See, I think she would have gotten into more trouble in the first person. Her "child" is already not acting within the limits of the age she is eventually tied, too. I think the in the first person it would have become an even bigger let down, if after all the teenage prattle, the child turned out to be so young.
I don't know my personal opinion on it is doing things in first person is frequently easier. You try to project yourself, and hope that others are getting you, and if they don't you can always cry how they don't understand you, and should have been able to figure it out. I'm not sure that in this instance being in a first person voice would have made it any more interesting, intense, or readable.
