I agree that joking about such a situation is out of line. But not all people who make jokes about that sort of thing are callous, disgusting people. Sometimes they are the people who are the most sensitive to the pain of what happened, and the joke is an attempt to relieve the pressure inside them. I know that when I was a teenager, my dog, who I loved with all my heart got hit by a car and killed. I cried and cried, and I couldn't stand much more. Suddenly I found myself sitting next to my cousin Seth (who was the previous owner of the dog) making sick jokes about it. I was shocked at myself, yet it helped me to release that unbearable tension of pain. If I could laugh, then I could keep living.
Of course, there are also sicko's who just laugh and make fun of tragedy because they don't give a damn. And they ARE jackasses.
