Wanted: Intelligent Goth Males |
Posted by

Why is it that, of the 6 or so most frequent posters on the forums, only 2 of them are male? Are males in general less inclined to submit messages? Or is it goth males? But we get plenty of "goth" males submitting pissed off, clueless messages!
Maybe it's just this whole cult thing we've been going on about recently. Maybe goth guys don't want to get too vocal now because they don't feel like worshipping a guy. Maybe they think we'll think they're gay. Should we elect a goddess to draw more men to the cult?It is almost enough to make one think that there are next to no real, heart-deep goth guys out there! Which is odd, because you would think that the goth culture is particularly packed with testosterone friendly themes! Vampires are traditionally male. A man's house is his castle, not a woman's! Gravediggers are generally male (I once had a gravedigger hit on me when I was visiting my grandmother's grave, but that's another story!) Black is a very acceptable masculine color.
Come on, guys! It's great talking with my fellow priestesses, but it's ever so much more fun once a dash of testosterone is added to the brew! I want to know why you aren't posting, and then I want you to post!

I can't answer about the message submission thing, but I am a male, and I am submitting the message, so.... well, that would drag off into veins of theoreticism that I would rather not explore at this rather late juncture in the great day of 6/06/01.
About the cult, however, you might be right, though the idea of a paternal god has been worshipped for thousands of years by Judeo-Christian males everywhere. But, on the other hand, countless cultures have had female "matriarichal" divinities that have met with little success among the male populous. as Robert Graves points out in , a female divinity is more often viewed as any prevalent female in that male's life. The threefold goddess represents sister, mother, and lover of the male-- not any role usually preserved for worship except among the most *ahem* "romantic" *ahem* of cultures(meaning sexually open, to anything, anything you might be interested in sticking in you or sticking yourself in, whatever you're equipped for).
As for the masculinity of various figureheads usually associated with the "goth" society, tall, dark, and handsome is usually a feminine prerequisite for unscrupulous and unbridled passion. Vampires are traditionally known for seducing women, so that would discourage many males from pursuing such a cult. And Gravediggers *ARE* another topic all together, as you point out. As for black being a masculine color, it goes back to the concept of tall, dark and handsome-- and you're pretty dark if you're wearing black. But there are specific colors that set off the pheromones in the opposite sex-- for most women, cherry red stimulates those feelings of wanting to become a mother, and a more orange-red color sets of men on the path of wanton fatherhood.
And if ya want to throw testosterone in there, make it a *mandatory* cult pact to clean your shotgun at the kitchen table weekly. Also various chants could be formed out of single-syllable grunts. entire religious services should be held where, outside of hearing the strong "gee" sound and the drawling "RARRRRR" sound, not a single word of any other language would be heard. And instead of immaculation in water, you could have people destroy "HELLO KITTY!" merchandise to prove loyalty.

Hmmmmm..... Maybe just too busy partying..... Who knows but there ARE a lot of us out here that DO have a lot to say. I have quite a few 'goth' friends both male and female that are VERY sharp and have a lot to say but many just aren't into the computer trip, several are actors at out community theater here in the Valley and I know many others that run thier own sites and do a lot of talking there but they don't seem to go a visiting much, tend to stick to thier site for thier postings and messages. Well here in the SE Corner of WA there is little 'gothic' life so I am always looking for people to talk to and discuss thihgs with. I have started a small dark group in one of the local pubs, just started to show up onece a week with my Tarot deck in hand and doing free readings for people there (of course I accept drinks as donations) and have gotten a small core group together at last of people in the 25-50 year old range....
YES there are a LOT of elder goths out there, you would be surprised at our numbers. We have had Ozzy and Alice since I was a kid and now the culture has deepened and there are a ton of GREAT bands and many other 'diversions' that we ALL share.
Now me I am just the oppisite, you can't shut me up so be ready to see more posts from at least this guy and hope you will find them of some meaning.. I have found this site and wonder of wonder is is ALSO in WA state though it is on the other side it is still GREAT to be here, and I will do what I can to liven it up a bit. I do get to Seattle on occasion and it will be kewl to get to know some of you in that area. It is even kewler to actually be able to meet the faceless voices sometimes and with luck maybe one of these days I will get the chance to do so in person on one of my trips to the West side. Hey guys lets shake, rattle, and roll and show these girls that we are more then just fun in bed..... We have minds too and it is just as macho and kewl to SHOW them and not just be the strong dark silent type.
LETS ROCK!

