The problem is, is that unless some one actually comes forward, or we have definitave proof, we cannot send in troops, even though a lot of signs point to ben laden, if we invade Afganistan to retrieve him(which we would have to do) the other middle eastern nations would not like it, and would probably help afganistan.
Also I liked President Bush's speech. He did mention the loss of life, he also mentioned everything else that needed to be said. It would not do good to have the president break down in tears on national TV. He has to remain strong, take a step back and do what needs to be done. Remember, his family was threatened, and Camp David, which is his summer home, was believed to be the fourth target. The attacks were close to him too.

I agree to some extent....your canadian friend was pretty much wrong....though different wording may have brought a different response.
We weren't asking for it...We didn't have it coming. BUT we have to EXPECT those sort of actions as a world superpower. It's nice to be king of the hill until someone tries to knock you off. We were grossly unprepared...disgustingly unprepared. People compare it to pearl harbor. This isn't pearl harbor, this is worse. This is an act of war on AMERICAN SOIL. The CONTINENT. US!!
The business men/women, officworkers, janitors, moms, dads, sisters, brothers, sons, daughters, husbands, wives, girlfriends, boyfriends, lovers....they had nothing to do with war. They had nothing to do with the crisies in other countries. They had nothing to do with our government, our foreign policies, our bullshit. This wasn't so much an attack on american, but on AMERICANS. That is what makes me the most angry. And it didn't have to happen. It never should have happened. It was senseless, and to some extent we have nobody to blame but ourselves. In our freedom and quest for greater freedoms, we have left open our bellies for a strike. Who knew something as convenient as curb side check in could be a possible opening for something so deadly? We think "how convenient" and now "I wonder who else takes advantage of this convenience" while they boarded that last fatal trip, some locking themselves in bathrooms to call their loved ones as the plane went down...watching terrorists using boxknives, systematically slitting the throats of passengers, murdering crew members to lure pilots out of their cabin to their own death. It won't happen in america. It will, it could, and it did.
We were taken advantage of in the worst way.
The deathtoll is low, but the survivor count is lower. The deathtoll is low because we haven't yet dug through 220 combined stories of total obliteration. Those who survived the collapse that haven't been rescued yet...the clock is ticking or has already run out.
I too was really dissapointed in the president's speech. It goes beyond the "20 gallons of dumb in a 10 gallon hat" jokes. We'll see in the ensuing weeks just what kind of man he is. I was far more impressed with the NATO response, from foreign leaders. Their outrage and sorrow was clearly conveyed. Their support is evident. I can understand wanting to keep america calm, but I think he angered more citizens than he consoled or calmed.
SOmeone said this was a test. Our president shouldn't have to be tested. Not at all, not like this. But I feel this IS a test...by terrorist groups, by the foreign country that MAY be involved. See what kind of king of the hill we are, and what'll happen if we get pushed.
But all we can do is watch, wait, and see.
