Lemmings on Parade: Picture the city |
Posted by
feralucce on Thursday, September 06, 2001 - 10:04 AM PST
Picture downtown Columbia, Missouri… The town has a population of two hundred thousand, if you count the college students. Home of the Mizzou tigers. On one side of the main street, Broadway, is a Subway and a bar named East Side Tavern. Directly across the street is a different sandwich shop and East Side Live (another bar owned by the same guy…)
Columbia is an interesting town. Two hundred thousand people, and the town is still like many of the small hick towns in the world. Everyone that hangs out downtown knows everyone else, or – at the least – knows of them.
There is a tattoo artist… For the purposes of this story, his name is Jake. Jake is renowned for being a great guy, but mentally unstable. Everyone has heard the stories of Jake kicking the shit out of some guy at a bar because he said the wrong thing. He's been in and out of prison for assault.
Now enter dumb-ass white rapper, Collins. Collins, being someone who hangs out down town, has heard of, and probably seen at least one of Jake's… Situations. Collins, on his new CD, blasts the tattoo shop that Jake works at, and specifically Jake himself. Some of the lines insinuate that Jake "sucks dick for a ten dollar rock."
Now, before I continue with my story… It has been stated, in the open forums, and in private e-mails that some of us feel that humans do not have any instincts left. What happens next… Is almost enough to make me agree with this diagnosis, as it is painfully obvious that Collins has not sense of survival instinct AT ALL.
Ant'ny, Cy, James, Jake and I are all together outside of the East Side Tavern… and this guy walks up and starts talking to Jake… He says "I know who you are… you're Jake!"
The next thing I hear is this white trash rap star wannabe asking Jake if he "has a fucking problem with me?" And next thing I know… he is laying on the ground, holding his head defensively with Jake kicking the ever living shit out of him…
The point of this story is not to discuss Jake's actions. I want to discuss Collin… What kind of person does it take to something of this sort? I mean, I understand that humans are not the brightest critters, but even sheep are dumb enough to run away from something dangerous. Jake's beatings are famous down town – AND – this guy recognized him on the street. Something has got to be wrong with this boy? I concede a point made at an earlier time.
SOME PEOPLE DO NOT HAVE INSTINCTS… And I would like to make a motion to the assembly that these… are… Prey…

This guy IS a total candidate for the darwin awards.
What makes a guy do something like this?
Well, he's one of a few things:
retarded
attempting to bolster a fallen ego
living in a dream world as a g-funk superman
retarded
I'm going for answer a or c.

Re: Picture the city by bettie_x (strangersangel@hotmail.com) on Sep 07, 2001 - 12:38 PM (User info | Send a Message) http://bettie_x.tripod.com/strangeasangels/ | instincts no. Darwinism, yes. Plants don't have instincts, but they fall to darwinism.
People don't either, but we wouldn't be here as we are now if not for the process defined as "darwinism". Survival of the fittest, the fastest, the strongest. A flock of birds following an time old instinctual pattern can migrate to a calamaty, while another slightly different flock of similar birds (similar enough to breed and produce viable young, but still different) may follow a different instinctual migratory path and make it to their destination in tact.
White moths and brown moths of the same species in a forrest. White moths are easy prey while the brown moths flourish. Forrest fire, now it's a grassland. The brown moths now become targets while the white ones increase in numbers.
A well known local brickhead is "successful" as a music singer, but regularly picks fights with someone who could pop his head like a zit. He will probably get killed or his head squished and be a vegetable, thus incapable of breeding (thank god), thus darwinism, cutting off this fool's access to the gene pool.
The entire natural world succumbs to darwinism, though not everything has the biologically ingrained untaught elaborate survival habits that are known instincts.
Darwinism is big on weeding out the riffraff....lets just be thankfull these fools don't have instincts to help them along. |

Re: Picture the city by feralucce on Sep 07, 2001 - 01:28 PM (User info | Send a Message) http://feralucce.vibechild.com | Ok... I was actually trying to be nice... BUT... I see that is not possible... Humans, have a natural fear of snakes... THAT... is an instinct. People who are too stupid to know that it is not wise to create life, replicate profusely... FUCKING TO CREATE CHILDREN IS AN INSTINCT...
As a race... we are afraid of the dark... some of overcome it... and some are smart enough to realize that the dark is fun... BUT EVEN THOSE... can get frightened by shadow. THAT IS AN INSTINCT...
DARWIN stated that physical traits were not the only necessary things for survival of the fittest and that our behaviors that are ingrained are survival instincts that allowed us as a species to prosper....
NOW... Primates, on the whole... demonstrate a similar set of behaivioral characteristics, and as such, we define that as instinct. NEOLITHIC SOCIETIES (HUMANS) demonstrate 98% of the notable primate behaviors... just because, as a whole, we TRAIN OUR INSTINCTS AWAY... does not mean that we do not have them...
those are examples... Some people are smarter than their instincts... they temper those instincts with intellect, but DO NOT ignore them...and some... are too stupid to listen to them... but they exist... those that ignore them, are not worth the genetic material they are printed on...
NOW... I tried to leave this shit alone, but you won't let it die... I AM DONE WITH THIS... believe what you want... |

