I Happen to be considered goth by many of my peers and I have started to get into the dramatic way of living. But one fine day someone comes up to me and remarks quote "He is so not goth cause look at what music he likes. I mean come on, hardly any of the songs are about death" unquote. *and yes I did ask this person wether or not I could quote them on that*
At the time of was listening to Alien Ant Farm and my music book was open showing Rage Against the Machine and Papa Roach. So my question is do you have to go all they way and listen to certain music or just have the attitude, the clothes, ect ect. Oh and I pinned a note on his back which said "I worship the devil" which wouldn't be good in the bible belt. He was not a fellow goth needless to say. Just please if you want and you got time post comments ok

Listen to whatever the hell you want to listen. Dress however the hell you like. If you only want to be CALLED goth, then sure, conform to the popular conceptions. But if you really ARE goth, you won't give a damn.

Dude... I play Earthworm Jim, I have Sailor Moon videos, I listen to Janis Joplin and Peter, Paul&Mary, and I walk around on my days off wearing an oversized Winnie the Pooh shirt and sneakers. I STILL get called a goth. I never understood that, and I think it just might go to show that you know what? Your CD player and its contents don't make you a goth.. your religious beliefs don't make you a goth... your clothes don't make you a goth... and half the time, your attitude doesn't make you a goth. I think goth is a weird natural hormone type chemical thingie that your skin exudes that other people can sense even if you're screaming and ohmigawding along at a Britney Spears concert. And, well, some people wouldn't know if Bela Lugosi walked up and bit them on the ass. Those kind of people think that nothing short of a frilly, melodramatic geek who spouts Type O Negative and Godsmack lyrics all the time is gothic.
Go figure.

Re: Is Music now also contaminated? by Silvernyte (silvernyte@hotmail.com) on Oct 10, 2001 - 03:30 PM (User info | Send a Message) | THANK YOU!! I totally agree with you. I haven't heard it put better in a long time. People say that my house should look pretty weird. All I can tell them is "it looks more or less like everyone elses". I'm not from another planet, I am just different than they are. I consider it to be a type of genetics. For some of us as you say it really doesn't make any difference how you look, you just are. I have always been an outsider no matter how I looked or tried to act. My daughter is the same way and I was trying to be normal through her impressive years. So much for trying to not influence her. If anybody knows of a rule book out there on being goth, let me know. I want to see how many of the rules I am breaking. |

Hell, the people who think I'm wrong would buy it so that they could have something to wave around and say blasphemy. Isn't that how Howard Stern's stuff works?

Re: Is Music now also contaminated? by Silvernyte (silvernyte@hotmail.com) on Oct 11, 2001 - 02:25 PM (User info | Send a Message) | LOL. Go for it! I'd be curious to see how many wanna be goths would buy it to see if they are following the rules to fit in. I've been running into a lot of those here lately, so that is my pet bitch. I actually had one chica ask me if she looked goth enough. We won't go into the conversation I had with her, but I'm curious to see what she does next.
I've been getting in trouble here lately with people because of my views so I may be getting lynched right next to you here pretty soon. Someday I may learn to keep my mouth shut and not say anything, but I doubt it. |

Rage Against The Machine is goth as f*ck because they actually think, unlike your devil-worshipping stereotype-flinging lemming voluntary village idiot.

There are two types of goth's out there, those that don't have to say that they are, everybody just knows that this person is goth, and then there are the people that have to tell you that they are goth, while everybody else just laughs.

I think a lot of it comes from the fact that music STARTED the goth movement (I don't want to get into a "what is goth/where did goth originate" discussion).
The aforesaid guy is a jerk. He's stupid, and he deserves the stereotypes he brings on himself.
I listen to fucking DEAD OR ALIVE folks, okay? How retard 80's is that? Everything from 70's glamrock, old punk, guns and roses, new wave, dreamcore, pop, peter murphy, weepy kill yourself goth like rozz and such, the cure...diamanda galas and pj harvey, concrete blonde...I could go on forever.
Listen to what touches you, what makes you feel alive, whatever you connect to.
Granted, I hate rage and papa roach, but that's just me, and it doesn't make you less of a person.
F'em, that's what I say.

You seem to me like you've got say...
THE GO-GO'S?! ABBA!? *turns the spotlight*
YOU DO, DON'T YOU?! *evil laughter*
And hey, "you spin me round" is a TOKEN opening karaoke song for me...try pulling THAT one off in a hick bar. Really get's 'em riled...
Flock of seagulls too....*cringe*

I would like to say that my true question is answered. Yes i would like to know if there was any guidines to gothness. But after I have seen all shmeng thrown at me I see my true questions answer. My true question was too see how many of you would be your basic I hate you goth and how many actually had a brain and typed something worth reading. As I tought many of you had some good things to say, others just wanted to slap some crap down. I thank all of you for your input. It still would be nice to see some input on my other question.

Re: Is Music now also contaminated? by Schizo on Oct 12, 2001 - 07:28 PM (User info | Send a Message) | What shmeng? I don't see any hate in any of these responses. Except hate for the concept that you have to follow a list of music-listening rules to qualify as goth. But no one cares if you hate a concept. Concepts don't have feelings.
As for guidelines to gothness, I would say that we've made it pretty clear, here and elsewhere, that there are none. No emotional guidelines, (you don't have to be angry or depressed), fashion guidelines (you don't have to wear black, PVC, or anything from HotTopics), activity guidelines (no rules say you have to spend all your time in a graveyard, only come out at night, and write 13 suicide poems a day), and certainly no music guidelines.
If that doesn't answer your "other question" I don't know what will. |

Re: Is Music now also contaminated? by Silvernyte (silvernyte@hotmail.com) on Oct 15, 2001 - 03:48 AM (User info | Send a Message) | As far as I am concerned you don't have to dress any particular way or listen to any particular music to be who you are. If you are goth it will show in your attitude eventually, no matter how you look. It just happens that most goths as I have seen prefer to wear black as it is a more comfortable color. We don't fit into societies little slot any way. Being goth is like any other culture, there is no set standard of how you have to look or anything else, we are just on the darker side. If you listen to a lot of other music it still says a lot of the same things that the goth music does, it is just stated differently. Be true and honest to yourself. |

I thought the comments here were fair and you question was answered. I didn't read EVERY post, but I didn't see any "stupid music listening boy" crap, so what's the matter?
What was your other Q? I only saw one, "is music contaminated"?
YES! Just like everything else! Suffer through it, we all do in all genres!
Who was being crappy? Haven't you ever heard the phrase "go blow, bitch"?
Always works for me.....

Hell yeah music is also contamnated. It is the curse of greater numbers of people who were goth at heart to begin with actually adopting the name to have a sense of belonging (which is a basic human need) that othes have latched on. and now we see the corporate mainstream capitalising on us just as they have on the metal culture with NuMetal. There are three options, as I see it. 1 become so extreme that no-one wants to be like you. 2 learn to filter the shit from the flowers and try not to care too much. 3 stop being true to yourself and reject goth. If there is another way, let me know.
For myself, I'm goth because I am. My goth friends are my family, and to be truthful, i'm just sick of being forced to care and to justify myself evertime someone can't get past the clothing. (incidentally, to wear other than what I normally do makes me feel like a try-hard normal)
this rant is over.
