This is about me being pissed like hell at Romania. Another year has passed by and another Halloween missed because of this shitty mentality we have to deal with, or I have to deal with, cause nobody in this UN forsaken country seems to care. I know it's not a traditional Romanian holiday, but still, so many other countryes adoped it, cause they at least have some perspective as to what makes people content.
I thought there was going to be something special planned by our beloved mayor, since in the past year he has put together some surpisingly good events such as "The Bucharest festival 2001", which was at least a shot for our unknown metal bands to proove themselves, as was "The Beer Fest". Other events were planned and carried out with succes, to please everyone.
Aparently, not everyone.
I'm aware of the fact that there isn't much to our Goth scene, but still, Halloween isn't only about that.
More over, I didn't expect to see trick or treaters, or mind blowing decorations on every door, but just some recognision of the fact that it was indeed HALLOWEEN.
We have one Mall, one in all Bucharest, and I gotta' hand it to them, they were great. It was the only place that got close to what it should have been like all over.
Some years ago, there was a bit of scandal about Romania celebrating Halloween, because the old people considered that it would ruin our traditions. What traditions are those? Aside from X-Mas, New years and Easter (of course, religious celebrations) all we get is the national day, the first of december (which is also the international AIDS day…coincidence?…) and we don't even do anything, it's just an excuse for everyone to skip work or school.
But it was okay with those whinning oldies for every televison to organize some kind of lame show and go all out on Valentine's Day, wasn't it? What is it? Are they hopeing that their looser niece or daughter will find someone to share the rest of their pathetic lifes with? On TV?! What, is that some kind of a half an hour fame thing? Everyone thinks these people are pathetic, but they just don't seem to get it. Just like bringing 7 year olds on stage, to recite some kiddie poem, get a doll or some toy and crackers and then cry a little cause they're so scared by the big bad camera… But I'm going off subject.
At least my friend and I treated ourselfs to dressing up and scarring old ladies. We were the only people that dressed up without being paid for it. But we just ended up having a beer at the only decent metalclub that exists here.
I thought there was going to be at least some progress, seeing that our government was beginning to show a bit of interest towards our young society, but again I was disspointed, like usual. I don't even know why I'm doing this to myself, every year, it's the same thing over and over.
Okay, don't you find this the least strange, seeing as this is after all Dracula's Land and the home of Elizabeth Bathory a.k.a. "The Blood Countess"????????

I know what you mean. Halloween is not a traditional Spanish holiday either, but at least many young people have adopted it. It is not strange to see people dressed up, and there are several Halloween parties. In most bars you get a free drink if you costumed, so actually a costume can get to be highly profitable. Many purists condemn Halloween as an imported holiday with no precedent in Spanish history (and they are fools who know nothing of Spanish history, by the way, every culture has had some or another solar holy day in the equinox, sure in Romania as well)
In the Goth scene Halloween is unbearable here. I can't stand it. It gets filled with norms and preps all around, many dressed as undead, many dressed like US. I hate it. In Spain you can still find many people who are real Goths, with whom you can talk about literature or poetry or music or philosophy or religion... or anything. In Halloween the pubs are crowded, every goth brings hirs couple of very-good-but-non-Goth friends to the scene, meaning the usaual attendance is multiplied by 3.
So most Goths disappear in halloween. Many have rituals to perform because of the Equinox, anyway, including me. As for myself, I like Halloween because it's the only noght when the Goth can get really out of our graves and go to prep places, be the great cool kings of the party, insult everyone you feel lke it and be admired for it, and pick up prep girls who actually fight over you because they want to ring their friends next morning and say something like "Geee, Stephanie, Guess whom did I fuck tonight"
And, yes, it's a pity that such a misterious and beautiful land like yours has no Halloween, No All Saints Night (Though that's a Roman Catholic holiday) and no Goth scene. A real loss.
And you do it because you keep the faith in yourself and what you believe in. Hey pioneers are always alone or they wouldn't be pioneers, would they?
Keep your spirit up and your head down! Someday there'll be a real halloween in Bucharest, and luckiliy you'll be there to take part in it.

Halloween in Pittsburgh isn't too bad. Of course unless your a little kid, you aren't going to like most of the haunted houses and trails. There was a pretty good show at Club Laga though, if anybody ever has a chance t ogo see Voltair, I would recomend it, he put on a great show.

Samhain has just about lost it's meaning as far as I'm concerned in the USA. It has become so commercialized that it drives me nuts. Xmas stuff it out before Halloween is even over. They push costumes and candy. Thanksgiving almost doesn't exist. Maybe one shelf of stuff in the stores compared to mass quantities of Xmas stuff.
I dressed up as myself for Halloween. Got lots of comments on my costume, everybody kept asking if I was dressed up like elvira or a vampire. I had to very calmly ask them if i had fangs in or had my hair fixed like hers. I was dressed in a black long dress with long gloves on (the fingers cut out, it's just how I like them) and my normal make up on (no painted white face). I told them I was dressed as myself. Several shocked faces, they thought I was joking before. It was a very comfortable day, felt nice to be dressed normal (for me) and not have to conform to work dress (which is all black).
Don't loose heart. We just need to keep reminding people what the real meaning of Halloween/Samhain is and we won't totally loose it. As long as some of us don't forget, the knowledge won't be lost. We are the keepers of the knowledge of the darkerside, now one else gives a dung about it or wants to forget it.
My daughter wants to do a report for social studies on romania. Her teacher thinks she is nuts. She is having problems finding information on it. It shouldn't be that difficult, but it appears to be. She can't even find the population of the capital in library books. Now that one really made the hairs on my neck stand up in irritation. Doesn't surprise me though, tis the way of things it seems anymore.

Halloween? We have another cool holiday, Sanzaiene, on the 23rd or 24th of June. I think you go through the forest to see banshees or at least the Romanian equivalent. Guess it's way cooler than Halloween and you don't need a lot of people to get it started. Just take a couple of fellows, wonder through the forest at night and look for banshees. But again, you have to find the appropriate forest. Or maybe a countryside cemerery on a hill? I know a good one in Bologa. Boo! Spooky.