Re: Picture the city by bettie_x (strangersangel@hotmail.com) on Sep 07, 2001 - 11:44 PM (User info | Send a Message) http://bettie_x.tripod.com/strangeasangels/ | Jezus christ you are high strung! Jezus freakin' christ! I too gave examples of my opinion on freakin darwinism, as I THOUGHT this (as YOU brought up) was about! Never MIND the fact that I simply responded to a post with examples of WHY I go with Darwinism, after you left a post about being "suprised" by my joking response about the darwin awards (which, hypocrite, was damned snotty itself..."a refreshing change" is only when someone agrees with you then?)
I won't let it die? WTF?! How did I bring it up?! You are the one flying off the handle left and right with your goddamned tender little feelins being "attacked" over NOTHING! I DID NOTHING! If I was not going to let something "die" or if I was going to verbally "attack" you, I WOULD! I wouldn't play some little retarded tap dance, I'd come out and DO IT.
I will believe what I want regardless of you, or anyone, and I don't have to prove it to anyone, let alone Y O U. I'm comfortable with my beliefs, thus don't feel attacked when someone's are different. Are you comfortable?
Trying to be nice?! Try a little goddamned harder and get your panties out of a goddamned wad, will you? Jezus christ, and you call ME sanctimonious. Quit beating your own dead horse. |

Re: Picture the city by feralucce on Sep 08, 2001 - 06:31 AM (User info | Send a Message) http://feralucce.vibechild.com | *spoken quietly and calmly...* you brought up by the very nature of your post... it started with "Instincts no."
Bettie... it is not that you disagree with my beliefs... it was that when you did it the first couple times - and several people have agreed with this - you did it in a way that was insulting and demeaning... I respect those that have strong beliefs, as that is the only way to set a coudrse that will last in this life. But several tiems, you have made outright insulting comments when stating your beliefs. Those comments and insults have forever tainted any discussion we can have... that is the nature of people.
Now... the response to your first post on this one... was not intended as "snotty" I was being completely honest and trying to acknowledge the fact that a)I was surprised... and b) it was a pleasant surprise. I willl remember in the future to do neither of these things.
My reactionary stance to your posts comes from an observation that you tend to blast certain people here... and they tend to fall into a certain category. I feel that my hostility is warrented... I won't take the insults from my family, let alone someon I have never met.
But as I have said, I am done with this. I would be interested in seeing your counters to the instinctual evidence I have supplied however, for you may, yet, end up changing my world view...

Re: Picture the city by bettie_x (strangersangel@hotmail.com) on Sep 08, 2001 - 08:24 PM (User info | Send a Message) http://bettie_x.tripod.com/strangeasangels/ | I tend to blast certain people here? B.S. I treat everyone the same, period. You and who. Give me when and on what. If they had a problem with me they should have had the balls to email me with something as simple as "you're being a bitch, quit it." Did I get one? nope. C'mon, I'm waiting.
And what category would that be?
You didn't mean your post to be "snotty"? You were genuine? Well, I guess we've traded shoes, now haven't we? In your own words, "read your stuff before you post it". You do? Well so do I. I could care less whether someone agrees or disagrees with my opinions. That's what they are! Everyone has them! I'm far from the type to get my panties in a wad over goddamned evolution. I'd just tell them to shut up and turn on the discovery channel. If I'm wrong in facts, I would expect the courtesy of someone setting my ass straight so I don't make an idiot of myself thinking I know what I"m talking about. If someone else has the facts screwey by their own fault or not, I do them that courtesy.
How many good lines on any message board are ruined by two jackasses going at it with "yes you did-no I didn't"? When my computer switches off, all the crap on it does too. It disappears. I had all but FORGOTTEN about that ridiculous little stint that you wanted to "let die", but spun off the friggin handle on a totally different and long DEAD tangent, as if you couldn't tell from my benign first post on a totally different subject. Your hostility isn't warranted, not to that extent. Wigging out is never warranted. Not on mine, not on yours. This is RETARDED.
and if your posse has a problem with me, I'm far from anonymous. As much as I'd hate to break up your bitch about bettie parties, they can come to me. I'm far more civil when I'm not having random tantrums flung out of nowhere.

