Articles: Bad Poetry |

It always ticks me off when someone says to me "Hey, read this, I worked on it for, like, a whole hour!!!" and they show me some of the worst poetry, saying it's a work of art. When they ask my opinion, I say the truth, and they always tell me "You just don't understand 'True' Art." Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't true art supposed to be artistic?
I mean, Art is about your sweat, blood, tears, turmoil, pain, joy, and your all, and how you present it. If someone has no talent, then why the hell do they act like they do?!? Yes, I'm not going to be hypocritical, because I too write bad poetry, (website: http://www.geocities.com/phalkon13 I have good AND bad poetry there, but not because I'm shoving it in your face, it's only for people who want to read it)
But I also write some good poetry from time to time. As so, I am very critical about someone's art because I give my honest criticism!!! If someone asks me how I think it is, I'll tell them, and tell them how I think they can improve. So people, PLEASE, if you have no talent, REALIZE IT, and stop writing the damned poetry!!!!!
thank you.

Note: Due to the ammount of bad poetry in this site's inbox in the last couple days, I was very glad to see this mixed in. - Devin |

"I mean, Art is about your sweat, blood, tears, turmoil, pain, joy, and your all, and how you present it. "
"As so, I am very critical about someone's art "
how can you be critical about someone else's "blood, tears, turmoil, pain, joy...?" or are you just critical of how they present said pain and bodily fluid?
you bring up talent...I'm curious, how do you define talent with something so subjective?
"Art" isn't about competition. About talent. Or even about sharing.
My favorite dictionary definition of art is "Human effort to imitate, supplement, alter, or counteract the work of nature"
I don't disagree with your sentiment. I hate reading teen angst poetry. I just do. It doesn't negate anyone's pain, or blood, or tears, or what-have-you. Now, is teen poetry art? Or is it a way of communicating feeling like shit? Does the particular person write poetry as a means to get their feelings out, or is it another means of whining and getting attention?
"isn't true art supposed to be artistic?"
I guess my only question is...who really cares?
Art is a concept, let's not get hung up on words.

Re: Bad Poetry by Phalkon13 (phalkon13@attbi.com) on Jan 30, 2002 - 07:44 PM (User info | Send a Message) http://www.geocities.com/phalkon13 | Ok, as some people are understanding me wrong now, let me explain and clear some things up. When I say blood, sweat, tears, etc... I mean it!!! What I am ranting about is those people who write poetry because of lack of something else to do, and then dub it as a piece de la resistance! Just because THEY wrote it. I am talking about those people who don't really write, or paint, or sculpt, or do anything artistic because they like it. I'm talking about those people who SAY it is art, but they took a total of an hour while they were waiting for thier lunch period in high school to end. I am talking about those people who only draw or write because they think it's the "thing to do". I'm talking about those people who don't know what "Art" is. What the concept is. Or, what the state of mind is. (Granted, there are people who write very bad poetry, who DO slave over it, but you can tell that they HAVE slaved over it, because some of it either makes sense, has some talent shoing through, or is actually GOOD. And those people are the ones I say Kudos to. Keep it up. But the ones I am ranting about are those people who think because they thought of something that sounds cool to them once, and write a little "poem" because they have nothing better to do. Those are the ones that I say this to: "Either work harder, and produce SOMETHING at least halfway decent, or find something you ARE good at."
(By the way, My rant was sort of an addition to Devin's rant talking about how this website is becoming a haven for bad poetry.) |

I was not refering to that. I was refering to the "poetry" that DOESN'T mean anything to them. What's the purpose then, right? |

Re: Bad Poetry by Comedian (comedian@callatg.com) on Jan 31, 2002 - 10:56 AM (User info | Send a Message) | Well, let's think about this for a few minutes-- to dra w aclear definition of "bad poetry", we first have to decide what is good peotry.
Now, me, I'm a limericks and Frost man myself- nothing like some somber depression and an actual rhyme about a woman with two dicks or a man from Kent, eh? But what is BAD POETRY? Come on-- sure, maybe it doesn't rhyme, but it all depends on how it is read, the inflection of the speech, the meaning that only voice can give. Sure, voice kind of tires out after the 64th line of Byron's "Corsair," but poetry is aas much a bardic tradition as music is- poetry being the words without the background noise of music.
Can you really set a definition of bad poetry when you've never even heard it? |

i dig what you say, but people shove their work in your face for criticism so they can grow and eventually write good poetry. if they don't listen to you becaus they only wanted to hear you say "gee, suzy, thats' sum purdy shit ya got there" then they have low self esteem. like you said it takes work. and criticism is how we grow...

How can someone actually claim their bad poetry to be art, I mean, if you say you spent hours on like 1 poem, isn't that kinda pathetic? How can someone be really expressing themself if they keep trying to seem a certain way just to manipulate their own image? It's so pathetic when people look for validation like that. What is it with them wanting to hear you lie to make them feel better?
I don't care if they write it, they just need to do the world a favor and keep it to themselves.

The reason they spend hours changing their poetry is because not all emotions and situations can be easily defined and described within a half hour or so of work. If someone is going to express themselves they want it to be just right. Just right takes time. Whats pathetic is someone who rushes through their poetry and settles for something they're not happy with. Poetry that hasn't been written to the author's satisfaction is really the only thing I'd consider "bad poetry", but only the author would know it. |

Two of my friends draw. They're both good at it. However, they each think the other does 'bad' art. Their ongoing fight has led me to realize that art is completely subjective. What I mean is that nobody can say what art is 'good' or what art is 'bad' except in their own opinion. What I consider good art may be considered bad by the masses. I don't think anyone has the right to say anyone else's work sucks or that it shouldn't be shared, only that they personally don't like it. Make sense?

