Drama: Pic Stealing |
Posted by
Devin on Tuesday, February 12, 2002 - 12:55 PM PST
The only thing that annoys me more than "Models" with no pictures of themselves is fakecakes using other people's pix to represent themselves online. I used to talk to them in chat rooms all the time. Usually they'd pick a model out of a gothic clothing catalog or something. It's nothing new for people to be posting fake pix on this site - But getting two of them in the same day made me have to say something.
Why on earth would anyone steal a pic from a high profile site like Goth Babe of the Week, and post it on - of all things - a site frequented by online goths? Wouldn't it make sense to them that some of these online goths might also visit the high profile goth site?
Also, the GBOTW site has links to the home pages of all the gothbabes. I was actually only looking to see if the girl from texas posted a pic of a girl from texas (she didn't, the pic was of a girl from florida) - when I saw the pic of the lovely Ms. Vail and recognized it. So I shot her an email, and it took all of 10 minutes to get an answer back that she was not the one that posted the pic.
Now if these people had tried to pull something over on everyone, and done it well - they might deserve some respect. But come on - there was no thought put into this at all. If you're gonna be a lying fuck, you should do it well or give it up. The fact that it took me less than 10 minutes to get incontrivertable proof in both cases means that egnima and sorceress_ly should definately give it up.
|
Note: I didn't post links to the pictures in question because I'm going to be deleting them from the members gallery soon -Devin |

Excuse me for playing devil’s advocate for a moment and only a moment. I pity these girls to a degree. Before you all loose your bearings, just hear me out for a moment. If we didn’t live in a society where every woman has to be a perfect size 5, with a perfect nose, perfect hair, and etc.. you wouldn’t see a lot of this. I have been here before and I know how it feels to not be accepted because you’re a little over weight, or a part of your body doesn’t match that of a model out of glamour magazine. I had developed such a bad attitude over weight gain that I just stopped eating completely, I hated myself and thought that I deserved to be punished with starvation. I locked myself in the house and pulled out the sweats and never left the computer chair. Then I met Devin and Mel and eventually, I was invited out to Seattle. In all honestly, I tried to find every excuse not to go because of my inferior complex. But both of you never seemed to notice, and if you did, you never said a word. It didn’t matter because you sincerely liked me for me..the person on the inside. That was the dose of medicine I needed. Soon after my visit there, the confidence started coming back and the weight started to come off effortlessly. Now, I am a brand new me, or just as good before my illness.
I just can’t help but think that these two girls did this because of this type of pressure. However, this does not make it ok to steal someone else’s identity. I can’t imagine how the real Ms.Vail feels at this point to know that someone has raped her of her identity. Not to mention the essence of betrayal that everyone here at shmeng is feeling.*shakes head sadly* I feel sad for both of you, IF only you would have been yourself, these people would have embraced your friendship with no questions asked. They would have never judged you by your appearance. Unfortunately, neither of you will never come to know this because of your deception. I mourn your loss.

It should have become obvious to everyone at this point that I did not major in Diplomacy in college, nor is "winning/keeping friends" listed amongst my hobbies. That should be adequate preface for me to say the following:
Pointing out that the pictures in question are not genuine is enough. Heaping abuse upon the individuals who posted the ingenuine pictures reveals a deeper and far more profound ugliness than a weight problem or assymetrical features. I do not condone misrepresentation, but I am far, far more tolerant of that than self-righteousness and elitism (and yes, I expect that this post will elicit a response which accuses me of practicing both).
I would simply like to say that while we are maintaining that mainstream aesthetic standards are unfair and unhealthy and lead to unreasonable expectations about what we are supposed to look like, I fail to see what positive outcome can come of trashing people for behaving in ways that we disapprove of... unless "Goth" is nothing more than a surrogate social clique for people who have been shunned by more traditional social cliques. Frankly, running people out of town on a rail for their indiscretions is something I would expect from high school sports enthusiasts and homecoming queens. Let's evaluate the harm that can come from our actions and attitudes and reserve our rancor for those that truly deserve it (viz. Career Politicians).

Hi, I'm Vail (now gothvail on this site). It was my pic that was stolen from Goth Babe of the week. And I am really irked because that is the second instance of my pictures being stolen this month. Now, I gather that it should be really flattering, but it is also as annoying as hell. Anyway, you lot all seem really cool, so I have decided to join you.

As mistress of orgies and since we have misplaced the mother confessor(i think that is Schiz's title), I feel that I should mention that we have actual Rules against stealing pics. So it doesnt matter if it is legal or mean, its still wrong. ,br>To site the "holy"...um sections of the website: The 10 Commandments
8) Thou shalt not steal other people's stuff, personality, style, words, thoughts, beliefs, or culture. Get yer own.
The 16 Strong Suggestions
2) Thou Shalt Not be Obsessy or Psycho
11) Thou Shalt Reject, Disassemble, and then Forget the existance of Heathen Stupids who fling the first Shmeng (is it time to move on to forgetfulness yet?)
13) Thou Shalt Not Aspire to Bad Taste (this was certainly bad taste)
15) Thou Shalt Not Hold Grudges unless Thou Art a Scorpio designed for that purpose (I LOVE being a scorp)
And last but not least a reminder of the real sins in life
7 Deadly Sins
Stupidity
Uglyness (lies are very ugly)
Pushyness
Violence
Arrogance
Unsharing
Hate
For all the newer people that weren't here when we codified these rules/guidelines/important thoughts you may want to look at them. By your words shall we know you, judge you, and tease you 'til we are done.

Since i am a Scorpio, I can hold a grudge as long as I want right? Whoo hoo!!! I looove being a Scorp!
Also, I have to agree, I know that almost everything I post is in jest, or at least a bit sarcastic, because I tend to have a very dry humor, and I am worried that someone is going to take something I say way to seriously, In real life, my friends made me a card that says "sarcasm" on it, so they can tell, but there is no sarcasm button here... Devin, you need to get one!

Ironically enough, I stumbled onto this topic the moment the random pic thingie showed Feral's friend Rilla standing naked outside somewhere doing a ritual. I've sat at computers back in Cruces surfing Shmeng and having people who, five minutes before, had been making lewd comments and all that male junk at me, peek over my shoulder, see the Rilla nekkie pic, and whorf the crumbs of their lunches on my clothes and rant about how ugly and fat she was, etc. etc. Well, they must have NO imagination whatsoever, because under my clothes, I look exactly like that. thanks for the ego boost, you gaggle of Las Cruces jock twits.
In any event, I've never had my pic stolen as far as I know, and only once had my identity mimicked online, and that was pretty funny to watch. However, I seriously hate it when people "borrow" pictures, words or voices for anything more than a joke or a role. If a girl can't deal with showing her actual face and form to a group of names on a screen who undoubtedly don't care if she's a little walk away from the supermodel side, then she SHOULDN'T CARE ABOUT POSTING HER EFFIN' PICTURE AT ALL. Kiddies, I put aside my own ughs and put up a picture of my fat, hairy legs, and then made a joke about the Slimfast in the background. I know I'm nasty. I know people don't wanna see me. That doesn't mean I go steal pictures of Vampcourt to make up for it. Hell, if I'm not mistaken, I still got a few compliments from people. Never underestimate your own looks.. and for fuck's sake.. stop borrowing other people's. It ain't you, baby.

Just a crazy question, but--
Has anyone seen them since like 72 hours ago when it first came up?
I mean, the internet and the world are big places, people just can leave and never return.
And if they're on dial-up they can just pray for a new IP when they reconnect..

Being a raging Aires with proximity to ordinance and a paladin complex just isn't fun if ya' don't have villanous curs to bedevil...I know I came on this one kinda' late, my bust...real life was beating me in the head...but I almost didn't believe it!! Not us! Not a site I have come to know and love, and not have people shocked when I say something off the wall...but indeed! This beloved site has been infiltrated by the nastiest sort of people...people who so desperately want to be someone else they steal a face. Yuck...oh well...it's all good and we got a new girl! She's purty too! And I can still rant!! Yay! By the way...they still alive or have we yet to put the large ravenous maggots into their nostrils and reddened eye sockets?

I just got a reply on this from sorceress_ly (finally). When she first submitted that pic to the site, I sent her this note:
Is that pic you submitted a picture of you?
I got no reply so I just approved it, since pix were piling up in the queue behind it, and I wasn't sure I wanted to delete it just yet. Here's the response I finally got today:
no,
and I dont appriciate how everyone has been treating me about it.
Followed by this:
I more or less didn't want to put it up... but I did ans I feel horrible for deciving who I thought would be openminded. My friend the other fake-cake did not do it. My friend Juan did, he thought it would be funny to pull something like that and it's not. She has been upseted by the HATE mail that she has been getting, I dont use that word litely in this form. I would like everyone to give her an Apology, she deserves it, she is a great person and I love her dearly. On the other hand I do not care what people think about what I did and you can take it off, I had a fear of self rejection when I wanted to put my picture on so I did the cowardly thing, put someones elses pic on instead, I'm sorry if I have dissapointed you, I do that alot.

blame the mood I am in for this...
I know that ppl are all just just forgetting and forgiving right now, or at least some are, but I still think we need to break out the tar and feathers, or something, name calling isn't really a punishment, especially since you can always hit delete. I am jesting at least partially, but face it, everyone feels closer to one another when there is a "threat" of some kind, because there is something bonding them, admit it, no matter how nice you are, itas at least a little fun :-)

I totally agree. I chat on one of those high speed message systems where everyone uses avatars and everyone uses models. I know everyone wants to look pretty and stuff and Im not a size 5 or anything. But I only ever use pics of myself or cartoon characters. I mean why lie about the way you look.. just because it's the net... everyone knows models don't spend that much time on the net *l*