Re: Picture the city by Schizo on Sep 08, 2001 - 04:41 AM (User info | Send a Message) | God Almighty, Feral! What the fuck?
So you had a disagreement with BettyX before. Personally, I agree with her point in the earlier discussion, although I probably wouldn't have put it in quite the same way. It WAS silly of you to fly off the handle cuz someone was looking at your tattoos. And silly to assume that because someone wasn't DRESSED goth, that they were ignorant and not worthy of basic respect. People's eyes are naturally drawn to the unusual. If you choose to accentuate your unusualness, people will look at you. It's part of the game.
But for crying out loud, Feral, just because Betty had a problem with you there doesn't mean that she's out to attack you! So she doesn't believe in instinct. So what. She has a right to her opinion. And a right to post it on this website.
You seem to be a very touchy person. Lighten up! Betty wasn't anywhere near starting anything this time. But you're acting like she's the devil incarnate and you're holding up your holy cross against her. Please! Maybe she came on a little strong before, but that issue was finished long ago, until you brought it up again by INITIATING an attack, and justifying it by calling it some sort of self-defense!
I like your art, I like some of your comments, but I don't like your attitude. |

Re: Picture the city by feralucce on Sep 08, 2001 - 06:37 AM (User info | Send a Message) http://feralucce.vibechild.com | *spoken softly*Schizo, to you and everyone else... I apologize for my lack of decorum. Please read my latest response to Bettie... I beleive that will explain a lot...
I will also apollogize to everyone for the aggressiveness of yesterdays post... My company held lay offs yesterday... and my emotional state was that of the hunted... as I am now unemployed...
BUT... I will also point out, that as percieved by several other members, and guests... it DID appear that she was starting this again... and I was being defensive.
Take it for what it is worth.

Re: Picture the city by Schizo on Sep 08, 2001 - 10:37 AM (User info | Send a Message) | Sorry to snap so at you, Feral. It's just that people who are easily offended and hold onto offense rub me the wrong way. And it appeared to me you were acting that way.
I'm sorry about your job. Just went through that myself a little while ago, so I know what it's like. Hope you can find something else quickly.
I know Bettie can be abrasive. Sometimes she does go overboard. But this time, and I read the posts carefully, she seemed to be expressing simple difference of opinion on the subject of human instincts. She has a right to a different view than you, and a right to speak of that view on this site. And I can see how she felt your first response to her comment was snotty. It seemed to express surprize that she could be civil, which naturally irritated her.
There is a danger in the written word, in that the inflections of ones voice cannot be heard. (Unless you do what you've done in the last couple of posts and describe inflection ahead of time.) Perhaps the tone in your head as you wrote that post was completely different, but the tone it tends to bring to mind when read is one of caustic sarcasm.
I think you and Bettie are both a little too much on the hotheaded side. Maybe it would help if you both stopped, took a deep breath, and reminded yourselves that the other is not the enemy. Perhaps you could deliberately see if you can put a good tone to a post from the other before you assume that a bad tone is intended.
I don't want to sound like a kindergarten teacher. I'm not trying to be "holier than thou". If you two really want to fight, it's up to you. I'll stay out of it.
Anyway, good luck with your job hunt, and keep up the great work with your art. I'm starting to sound like a goody-two-shoes to myself, so I'll leave before I completely nauseate myself and have to make a mad dash for the bathroom! |

Re: Picture the city by Schizo on Sep 10, 2001 - 06:10 AM (User info | Send a Message) | Well, YOU certainly don't seem to be able to! *grins*
Anyway, who wants to be nice to everyone! I tried that! Everyone loved me. It ended up entirely too suffocating! So now I break loose now and then, though I'll never be quite so intrepid as the fire-breathing bettie! If your vitriolic posts do nothing else, at least they provide a never-ending source of wonder and amazement to me, tinged with a mixture of amusement and admiration. I see your comments, and I think to myself "there she goes again!" and stand back in awe at the big, beautiful brawl that ensues.
You're a little crazy, but at least you're interesting! I'd rather be interesting than completely sane any day! |

Anyway, I think the only one I've really gone off on is comedian for being a jerk to you, and a jerk to me in the vegan bit...then this, but hey...who's counting.
I guess SOMEBODY'S got to get the blood going around here once and a while, but jeezus, such sensitivity! There are a lot of really hypersensitive people, which isn't a bad thing, but it makes disagreeing with anyone a hell of a lot more bloodier and brainless...
anyway doll, as before...

Well that IS the only hope we have left of evolution now we have removed most of the natural forms of 'weak die strong survive' with medical heroics and societys desire to protect those to fucking stupid to live from themselves... If the unfit are not removed then evolution stops. Bloody but TRUE. Add that to the lemming effect from over population..... Yes Prey is a good word and a useful concept on several levels.....

When did this happen Feral? I don't remember hearing anything about that in this entire past year.
However, i do believe humans have instincts, instincts of violence. Perhaps like the dodo bird, we feel that we have no natural predators, which could be considered incorrect as we see that we ourselves are our own prey and predators.