That's it right there I think. With most of the bad poetry I am subjected to, it's bad because the author can't see the imagery they're writing about. They're trying to write what they think will impress someone, so saying I'm judging someone else's pain is wrong since it's not their pain I'm judging, it's pretend pain. Cliche' rhymes don't help much either - I'd rather read something with no rhymes and good imagery.
Demons spread their wings
And come to take away my pain
The blade on my knife stings
As I sit here in the rain.
The reason this piece is bad is not because the rhymes are over used, or because it took me less than 30 seconds to write, or even because each line uses a different bit of imagery. It's bad because I've never sat in the rain cutting myself with a knife and looked at demon wings. So not only am I not getting across to the reader what that would be like, but I have no idea what it would be like myself.

Ohhhh boyy.....here we goes....
"It always ticks me off when someone says to me "Hey, read this, I worked on it for, like, a whole hour!!!" and they show me some of the worst poetry, saying it's a work of art.
I'm not really sure what you're cutting on here. Are you upset because good Art(tm) surely must take more than an hour to create? Personally speaking, I've never found that to be true when examining or creating individual pieces of work...
'When they ask my opinion, I say the truth, and they always tell me "You just don't understand 'True' Art."
Maybe you're upset that the person writing said bad poem is blowing off your opinion of it by saying you don't understand art. While I can understand how that would be annoying, perhaps you need to work on the delivery of your critique. Are you coming across as too hard? People often see what they produce as direct extensions of their personalities...
"Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't true art supposed to be artistic?"
I may not be right, but I'll throw in anyway. Philosophically speaking, there is no such thing as "true art" if you are using the word true in a qualitative way. One way to define art is the product, created for the viewing of by some audience, of one who is an artist. In other words, if you make It and call It art, then It is art. That means that we as a public must accept anything produced by an artist as art (aka 'true art'). Sound vague? Well, it is. Notice there is no judgement of quality in the above definition. What is Good Art(tm) and Bad Art(tm) is strictly up to the opinion of the public in question. Whether it be gallery owners, readers of shmeng, or my mom and dad....every audience will have a different definiton of what is good and bad, high and low art. Personally, I don't make much of a distinction. I mean, put a fart joke in a movie and it's low art. But if the fart joke is in the middle of a play by Shakespeare, it's high art. To me, it's still a fart joke.
"I mean, Art is about your sweat, blood, tears, turmoil, pain, joy, and your all, and how you present it."
For some people, art is all of the above. For others, it's a release or an escape. For others still, just a way to fill time instead of watching Tv. Again, to me it's moot because I don't think motive really plays into whether or not a work of art is amazing or not.
"If someone has no talent, then why the hell do they act like they do?!?"
Talent has nothing to do with it, and I get really sick of that attitude as a professional artist. See, because if people can convince themselves that art is nothing but talent that leads to 2 assumptions. #1. Is that "Oh, I could never draw/write/play an instrument like that because I just don't have the god given talent." True, talent may help you out in the beginning, and it may give you a bit of a head start. But the reason I can draw is because I work on it, every single day. The reason my boi is an awesome musician is because he has put the practice time in, all along. There's nothing magical to learning the skills of the arts. It's all about dedication and work, just like anything else. Which realates heavily to assumption #2 : That artists use their talent and hence never have to work at anything. People used to laugh at me when I told them I was going to college for art. After all, science and business are "real" majors. Then they realized that I was the one on campus for 10 hour days, and while they were out going to bars I was in the studio busting my ass on a project I wasn't even gauranteed a good grade on. So, talent (again) is in the eye of the beholder.
--snip stuff about writing poetry--
"But I also write some good poetry from time to time. As so, I am very critical about someone's art because I give my honest criticism!!!

Re: Bad Poetry by Phalkon13 (phalkon13@attbi.com) on Feb 03, 2002 - 10:58 PM (User info | Send a Message) http://www.geocities.com/phalkon13 | Alright. Someone who speaks thier mind. When I bitch about how someone shows me crap, labeling it "a great poem", I'm bitching about the fact that the ONLY reason they wrote it was to impress someone. They did not write it to vent thier anger, release thier sadness, or repose of thier joy. They wrote it because they wanted to "fit in". THAT is the crap I'm speaking of. I have no problem with someone who writes "bad peotry" because they want to get a message across with it. When you say "make bad art because it makes you happy," I agree with that partially. I know at least four people who did things to impress others just this past week. A friend of mine got a tatoo on her back, because she thought a certain someone would think it's cute. THAT is what I hate. People who only do something normally creative, artistic, or spurratic because they are trying to make someone else like them more. Who the hell cares what someone thinks of your tatoo!?! The same goes with MOST (not all) bad poetry. When someone cares more about how much you'll like thier art then what thier art actually means to them, there is where the problem arises. So, I hope I answered you question (at least in part, if not all). (P.S. The reason that I critisize bad artists so much is so that they can maybe USE my opinion and learn. Otherwise, why ask me what I think?!? )
Thanks for the response.

HERE HERE! It seems as though all you have to do is write down a bunch or big depressing words in any order and you have goth poetry. Something like:
Sadness is darkness,
Darkness is sad,
I am sad,
Therefore, I am darkness.
This is then read aloud by the writer, (in his vampire outfit), dramatically swirling his black cape behind him as he run around in a big circle imitating flight....
yeah...
