Lemmings on Parade: There are not words to describe what I am feeling |

I believe I speak on behalf of everyone when I say: WHAT THE FUCK… I watch CNN… As if you could not tell from my last posting. But this time… I was just… floored… not with outrage, but I was watching CNN for my Daily Dose of Worldly Crap and… CNN… the Cable News Network… was running… Drum roll please…
THE NIGHT'S TV LISTINGS.
I'll give you a moment to soak that in.
And, as usual, I will repeat myself, because it bears repeating.
CNN was running the night's TV listings.
I am drawing a blank. I am literally, out of things to say on this… so I ask:
WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON HERE? DID I MISS SOMETHING? DID I WAKE UP IN AN ALTERNATE UNIVERSE THIS MORNING?
Since when are the TV listings news?

TV listings are not news. They are, however, a useful distraction from actual news. Since the 3 major corporations which control almost all the major media groups don't really want anyone to understand this country's problems, since then we might feel compelled to DO something about them, they pacify us with TV listings.
I think Richard Grant said it well in a very strange British movie, How to Get Ahead in Advertising: "We thought the nightmare would be the telescreen watching us. But it is us who watch it."
Salon Magazine has a great article on this. Check it out at www.salon.com. Look up The Media Borg.

They probably became news sometime after the touchy-feely stories became news. Lassie saves Timmy the Darwinian-challenged youth from putting his head in a bear trap...film at 11. That's not news at all, and it is a travesty that they will spend 10 minutes on something like this and then as a blurb say "by the way, people are dying in some country in eastern europe, lots of them according to this report, but i can't be bothered to understand why or pronounce the country's name so i'll just call it 'the former country whose name i can pronounce' despite the fact that nobody calls us 'the former american british colonies' and anyway, that Lassie's some dog, huh? Too bad Lassie couldn't save that big fat football guy from his own ignorance and the abundant thermonuclear radiation cocktail we all swill these days despite the Kyoto accords trying to bring an end to the party...Back to you, Brent."

Reality is what you think it is... or, more accurately, what some authority (television, usually) tells you that you think it is.
Interesting article about this here:
