Articles: Hospitals are Barbaric!!! |
Posted by
Schizo on Thursday, November 29, 2001 - 07:07 AM PST
I am convinced that hospitals in America are COMPLETELY BARBARIC!!! Under the trappings of technology and soft colors and gentle voices, these people often seem to be out to see just how much discomfort you can take!
Late appointments suck. Late appointments for an ultrasound which you are eagerly awaiting suck even more. But what is the suckiest of the sucky is a half-hour-late appointment for an ultrasound for which you had to prepare by FILLING YOUR BLADDER!!! What is this, some high-tech form of Chinese Water Torture? Imagine having to pee - to PEE SO BAD that you are squirming and writhing and CRYING sitting there in your waitingroom chair, while pregnant women and receptionists look uncomfortably on. Imagine knowing that somewhere, SOMEWHERE, there is a bathroom for the asking, but, for all you know about ultrasounds, if you go pee and get relief, you will never get to see the picture of your baby, never find out your real due-date, and incur the wrath of the entire hospital! Imagine watching the slow minutes tick by, 30 of them, as people who arrived AFTER you go happily into the hallowed recesses of the back rooms, where are located wonderful things like ultrasound machines and TOILETS!!! Imagine the receptionist taking pity on you, and saying you can go to the bathroom, just don't pee all the way! DON'T PEE ALL THE WAY!!!??? How do you do that? I haven't been doing my Kegels for that long yet!
Somehow I managed not to pee all the way. It just made me feel worse. FINALLY, the nurse arrived, took me to the hallowed sanctuary, smeared the goop on my tummy, and I forgot all discomfort as I watched my little baby's heart beat. Unfortunately, I have about one month longer to wait than I thought. Damn. But it was SO BEAUTIFUL!!! I SAW MY BABY!!!
Then they tell me. Since my baby is so small, they can have a more accurate ultrasound using the probe, which DOES NOT REQUIRE A FULL BLADDER!!!!!!!!!!! I could have slain the entire hospital. Oh well. At that point, as long as I was allowed to pee ALL THE WAY I could forgive them of even murder.
Then, of course, I got poked and prodded and got samples taken of just about everything you can take a sample of. Turns out I have a dangerous blood-type, so I'll have to get shots so my body won't attack my baby's body. But otherwise, everything seems to be fine and normal.
So my due-date is July 9th! I was hoping for early June, but oh well.
A couple bits of miscellanious info. - I am getting a new roommate - a girl named Charlotte and her 1-year-old son Zavier. She's great! And really supportive! Her baby's father is a bit of a dead-beat, too, so she can help me stand up for myself. So the BF is going to be outnumbered now. He better watch his step!
Second bit of miscellanious info. - I have discovered that my kitten Ophelia is not a girl after all. So now, due to it's comic and psychotic tendencies, I have decided to name it after the clown whose skull Hamlet soliliquized over Ophelia's grave - Yorick. It suits the crazy cat to a T.

Congrats! Yes I think they give pregnant women the pee test just to see if we can take the strain and not loose our minds. That's not the real reason, but I felt the same way when I went in for my ultrasound. Technology is such a wonderous thing, some day they'll be able to tell the dif between a bladder and a baby, then we won't have to do that. It sounds like the poking and prodding was very much worth it if they can avoid any problems along the way. My only wish was to have a healthy baby, it was granted. I wish the same thing for you.

*wandering the halls in a gown that shows my whole behind*
IF I SEE ONE MORE SHADE OF PASTEL, THEY'LL BE PUTTING ME IN THE "OTHER" TYPE OF HOSPITAL!!!
But on a serious note (although the above is true...) my father is a nurse in the ER. And he's not sadistic. He's terribly overworked, and stressed by idiots that 'know' more than him... Of course who am I to trust, as I only hear of this from him... But be nice to hospital people, please?

