' to watch Monty python, Good Neighbors, Butterfly, Father Ted, and other British comedy all through my childhood. I was 'forced' to watch Nova, the occational ballet or opera, and yan can cook. My parents set the TV to PBS and just sat with me there for whole hours some times.

This has had lasting impact, in that i read alot of British books, still watch BBC america, and tend to ignore my tv when it wants to show something other that Discovery Science.

I dont hear about new household cleaners, the best deals on new cars, what diapers are cheaper, all those things that you can buy for 19.95 if you call in the next 10 minutes, or anything.

the other thing i was forced to watch was star trek next generation when it started. But the damamge had already been done since my parents regularly let me sci-fi books that i choose myself. And yes i am still a huge proponent of the space program.

Let the kids have what they want then, PBS. break off the buttons/knobs that let you change from the discovery chanel or PBS. give them clean, educational tv.

And if you are reading this and want to stop being bombarded with sex and violence on TV, then do it for yourself. Change the channel to PBS or Discovery or something similar. Watch the REAL robot wars (people make robots and run them in up against each other). Watch cooking shows since most of you arent going to learn this necessary skill at home (you know i am right, opening a can does not dinner make). Watch something about the space program, life under the sea, how clouds are made, world news, the disgusion of the latest best selling books, or any of the hundreds of non sex and violence shows that are on EVERYDAY.

mom cant protect you from what you do behind her back.....

I'm more disturbed by the steriotypeing and hypocrisy. Will and Grace is probably the most despicable exaples of how gay people act I've ever seen. Mtv can show a rap artist half naked, or talking about shaving there pubic hair, but a rock band can't have falling rubble from a building during a FUCKING EARTH QUAKE IN L.A. because its reminiscent of the 9/11 attacks. No cares if slim shady dresses up as bin laden though. Television is pure corporate Shit. Those Nazi fucks will be put to a stop soon enough, because ppl will get tired of this B.S.ing, and create a revolution.

Yase! I have an incredibly short amount of time to type this but I just wanted to say that I agree with you whole heartedly. I am all for freedom of expression. I do not want censorship of ANY kind. How bout some originality though? Is it too hard to ask for some interesting content? I was thinking these same thoughts when a friend of mine msged me with the typical "OMG OMG OMG!!!" and told me to turn on MTV2 to see Christina Aguilerasdjhasdhj however you spell it's new video. All I could think of afterwards was "...If I wanted to see porn, I could of typed it into google."

Folks I don't think this is a battle of censorship. I think it's a battle to get rid of the blatant exploitation of the forbidden fruits of tv. Like I said. I enjoy the random sex, drugs, and violence, but when it surrounds me and is all I can ever see when I turn on the tv...it gets frustrating.

Well, I can't leave this without saying that in case you haven't noticed, your own user name has to do with sex...sex is indeed a very important part of our lives...in the matter of children having access to porn, or erotic, it does not bother me at all...if they do it’s their parent's responsibility...there is a time schedule...there are porn blocs on the internet "parental advisory" is not just for show...
For what I am concerned I've lost my virginity very soon, and I'm as healthy as can be...and so is my sex life...I've never needed no FCC to educate me...I thank the Gods for living in Europe...American conservadorism is just the face of the catholic hypocrisy...it's not needed...they can go now...

Well...seems like it's time for Liquid to post his opinion about something...fun.

Ever wonder why so many people get shot in major cities as compared to farmlands? yes, population density factors in heavily...but there's something else that people don't notice...Responsibility. Those that can accept a firearm as a tool rather than a weapon are infinitely less likely to commit a violent crime as someone who never sees a gun used for anything but an impliment of authority and murder. Believe me, I've lived in manhattan AND kentucky...I've seen both sides.
Ah, but yes...he does have a point!
Sex is the same thing.
If we're raised so that sex is hidden...sex is taboo..sex is evil, sex is bad SEX IS A SIN! IT"S GOING TO SEND YOU TO BURN IN THE ETERNAL LAKE OF FIRE AMONG THOSE OF THE MOST VILE REPUTE! *cough...gag...ahem* then we're never going to see sex as anything but bad..and when the desires hit us, we have to feel guilty...because we've committed a sin...we've become trained that sex is such an evil thing that we should only do it to create children...never for pleasure...again with the puritan ethic. Sex, like a gun...if treated with due responsibility poses very little actual danger or threat...barring stds..but responsible people wouldn't be at that sort of risk to begin with! Sex is wonderful...it's one of the most beautiful forms of expression that humans posess...and it's only going to be around so long...it's hard to enjoy it post-mortem. (I didn't say it couldn't be DONE....just difficult to enjoy) *whistles*

Alright. There's my two cents.
