Drowning in the Well of Urd(Score: 1) by Monolycus on Mar 27, 2003 - 02:42 PM | This "war" was always meant to isolate us. I obtained a hard copy of "Rebuilding America's Defenses: Strategy, Forces and Resources For a New Century" (the report from the Project for the New American Century... see BettieX for obtaining an internet link to the Reader's Digest version... I've gone through the 76 page version and it says the same things) through interlibrary loan from the National Defense University. It says precisely what the internet "conspiracy" stories about it says that it does... it is a manifesto for establishing empirical dominance over the rest of the world and its signatories include members of our most highly placed leadership, including our Vice President, Secretary of Defense, Deputy Secretary of Defense and the President's own brother. This is very literally an all-or-nothing campaign that has been launched and the stakes involve the population of the planet. It is hard to imagine how much more of a smoking gun one could possibly find that we were never interested in a peaceful resolution to the Iraq situation (and that we intend to pursue more aggressive tactics in other theatres such as North Korea in the very near future), but unfortunately, no amount of evidence will sway those amongst us who are unable and unwilling to view the world without applying the black and white cowboy hats that gave them so much comfort and purpose in the halcyon days of their youth.
We are the good guys. Just turn on the television and you will find some talk show host or washed up comedian willing to remind you of that fact. Of course, you will need to ignore the man behind the curtain... he works for the Pentagon and he wants to insure that nobody says anything that might cause us any discomfort on American soil or give aid and comfort to the enemy (go through the editorial archives of the New York Times for this past week... Lucian K. Truscott VI wrote a piece earlier this week about how the Pentagon has coopted the media immediately before our Iraqi operation... suspiciously reversing themselves about the media blackout they had been calling for up until then). Even those elected officials who represent us in Congress have been reminded by those running the show that good Americans bury their heads in the sand and don't ask questions about our motives.

We only want what is best for the rest of the world... and nobody else in the world is in a position to know what is best for them. Just look at the way we've handled our own economic problems. Tune out the fact that even the Russians (!) are calling what we are doing a "humanitarian catastrophe" and trying to petition Kofi Annan not to let that Food-For-Oil escrow account (Food-For-Oil kind of says it all by itself) be controlled by America (which, apparently, was always part of the agenda after all). What does a stinking Russky know anyway? So what if we pilfered our own Social Security repositories to the point of near bankruptcy during an age of so-called "unprecedented prosperity". I am sure that we can be trusted with other people's money during the worst economic crisis we have seen in fifty years.

We are the good guys here. I mean, haven't you seen those pictures of Iraqi's cheering and embracing our boys with the guns on our Pentagon-controlled news broadcasts? Forget about the fact that the Somalis were also shown embracing US troops in 1992 during our "humanitarian efforts" to oust Mohammed Farah Aidid. Of course, even as hated a dictator as Aidid was, those same Somalis decided that he was better than us after a few short weeks of our occupation and chased us out again. But... they hugged us once and cheered us, damn it! We have pictures!
And we are the good guys. We are overthrowing a dictator who doesn't play by the rules here. He defied the UN, remember? That was why we went to the UN and told them we would defy them if they didn't go along with us to get this guy! He's a dictator who didn't have the sense to change the rules when he wanted to do something illegal like we do. We also want to hold people without trials or charges and subject them to media blackouts as well so that the gods alone know what we are doing to them, but we have the common decency to invent new turns-of phrases to cover our butts!

So we have to violate a few rights and break a couple of international laws. We are Americans and should be allowed to do whatever we want! If you disagree, just remember that you are in no place to criticise anyone since you don't have all the information. You can be trusted to know enough to cast a vote, but not voice an objection. That's democracy! Just like the democracy that we are going to be forcing down the throats of the rest of the world. Now go grab your flag and be a good American and stop asking uncomfortable questions. All you need to remember is that we are the good guys.