Re: Hospitals are Barbaric!!! by Schizo on Nov 30, 2001 - 05:35 AM (User info | Send a Message) | Oh, I was nice. I was the little suffering angel, laughing though tears, and all that. But God! When you have to pee, you have to pee, and there's no arguing! Better a slightly hysterical patient than a soggy spot on one of their little rose-and-teal chairs! |

late appointments??
heh heh.
Lucky you.
In our part of the world, late appointments would be the last of our worries. :)
Please invest in some more brain cells or give your brain to someone who has a use for it.
Other than that, congratulations for your new baby and I hope all goes well.

Re: US Hospitals are Barbaric ? yeah right. by Schizo on Nov 30, 2001 - 12:40 PM (User info | Send a Message) | Listen, Coward, if you're going to try to insult my intelligence, it might be more nobly done with your name posted. Anyway, all who know me know the ridiculousness of that jab, so I'm not worried.
As for late appointments, I can be as patient as anyone as long as my bladder is empty. I am very aware of the fact that the conditions of hospitals in third world countries are far worse and all that, but really, that doesn't help me much when I'm about to deposit puddles on the floor of the waiting room.
Just because someone is suffering more than I does not mean that I am not suffering.
Might I mention that your own brain cells need a little bolstering if you can't catch the fact that my comment about the barbarism of hospitals was not intended to be taken seriously? I was writing from the point of view of someone about to pop from pee, and if you have ever been in that situation, you will know that all looks bleak, and it is difficult to put things in perspective under the circumstances. I was attempting to transport the reader into my perilous position at the time, not to describe the state of sanity my mind reached when bladder pressure was finally relieved. If your mind is not capable of the leaps of imagination necessary to put yourself in my shoes, then I would say your mental muscles need a bit of limbering. |

A goth being funny ? That's a new one ;)

A pompous goth - now that is funny.

It is not my intention to insult your intelligence, but merely to point out the obvious. oops there I go again ;). No, actually your story at first glance felt as if it was scribbled by someone with slightly (ever so slightly, mind you) misplaced priorities, and given the state of affairs in places less fortunate than yours, seemed a little insensitive and therefore much too tempting for me to give you a little prod in the ribs. I did not realize it was an attempt at humour.
Please accept my apologies.
I remain yours truly,
A. Coward.
P.S. I hope that I am forgiven enough that you will name your offspring after me :)

Re: US Hospitals are Barbaric ? yeah right. by Schizo on Dec 01, 2001 - 04:31 AM (User info | Send a Message) | Obviously, Coward, you are among those rare and privileged mortals who never have to pee. Is it so difficult to understand? It's one thing to have to pee when no restroom is in sight. It's torture. But to have to pee when a restroom is RIGHT THERE, and then to find out that it was all for nothing after all, is insanity incarnate. THAT was the point of my original story. And anyone with the ability to pee ought to be able to comprehend that.
Why can't goths be funny? Are you one of that narrow-minded breed that believes that goths are incapable of humor? Yes, adolescent goths and those that seem trapped in adolescence do often seem to lack that essential charactaristic, but in general, most goths I've met worth their salt have a very well-developed sense of humor.
Are you sure you know the definition of pompous? It doesn't mean to use multi-syllabic words. That's called "having a good vocabulary".
Dear Coward, if my lack of intelligence is so patent, why bother to point it out? It's like saying "Look! I have a nose!"
Oh, poor baby, was I perhaps neglecting to be completely soft and sensitive to every overly touchy person who might exist in the world? Did I forget to allow my speech to resemble a giant foam pillow, with no edges that might harm anyone? Shall I endeavor to rack my poor, insufficient brains for hours to make sure that my words are absent of offense to every last one of the 5 billion-odd people on this planet?
Shall I attempt to re-write this - "I had to pee really bad, but I'm sure the starving Ethiopians feel worse than I did." "I had to wait half-an-hour while my bladder was about to explode, but at least I didn't have to wait in line 5 days while dying in agony of Ebola."
And, my very dear Coward, have you never, NEVER complained about something? And when you have to go potty, are your first thoughts about the kajillion people who have things worse than you? Either you are a saint of a disgusting caliber, or else you a hypocrite of an equally disgusting caliber.
I have a great respect for all the doctors and nurses in that hospital. I feel for all the people who do not have the resources and priveleges I have. Yet, at the same time, I reserve the right to use my Devin-given privelege to rant about the little things that make life temporarily sucky, and I will not feel stupid, or insensitive, or shallow about that, because that's what this place is for.