Vampires may be mostly guys, but as shown in the Anne Rice ( ;) ) novels, there's so much homoerotic context (Interview with a Vampire), not to mention issues of incest (Vampire Lestat), that most "testerone" goth guys might feel a little awkward worshipping another blood-and-flesh male. Me personally, well, I'm good friends with a god! Right gdlike? (grins). As to a man's house being his castle, well this goes out on a limb, but work with me here: A typical "goth" guy is an artist, right? Since he wants to be a good artist, and given the history of "good" art, he has to be poor, because was not every good artist a "starving artist"? So, there in essence, he will have no money. So, he will end up working his proverbial derrier off to make an honest (yeah, right) living. Since he is a starving artist, he will not have much money of that living after spending it on supplies for his art/profession. So, he will only live somewhere he can afford, therefore completely eliminating the "man's house is his castle" theory, because he will almost never own, rent, or even live in a house. He'll mostly live in a studio apartment, therefore making him more depressed, feeding into his creative juices. And since he is starving, he will only be able to afford clothes from a hand-me-down store, therefore getting second-hand "black" clothing (damned blueblacks and brownblacks!). So he will be poor, wear second-rate clothing, and live in a studio/hellhole apartment, or live with his parents. Now, with all this said, he will no doubt be very tired, depressed, and generally not wanting to move much. So why would he want to post articles online unless he was really pissed? Because the only time he has the energy to post something online is when he IS pissed!
But, then again.... this is just my theory.....
;)

That does seem to be a prevalent issue Schizo. Living down in the Olympia area, most of the gothic crowd you get down here aren't endowed with intelligence. I think it's only those who truly delve deeply into the goth culture, and embrace it, that have the depth of thought and word. The others, are just floating on the surface, trying to reap the "benefits" they see that come to true Goth followers.
Just my 2 cents. :)

I am neither White nor Black, in polarity: I am Grey. I serve the Lady, but answer to Odin. I believe that Tradition makes a good doormat: something best left outside, so you have something to wipe your feet on.
I am open to almost any concept. I understand the obligation of SwordBrotherhood, and male bonding.
I have been slow to Post, since I am new to this Site, having none of my "kind" to relate with.
I enjoy this Site, and the sharing you all have. Living in "the sticks", far from a metro area, sorta makes me a forced Hermit, though I have always sought to join with others. The problem is, I'm just not compatible with anyone in my "peer" age group.
I thank you all for your patience.

As with most other aspects of our worldly life, males remain reserved in most interactions and continue to stifle the emotional/creative side of their personalities.Somethings will simply take time to fix.

I stumbled across this submission via following comments on another user's profile... I was curious...
My take on it is... The males that would lable themselves as gothic... on the whole tend to be attracted by the infantile promise of power over women... they don't approach it because they feel a connection with the darkness... they don't revel in the beauty of the night and the whisper of nox and her children... the do not wonder if voudoun is the wrong path... they come to it because they want attention... they come to it because pale chicks in short skirts and fishnets are hot.... they come to it because they believe that the chicks are all sluts and they think they might get laid...
Those of us who would be labeled gothic because of our natural proclivities tend to chafe at the label. We stray from teh gothic norm by being enamored of the beauty of the world. We are more bohemian than goth....
The problem with bohemia, is that it is a place of wonder, and most of its denizens are possessed of a great deal of ADD... we tend to wander off to pursue our bohemian tendencies... only some of us write to be bohemian... others paint, take photos, compose music, draw, model... hell some have taken fucking to the pinacles of art.
my two cents... take it for what it's worth.. I don't know if it answered your question, schizo... but I tried