Also, with the defeatist view of the world that he believes, its a wonder he even is able to get up in the morning without being overcome with the tragedy of the world's problems... |

Re: US Hospitals are Barbaric ? yeah right. by Schizo on Dec 02, 2001 - 07:23 PM (User info | Send a Message) | I just had a cool idea - wouldn't it be funny if someone logged on and took the screen name Anonymous-Coward? That way they could pull this big head game, and make everyone think they were just someone without the guts to tell their real name, when in reality, they were signing in just like everyone else.
I don't know. It's probably stupid, but I thought it might be cool in a twisted sort of way. Most people are always trying to seem better than they are, so it would take someone pretty original and maybe very confident (but then again, maybe very down on themselves) to deliberately make people think they were a coward.
Then again, that person, if discovered, would get blamed for all the stupid posts submitted by all the real Anonymous-Cowards out there, so its not something I would do.
Just thought it was cool to think about.
I think I used the word "cool" too many times in this reply. Oh well. Our dear Coward can then find another reason to insult my intelligence. Bring it on, Coward, bring it on! |

Well that may explain why alot of the nurses I have known on a personal level all seemed to be the Whips 'n Chains types..... LOL Mostly the - Misstress - types at that, Ouch.... I do not jest in the least on that point either. Is it the job that causes a change, or does it just plan attract the Dungeon Mistress types....?? Nurses speak up! (My X was a nurse)

Nurses by Silvernyte (silvernyte@hotmail.com) on Dec 03, 2001 - 05:20 PM (User info | Send a Message) | A good nurse is forceful when need be, but very gentle when not. It comes from the heart, so I would say that the person is that way to begin with. Not that the job makes them that way. Yes, it does seem to draw the dominant types, at least they get further than the others in a career. It will definately help a dom to expand his/her feelings for her/his sub (s) and how to treat them without maiming them for life. It can also go the other way and help a sub to understand the doms point of view and why he/she may do some of the things she/he does. Did that help any? :) |

Re: Nurses by NightSide (nightside@vampirefreeks.com) on Dec 12, 2001 - 10:24 AM (User info | Send a Message) http://hcgothic.iwarp.com/ | Well when it comes to the psych crap.... Been there done that got the t-shirt.... Minored in abnormal psych and know all the text book answers and theory. Right. I agree so far as that goes but I am really interested in the Nurses views on the instutitions that they are working for and if they feel that the grind there, the constant exposure to people in pain and suffering, changes there outlook on life.... As for the dom/sub thing you don't hang with the people I have for the last 30 plus years without getting to know the psych of SM/BD etc.. Anyway what I truly would be interested in is hearing from those that are Nurses. I was thinking about the medical profession at one time in my life and worked driving ambuli for a spell but I am to empathic for the job started to have a bad effect on my thoughts so I went on to other things....

You think civilian hospitals are bad, you should try a navy one...I'm not a nice guy when I'm working, well...mostly, I'm still a softy...but the crap we do to people we don't like. I can sympathize with your rant. I'm a Hospital Corpsman by trade, and I've had fun at others expense several times when at work...no excuse for it, I just like to watch 'em suffer sometimes...in another light though, playing with broke marines with attitudes is one thing, tormenting a mother-to-be is another entirely...I have ethics, not many...but they're there...
Hospitals are barbaric...in general, because people are barbarians...
